@mindofajedi...listen idiot, 'josh wanskin world class'? who are u trying to kid? there are over a 1000 GMs in the world, and wankskin isnt one of them. so what exactly is 'world class'? you think anand and topo and carlsen fear the likes of him? dream on. and i see that anyone who doesnt have yr opinions is 'talentless', well for your info i am a member of the england corr. chess team and have so far won all my games. so, wrong on all counts eh. so much for assumptions.
This bastard used the name of Bobby Fischer to his advantage. Actually it could be his dad who's the bastard or both... I don't have the time to analyze how did they use the situation to their advantage....
ppl have only heard of this guy cuz of that corny made for tv movie. if he was russian no one wud ever have heard of him. we all know US chess standards are not all that, so i guess he is just the best u guys have got. wow, the US produced an IM, in a world of over 1000 GMs. why single him out then?? he isnt a special talent at all. all of the top 50 (maybe even top 200) players in the world are stronger. time has proved that point beyond a doubt now.
@ooooooohmy Listen idiot , he is a world class chess player and a world class martial artist . I'm sure you have never been very talented at anything , but don't try to put down people who are smarter than you to build your self esteem .
He was a prodigy, he beat his first master at age 10 with a queen, rook sacrifice, at age 11 he drew against kasparov (it was an exihbition tho, but still) and he was a IM at 16, he actually has beaten many GM's...just becuase he did not get an official title dosent mean he wasnt a prodigy...and he could of gotten the GM title if he would of accepted the draw at the world championships but declined and try to push for the win.
@blackoil911 The world championship under 18 something like that (it was not the World Championship as in challenging Anand or any of those guys), and if you believe and IM is not a great player then you are crazy..BTW he was a "strong" IM, he was over 2500 at one point and stayed there for a while, but he quit before getting all the GM norms.
@blackoil911 Not a great chess player? Yeah, an 11 year old a with draw against Kasparov isn't a great chess player. Who did you beat when you were 11 years old? You will never match his ability, so why should anyone take your premise that he is not a great player seriously?
your moron'''' josh was no way a great chess player let me rephraze for the dumb ass'''' KAsprov karpov alekhine capablanca were all world title holders'''' josh was none of that''' it was his right to decide to join or not 2''' but its my right to come to a conclusion he wasnt great cuz of that'''' and also fischer ran away from karpov shame
@blackoil911 He didn't run away from Karpov you moronic idiot. Learn your history before running your uneducated mouth. Karpov is the one who decided not to play Fischer. Fischer had every stipulation that was fair, but Karpov wouldn't play him.
You do not have to be the best prodigy in the world to be a prodigy at something. Also, he could have been a GM if he wanted that...this is a known fact, period. Anyone that becomes an IM in their teens can easily go on to become a GM if they want to.
Waitzken was like numerous child prodigies before him. They are all hailed as the "next fischer", but rarely doesn that ever happen.
Waitzken was a bust as a player. He peaked at around 2500 Elo, well below the level of play needed to be considered "world class".
Magnus Carlsen is the current golden boy of chess. 18 years old, ranked in the world's top ten as a player and has a good chance of becoming the world champ someday.
Lol I'm not sure what kind of standards you have but reaching 2500 as a chess player can hardly be considered a bust ESPECIALLY as a junior. If you want to say it's a bust as a professional, OK, I hear ya. But to accomplish that as a junior... that's rare.
lmao thinks hes hella badass "There were girls at my chess tournaments asking to sign their stomachs." Wow youre such a baller man, sure youre getting some grade A ass
John Waitzkin hasn't achieved as much as top chess players in the world, because he was concentrating on two things: chess and marcial arts. You have to be totally focused on one thing and isolate yourself from everything else in order to achieve very high level of perfomance.
The cool kid from the movie would never turn out to become this guy.. He's so full of himself, but has he gotten close to the great expectations? The next Bobby Fischer, give me a break.. This guy is an IM and he's getting close to the age of 30... His nemesis from the movie is probably top 5 in the world right now xD
So i assume Waitzkin was still pretty young? I cant imagine Josh being in his late teens or adult and playing a simultaneous match if you know what i mean, and i agree he would lose to kasparov head to head, thats why i was shocked when i read what you said
If Bobby didn't make an apperance on this movie then why put his name on the title? I guess they did that to get more grab more attention, since Bobby Fischer was a chess legend.

Actually no. The movie is called "Searching for Bobby Fischer" because it was based on his father Fred Waitzkin's book "Searching for Bobby Fischer". Kinda like the "lord of the rings" films are based on the books "lord of the rings". They didn't call it "Frodo's journeys" cus it wouldn't make much sense to base a movie off a book and then change the title to something different. That'd be a slap in the face to the author.

It is a weird statement. I think he meant that he became self-aware while he was playing.
