Aloha, Mahalo nui loa for this very informative video. I'm new to Shea Butter & found your vid extremely helpful. Could you please give a few recommendations as to where I can get good quality Shea online from a trusted source? I recently made a homemade deodorant using Shea, Cacao, EVCoco nut, Hempseed Oil, Arrowroot powder, Baking Soda & Lavender Essential Oil, which came out awesome! It's so satiny on the skin, not greasy at all. Thanks you very much! Aloha nui from Hilo!
Hello, I melted my shea butter, added coconut oil to one mixture and jojoba oil to the other.... The one with the coconut oil is a light brown color and the one with the jojoba oil is a dark almost black color. I melted it over a double boiler. Is it still okay to use it? Thanks.
@sharonfosterable She has not been on youtube in a long time so i thought i could answer your question if that is okay. She said in another one of her videos that she gets her shea butter from home. I think this video should help you: I can't get the address on her but it is called Agbanga Karite Shea Butter and Black soap review. Have a blessed day !!!
Ironically, I purchased some off wht Shea Butter this weekend. I was at an event and the vendor were selling both off wht & yellow as well as other items such as Black soap. I do not live in Memphis, but he gave me a business card... Hopefully you can get this shipped to you. Good Luck
Thank you for such an informative video! I am inexperienced in shea butter but I have had many people reccoment this product for my dry skin. I did not buy it just yet b.c. I didn't know which one is grade a shea butter. :) Thank you again!
Everyone should first try going to their local African store ....I did and found everything I was looking for... the salesman was from Nigerian and very informative! I purchased raw African black soap and whipped raw Shea butter (which was lighter in color than the original). Raw Shea butter has no expiration date but black soap does. If you have acne sometimes your skin might start purging when you first start using these products .....so you should give it a week at least ...

