Believe it or not, it can helps with the musicality of the piece. Watch Richter play the piano and you'll see him move a lot. Horowitz never moved. They were both fantastic.
However, there are those like Lang Lang who take it too far.
I think that sometimes movement interferes with and compromises interpretation. She is a sensitive musician but I believe that channeling some of that body movement into her mind and into her fingers would pique the subtle dynamics, energy, and emotional intensity of the piece.
how beautifull is that piece? you played it exquisitely and was exquisite to whatch you playing it. Ive just been playing Vocalise on my new Steinway D and am floating away after playing it oh a least 10 times tonight in succession. Love it for ever and ever x
I feel like the people who criticize how much someone moves while they are playing are the ones who are so stiff that their performances are lifeless...
It is only recently that the issue of movement in performance has been brought to our wider attention. It was less of a problem before the 21st century, however audiences demand something that not is not just auditaurally pleasing, but also visually pleasing. It seems to be expected in the 21st century school. But take heifetz or rubinstein as an example of your so called 'stiff' + 'lifeless' performances; where you may close your eyes and feel the heavens opening before you, the earth beneath.
Good performers play in a way that is enjoyable to watch, I think, though obviously technical issues and musicality come first. (And of course if you move too much to play properly it might be a problem...) I really meant that I would personally rather watch someone who has some physical expressiveness in their playing that can supplement the emotions they are trying to convey. It isn't that a player has to be moving like crazy -- Rubinstein moves subtly, but he still gets "into" it.
Why does it matter if a person is moving or not while playing music?? Enjoy the music and a nice interpretation of this piece, rather than looking for something to criticize.
moving while playing any instrument is personal. for this performer, it enhances her performance greatly. i've had the pleasure of hosting her twice and it adds to her recital.
I'd say movement is pretty important, if there was no movement she wouldn't even be able to move her fingers. then thered be no point in this comment or that one or thei whole video...
I like when pianists move, because It makes the music more soft and not tense.
Of course I don't like when they move like: jumping on the chair or making orgasmic faces :D, because they look like monkeys. I think Daria's movement and expression are perfect.
Can anyone point me to where I can find this recording of Vocalise by Kocsis? I have seen his name mentioned a few times (in regards to this piece) but not sure where to find it. Is it on youtube anyplace?
excellent playing enjoying the crescendos and diminuendos in this lovely piece of music which flows as the river in summer through the green meadows of my country.Warmest greetings from the Green Isle of Erin.Billstew
The new arrangement is in conflict with the idea of the original song. Rachmaninov himself said that this piece was his best composition ever, and the most important thing in this piece is that it's perfectly elegant in it's siplicity. The melody line has nothing too much, and yet it expresses everything very clearly. Every note has an important meaning. I think these extra things added in this version are completely unnecessary, they make the piece glittery in an cheap way.
I would agree with you since your comment is valid, in general. However, I treasure this arrangement for its simplicity and delicacy in approach to Rachmaninov's music. I find the ending here to be a true reflection of Rachmaninov's best features: connection with nature and its sounds.
I totally agree! There are times in history (like the italian renaissance) when the human spirit flowers spectacularly. And other times, (the dark ages, the holocaust) when it may utterly die. It shows how much we must depend on other people, on the condition of society or civilisation, to develop our souls. As socrates say in the symposium, the soul has to be led upwards by the magic of conversation, art and natural beauty.
Well, smoothpianist - that was a positive comment (ironic)...I don´t agree with you. There is beautiful art/human love in many ways- today and in the history. It changes, but it´s always there.
Problem is that towards the end she made it a bit too complex... The original tone is a bit lost, although still apparent. The interpretation sorts of distracts the listener at the end.
Really? She is Russian pianist Daria RABOTKINA? Very excellent. You should try the Alan Richardson arrangement that Kissin plays. It's not very difficult to me, and I've just had ANOTHER brain-bypass operation
Could someone please tell me if this piece is in Eb or C minor. And please indicate why it is in either the Major or Minor. This has been worrying me for some time. Thank you.
Hehe manchmal ist Deutsch ein bisschen schwer mit Grammatik und Buchstabieren. Es ist gut, mehr Sprachen zu lernen. Wir wissen nicht, ob wir es brachen oder nicht.
Gorgeous in every way, even though I prefer the Alan Richard arrangement that Kissin performs. 'Babyman9' is right about the filigree, but still it's interesting to hear something new, especially this well-performed. Great. Beautiful. Now how about the Op. 23 preludes?
This young lady understands pain, love and beauty. This cannot be taught - merely coached. And unless she is studying with me, I hope she retains her voice and doesn't get cookie-cut in a conservatory. Not a fan of Koscis' (who arranged this for the piano) arpeggiated coda. It is too filagree a place to go after the stunning dialogue. The harmonies evaporate in the busyness. So I play my own coda with his first three pages-which could not have been done better by Rachmaninov himself.
La vocalise la he tocado con el violin y se que existen versiones para violin y piano.Pero viendo esto me doy cuenta que solo con el piano se le da un enfoque preciso para expresar lo que requiere esta pieza.