Hey your real pretty but i just wanted to ask what is better for the skin and reducing scars shea butter or cocoa butter. i like cocoa butter because i think the smell is nice and rich but i want to know which 1 is more beneficial?? i know this video is old but plz respond..
Hi, I just came across your shea butter videos, very informative. I have two questions, where do you get your own actual shea butter from? And what are some places or websites that you recommend buying natural, raw, unrefined shea butter from?
THANK YOU FOR THIS!!! I was wondering why there were different colors of shea butter. I'm eager to learn about the others and why its the color that they are
I just ordered East African Shea butter (appears off white) for my hair so it is ok to use on acne prone skin? I live in the Bronx where there is a community of Africans and I noticed the women have smooth skin. Is it a staple for a womans beauty regiman? I'm african american.
I know this is odd to say, but I love listening to you. I'm browsing the internet looking for true shea butter but I have to have your video on because your voice is so soothing. Thank you for sharing your valuable information. I just bought some unrefined shea butter and from your info. it is very good shea butter smelling just as you described it. You Rock!
Hi I was wondering if you could recommend me a reputable, legit website where I can order unrefined shea in bulk... You have Awesome videos!!.. Thank you
I just bought some Sawaneh African Shea Butter. To me it smells like coco butter. Do real Shea butter and coco butter have a similar smell? I paid 7 dollars and some change for a medium size container. Does that sound about right to you?
like... not be rasict when i look at african people i think they have such nice skin. is it because they use sheabutter? like i see a lot of beautiful african women with nice skin beatiful and shiny
@queenofsheba1000 I agree, they do have very nice clear skin, the lady I bought my shea butter from locally said it was from shea butter, but I cant put it on my face I will break out
Thanks for the great video. I learned alot. Can you tell me where you get your black soap and shea butter from also the oils that you used in another video. I live in Mississippi and I do not believe they have any African shops here that sell. Please let me know where you get your products from. I can be emailed at Minnieb3@hotmail.com
@nanidiamond.... Yeah, I think neither butter is better than the other. It's just what your body reacts to better. I am from Kenya, on the East Coast of Africa.
I bought some afrikan butter that was sold as "yellow shea butter." he siad is regular shea butter they just add palm oil -n is good for the skin... is that right?thanks
@sunshineua..Yes, if you add palm oil to Shea, it will look yellowish. Nothing wrong with this formula and at least they were decent enough to tell you the truth. If you like it then great, if you don't then at least you know you have other options..
Glad i came across your video. What r the healing properties of afrikan butter?...trying to see which is best... I know it maybe hard to tell...but if i where to know the healing properties of shea n afrikan buttter - i kan figure out for self.would it be better to get shea butter stray from the nut ?there people that sell it out here and they take it stray from the nut n place it in the container -then i buy it :) so, that is not process right -when it comes stray from the nut?
@sunshineu...Both butters have the similar molecular structures. The Shea is superior because it has more deposits of fatty acids. I alternate between the two and I love both equally. It just depends on what your hair or skin reacts to better, that's all. And yes, natural from the but is your best bet!
@Yungbunz4 ......It is fat from a nut. It will have a long shelf life unless you add things to it and destroy the molecular structure. Left in it's natural state, this fat could last forever. But there are factors all around us that influence how long it will last..
Thank you so much for such a wonderful video. I have a suggestion, you can use teleprompter for script, or if you don't have that you can write on a paper (in a big font) and put it on the back side of camera so that it'll give professional touch to this video, furthermore you don't have to keep reading your paper during that video. Thanks again for this very informative video.
@umeshdpatel... Thanks for the advise. I cannot afford a teleprompter so maybe I go with the paper idea. I don't have a lot of space so I might have to get creative with it... I would like to make the videos better so any advise on how to improve this is great...thanks again..
@Mandy4610.. I hear good things about Coastal Scents but you can always google, I am sure there must be a vendor near you given how popular these butters have become..
When you get the chance please check out the BlackNaps fan page on facebook I posted up a picture of the "Shea Butter" nut that I am talking about and I am wondering what in the world is thing now.
This video was very interesting, however I have a question. I went to my local mart and they had a huge nut on display and they scooped out the shea butter from this nut and it was yellow. If this is not shea butter what in the world could it possibly be? I am so shocked.
@Stereo871... It could be African butter (different tree, different nut) or Shea butter that has palm oil in it so will look yellow. This is a very common practice where the African butter is more popular.
Thank you so much for sharing this video!! I learned so much from watching it. I saw a few vendors selling the "yellow" shea butter on ebay.com. Glad I saw this video, now I know of the actual color of it..thanks!:)
@Jerseygrl0809..Yaay..Knowledge truly is power.....You can now try both and see what your body/hair likes better.....But at the very least you know which of the two it is!
@NubianBarbie91 Hi ,I read you comment about finding the shea butter send me your email and I send you my catolog- I'm a vendor that carry all african products.
Hi. Very informative video and your skin is gorgeous! I have what I now know is African "shea" Butter and it has "grains" in it but when you rub it in your hands or even just put it in your palm it begins to melt almost instantly, "grains" and all. It leaves your skin satiny and has that distinct earthy smell. Based on your experience is this unrefined butter or is it mixed with something maybe another oil (hopefully organic) which causes it to be "grainy"? Thanks
@mspersonal2010...Thank hun...And yes, there must have been some other oil added to the Shea, now that does not mean it's bad..but it would be nice to know what the other component was.
@DuchessGabrielle Some manufacturers add palm oil to it. When I add olive oil to my Shea Butter it tends to get greasy, it definitely is not African Butter, otherwise it wouldn't be greasy. I actually had an argument over this with youtuber and business woman TonyaTko who actually believes that Shea Butter is yellow. She sells it in her online store, which is fraudulent.
uughh I just bought 2 pounds of the YELLOW "shea" butter! I wanted the actual shea butter because of all it's benefits, especially it's benefits in removing stretch marks. Now i have 2 pounds of something that I didm't want...
I would still try and use it. A lot of people I know use the yellow "shea" and they still rave about its benefits to their hair/skin. It could work for you; never know, unless you try : )
@bloodlust347 ...Try it! The butters are very similar in their structure. You may find that your hair and body actually react to the African butter better than the Shea and if not..you can always try the Shea later..
Thanks so much for posting this information. I bought some Shea butter today and I wondered about it because it wasn't yellow or white. I was able to compare it to yours and based on what you have said I know I have the real thing. Thanks again.
Hi Gabrielle this is the first time i've come across ur vids and its great. can i ask u where u originally come from??? i come from Ghana and im going for a visit in july 2010 even in Ghana there is a lot of confusion when it comes to shea butter, and i want to get some from there. is it better to go to the people who make it make it in the villages or buy it from the city??? thanks for your clarification on shea butter!!!
wow..so happy I came across this Chanel. this video is extremely informative I cant thank you enough for clarifying this shea butter confusion!! i've never used the yellow one thank goodness i didnt...Keep up the good work it is highly appreciated! Have you found any research done on how exactly shea butter works on the hair..i've been searching but i found very few, they all just state that it is a good moisturizer thats about it..
Hi Gabrielle... again thank you for helping to make us all smarter consumers. In your video you stated that your shea butter from home comes in a bag and you melt it into a liquid using indirect heat. Do you melt it into a complete liquid and pour it into your desired container or did you melt it enough to soften it and press it into you container? Also is your shea butter raw or unrefined? Is there a difference between the two? Thanks
@doucwhaic ...Yes...I melt it all to liquid..only because working with it as a liquid is much easier and less messy. Also, I want to make sure that I alter the temperature evenly and not on some parts of the butter. There is no such thing a raw Shea butter...The fat is just extracted from the nut and kept natural or refined. So Shea can only be refined or unrefined..but it cannot be raw! Hope that helps...
@DuchessGabrielle actually there is such thing as RAW SHEA BUTTER. I have some in my bathroom, so if u dont believe me. Ill make a video of it and send it to you!
Hi Gabrielle... again thank you for helping to make us all smarter consumers. Do you melt it into a complete liquid and pour it into your desired container or did you melt it enough to soften it and press it into you container? Also is your shea butter raw or unrefined? Like I know the difference...lol Thanks
@melanin12345....You are welcome dear...Unfortunately my source is family back in Africa so I cannot make any vendor recommendations. There's a link on the side bar for the Shea Institute. They certify the quality of Shea Butter and can make reliable and honest vendor recommendations. I hope that helps....
Hi, very informative video. I live in the West Indies and bought shea butter which came from Ghana. It's off white and has tiny grains in it. Doesn't smell too nice but within a few minutes it absorbs into my skin.
Does off white shea butter have little grains in it?
@jdimples66 ...Shea butter is smooth with no grains...I'm not sure why yours has them...What color is it? Sometimes vendors alter the butters for one reason or another...you should call and ask questions then you'll know.
@jdimples66 I am not sure where you brought your shea butter from, but please be aware that sometimes Shea Butter can melt while in transit. It is a highly susceptible to temperature shift. When shea butter melts, it often re-solidifies and forms grains. One way to cure that is to re-melt your butter and let it sit at room temperature to resolidify. Make sure to stir your butter from time to time to rid of the potential grains that may form. Hope this tidbit helps.
the butter i ordered from coastal scents came to me and was off white in color and has the same attributes that you mentioned in your vid. But there was somewhere I saw on Youtube where they say it varies from a yellowish color to like a white color depending on the shea nut itself. and there's a brand in the stores here in TX called R&M unrefined african shea butter that's yellow in color....but now im guessing that's not REALLY shea butter....now im confused!... :)
@MrsWest1...No Shea butter is yellow...It could have some mint green or light yellow undertones but they are very subtle....look at it under direct sunlight....the dominant color should be off-white with small undertones...if yellow is more dominant then it is not Shea..It can be tricky..take your time....
@icyni ...Thanks hun and please if you can..do a video and show us what yours looks like..there's people out here who are still confused about the two butters...
@HipHopcheerleader ...Thanks for appreciating the video. I get my butters and soap from family back at home so I cannot recommend any vendors for now. I am looking into it though and as soon as I see a vendor who is trust worthy and I like their product I will definitely share that info..promise!!
....but where do they get theirs? Can you give out that information? Who supplies your family with it, maybe they sale it outside of their own community. I will have you know I am taking a stand and I am not buying anymore SB till I hear back from the Shea Butter Institute. Their website was an eye opener. It makes me so mad that people are watering down SB, and seling it as high as 10 /lb So was your video. Well thanks for the feed back dear :- ))
@HipHopcheerleader...They get it from Togo or Mali which is in central Africa. My brother has to go into the villages to buy it...the women just make it for their families...However, more companies are now going in to have it mass produced..But the highest quality still remains hidden in the numerous villages in Africa...
@GTSouljah187...I have a video on white shea butter which is refined...you will find more info there...Check that out then let me know if you still have questions on the differences...
@GTSouljah187 ..No..Shea butter is not hard at all. It is a fat, that you can easily manipulate and mold with your hands... it also melts readily on your palms just from the body heat. It's winter time so the butter might "freeze" while in transit but as soon as it's in a warm room with room temperature.. it should resume it's normal consistency..I hope that helps.
@GTSouljah187 ..The yellow kind is a different butter from a different nut that grows on a different tree. The yellow butter is African butter. There is no such thing as yellow Shea butter. The African butter is very similar to Shea butter with Shea being a superior. Hope that helps out!
thats odd. everywhere I go they have it in a "block" form. I hear it does melt when put in the microwave or when you rub it in your hands but I have yet to see it already in cream form unless at has been mixed .
@GTSouljah187 ...Yeah it should not be in cream form. It should be a light fat..exactly the way I show it on the above video. If in cream form, it means something has definitely been added to it!
OMG, you mean to tell me that Coastal Scents creamy Shea Butter is mixed with something? They market that butter as creamy. Its pale pale yellow. The only thing is I checked out some vendors that claim they have tested their SB,with the SBI, and it's 86.25 for 5 pounds. OMG ! ! !
@DuchessGabrielle how much better would you say unrefined shea butter is better than non raw she abutter? I have someone that can get me some but its only makes with palm oil to get a creamy texture but other than that is unrefined . How much would you say does that affect the properties of it ? thnx
@GTSouljah187 ..Unrefined Shea butter is raw Shea butter....right from the Shea nuts with no alterations or additions, Adding palm oil will definitely make it creamy..It doesn't mean it's bad..It just means you are not getting 100% unrefined Shea butter. We can't say for sure how much the palm oil interferes with the Shea because it depends on how much of each was used and if the palm oil is refined or in it's natural state. Hope that helps!!
Hi, Gabrielle I want to know where you purchase your shea butter from, I really like the way you explain the difference and also your skin is beautiful. Also I want to know if you have a hair regimen and if so can you please share it.
@Lakeeshia1 ...First of all..thanks for the compliment and for appreciating my the video. Unfortunately, I get my butters and soap from family back at home so I can't really make any vendor recommendations. Please do extreme background check before making any purchases..I have heard some horror stories...
@Lakeeshia1...Almost forgot...I don't have a solid hair regimen because I experiment with a lot of oils based on what I feel my hair needs at any given time. I am relaxed but I make pretty much everything that goes on my hair, body and face. I plan on sharing a few of those concoctions soon as I can...
@Babygirl89jks.... I have a video on white shea butter which is refined...you will find more info there...as for which is better...the natural unrefined shea butter is best...all the natural nourishing properties are intact and hence will be most effective...hope that helps..
This video is very informative..thank you do do do much...
All this time i have been using the yellow butter thinking it was shea butter.. I must say in new york they are a lot of people saying that the yellow butter is shea butter. Now i know.. Knowledge is Power!
@JohnStout2K6 ..I would love to take that compliment but you must have me confused with someone else.. I have never had a Shea butter business or sold it to anyone.
@majoshlin ...Everyone asks me that and it breaks my heart to have to say I get it from family back at home and therefore cannot really recommend any place to purchase but the Shea Institute has endorsed vendors. I hope that helps..a little
Real unrefined organic shea has an earthy, burnt sort of smell. Yes, you do not forget the odor, it can take some getting used to. I've purchased it from a direct vendor for many years.
awesome info, thank u :D, nut what about golden shea butter, has it been dyed also?

Glad i came across your video. What r the healing properties of afrikan butter?...trying to see which is best... I know it maybe hard to tell...but if i where to know the healing properties of shea n afrikan buttter - i kan figure out for self.would it be better to get shea butter stray from the nut ?there people that sell it out here and they take it stray from the nut n place it in the container -then i buy it :) so, that is not process right -when it comes stray from the nut?
sunshineua 1 year ago
@sunshineu...Both butters have the similar molecular structures. The Shea is superior because it has more deposits of fatty acids. I alternate between the two and I love both equally. It just depends on what your hair or skin reacts to better, that's all. And yes, natural from the but is your best bet!
DuchessGabrielle 1 year ago
how do you know when the African butter is expired?
Yungbunz4 1 year ago
@Yungbunz4 ......It is fat from a nut. It will have a long shelf life unless you add things to it and destroy the molecular structure. Left in it's natural state, this fat could last forever. But there are factors all around us that influence how long it will last..

Hi Gabrielle,
Thank you so much for such a wonderful video. I have a suggestion, you can use teleprompter for script, or if you don't have that you can write on a paper (in a big font) and put it on the back side of camera so that it'll give professional touch to this video, furthermore you don't have to keep reading your paper during that video. Thanks again for this very informative video.
umeshdpatel 1 year ago
@umeshdpatel... Thanks for the advise. I cannot afford a teleprompter so maybe I go with the paper idea. I don't have a lot of space so I might have to get creative with it... I would like to make the videos better so any advise on how to improve this is great...thanks again..

hey, thanks for this video. I am in Canada and just wondering what the best online store for shea butter would be. Please help if you can. Thanks.
Mandy4610 1 year ago
@Mandy4610.. I hear good things about Coastal Scents but you can always google, I am sure there must be a vendor near you given how popular these butters have become..
DuchessGabrielle 1 year ago
When you get the chance please check out the BlackNaps fan page on facebook I posted up a picture of the "Shea Butter" nut that I am talking about and I am wondering what in the world is thing now.
Stereo871 1 year ago
@Stereo871. Okay, Will do. You are wondering what the nut is? Like for which butter?
DuchessGabrielle 1 year ago
@DuchessGabrielle For African Butter, what kind of nut is it, and which tree does it come from?
Stereo871 1 year ago
This video was very interesting, however I have a question. I went to my local mart and they had a huge nut on display and they scooped out the shea butter from this nut and it was yellow. If this is not shea butter what in the world could it possibly be? I am so shocked.
Stereo871 1 year ago
@Stereo871... It could be African butter (different tree, different nut) or Shea butter that has palm oil in it so will look yellow. This is a very common practice where the African butter is more popular.
DuchessGabrielle 1 year ago
Thank you so much for sharing this video!! I learned so much from watching it. I saw a few vendors selling the "yellow" shea butter on ebay.com. Glad I saw this video, now I know of the actual color of it..thanks!:)

Thanks
mspersonal2010 1 year ago
@mspersonal2010...Thank hun...And yes, there must have been some other oil added to the Shea, now that does not mean it's bad..but it would be nice to know what the other component was.
DuchessGabrielle 1 year ago
@DuchessGabrielle Some manufacturers add palm oil to it. When I add olive oil to my Shea Butter it tends to get greasy, it definitely is not African Butter, otherwise it wouldn't be greasy. I actually had an argument over this with youtuber and business woman TonyaTko who actually believes that Shea Butter is yellow. She sells it in her online store, which is fraudulent.

I order Real unrefined shea butter from etsy.com/shop/NaturalCos site all the time.
They are the best around, you dont have to worry about getting ripped off or getting fake shea.

uughh I just bought 2 pounds of the YELLOW "shea" butter! I wanted the actual shea butter because of all it's benefits, especially it's benefits in removing stretch marks. Now i have 2 pounds of something that I didm't want...
bloodlust347 1 year ago
@bloodlust347
I would still try and use it. A lot of people I know use the yellow "shea" and they still rave about its benefits to their hair/skin. It could work for you; never know, unless you try : )
Goddess298 1 year ago
@bloodlust347 ...Try it! The butters are very similar in their structure. You may find that your hair and body actually react to the African butter better than the Shea and if not..you can always try the Shea later..

Thanks
doucwhaic 1 year ago
@doucwhaic ...Yes...I melt it all to liquid..only because working with it as a liquid is much easier and less messy. Also, I want to make sure that I alter the temperature evenly and not on some parts of the butter. There is no such thing a raw Shea butter...The fat is just extracted from the nut and kept natural or refined. So Shea can only be refined or unrefined..but it cannot be raw! Hope that helps...
DuchessGabrielle 1 year ago
@DuchessGabrielle actually there is such thing as RAW SHEA BUTTER. I have some in my bathroom, so if u dont believe me. Ill make a video of it and send it to you!

Hi, very informative video. I live in the West Indies and bought shea butter which came from Ghana. It's off white and has tiny grains in it. Doesn't smell too nice but within a few minutes it absorbs into my skin.
Does off white shea butter have little grains in it?
jdimples66 2 years ago
@jdimples66 ...Shea butter is smooth with no grains...I'm not sure why yours has them...What color is it? Sometimes vendors alter the butters for one reason or another...you should call and ask questions then you'll know.
DuchessGabrielle 1 year ago

MrsWest1 2 years ago
@MrsWest1...No Shea butter is yellow...It could have some mint green or light yellow undertones but they are very subtle....look at it under direct sunlight....the dominant color should be off-white with small undertones...if yellow is more dominant then it is not Shea..It can be tricky..take your time....

@HipHopcheerleader ...Thanks for appreciating the video. I get my butters and soap from family back at home so I cannot recommend any vendors for now. I am looking into it though and as soon as I see a vendor who is trust worthy and I like their product I will definitely share that info..promise!!
DuchessGabrielle 2 years ago
....but where do they get theirs? Can you give out that information? Who supplies your family with it, maybe they sale it outside of their own community. I will have you know I am taking a stand and I am not buying anymore SB till I hear back from the Shea Butter Institute. Their website was an eye opener. It makes me so mad that people are watering down SB, and seling it as high as 10 /lb So was your video. Well thanks for the feed back dear :- ))
HipHopcheerleader 2 years ago
@HipHopcheerleader...They get it from Togo or Mali which is in central Africa. My brother has to go into the villages to buy it...the women just make it for their families...However, more companies are now going in to have it mass produced..But the highest quality still remains hidden in the numerous villages in Africa...

GTSouljah187 2 years ago
@GTSouljah187...I have a video on white shea butter which is refined...you will find more info there...Check that out then let me know if you still have questions on the differences...
DuchessGabrielle 2 years ago
so can you tell me if the shea butter thats kinda hard is even similar to the real one? or is that what you get but just melted down? thanks
GTSouljah187 2 years ago
@GTSouljah187 ..No..Shea butter is not hard at all. It is a fat, that you can easily manipulate and mold with your hands... it also melts readily on your palms just from the body heat. It's winter time so the butter might "freeze" while in transit but as soon as it's in a warm room with room temperature.. it should resume it's normal consistency..I hope that helps.
DuchessGabrielle 2 years ago
so should I completely ignore the yellow kind ?
GTSouljah187 2 years ago
@GTSouljah187 ..The yellow kind is a different butter from a different nut that grows on a different tree. The yellow butter is African butter. There is no such thing as yellow Shea butter. The African butter is very similar to Shea butter with Shea being a superior. Hope that helps out!
DuchessGabrielle 2 years ago
thats odd. everywhere I go they have it in a "block" form. I hear it does melt when put in the microwave or when you rub it in your hands but I have yet to see it already in cream form unless at has been mixed .
GTSouljah187 2 years ago
@GTSouljah187 ...Yeah it should not be in cream form. It should be a light fat..exactly the way I show it on the above video. If in cream form, it means something has definitely been added to it!
DuchessGabrielle 2 years ago
@DuchessGabrielle
OMG ! ! !
HipHopcheerleader 2 years ago
@DuchessGabrielle how much better would you say unrefined shea butter is better than non raw she abutter? I have someone that can get me some but its only makes with palm oil to get a creamy texture but other than that is unrefined . How much would you say does that affect the properties of it ? thnx
GTSouljah187 2 years ago
@GTSouljah187 ..Unrefined Shea butter is raw Shea butter....right from the Shea nuts with no alterations or additions, Adding palm oil will definitely make it creamy..It doesn't mean it's bad..It just means you are not getting 100% unrefined Shea butter. We can't say for sure how much the palm oil interferes with the Shea because it depends on how much of each was used and if the palm oil is refined or in it's natural state. Hope that helps!!
DuchessGabrielle 2 years ago
