It does not hurt if your dentist anesthetizes it properly (He will numb your tooth). The time it takes differs from tooth to tooth. But expect 1 hour for an easy tooth and about 2 hours for a molar tooth.
@morrison444 In this tooth I had 3 canals which were connected by accessory canals. 3 canals is the most common canal configuration in this tooth, however it is possible to have 1 canal, 2 canals or even 4 canals.
@Belgendo yes, x-ray shows 3 canals and 2 roots. all the nerves are removed but still the tooth pains. i have postponed the final session of putting artificial nerves and sealing the tooth. even my doc does not know what is causing the pain, i might get a second opinion if the pain does not go away since it has already been 3 weeks.
@morrison444 probably there's still a canal what we call an "accessory canal" that your dentist wasn't able to detect. any canal in the root contains nerve and if left untreated this nerve eventually necrotize and will cause extreme pain. this instance is making the treatment failure. but nobody's to blame here, since an accessory canal is so thin which making it so hard to locate or detect and it may not be visible on x-rays.
@dmdjm so what is the solution to remove accessory canal, its been 2 months, i have the permanent filling but have postponed the crown. the pain i mentioned in my first post has come down to almost nil but there is till some kind of activity in there and i am not yet comfortable with the tooth. now the dentist says another tooth is causing the problem and it needs root canal. my question is if all the nerves of a tooth are removed, can another tooth cause pain to root canaled tooth? thanks.
@morrison444 actually you still can feel some discomfort/sensitivity even until 5months after the RCT. as long as there's no pain then that's just fine. but as your dentist told you that another tooth is causing the pain, well probably he saw another pulp problem on the adjacent tooth he was mentioning. a decaying tooth almost always causing problem to its neighboring teeth, since the bacteria is present in the area, it can somehow penetrate in any minute opening on its neighboring teeth.
@morrison444 my answers is no, only the nerves(pulp) of the teeth are causing the pain, once nerves are (successfully) removed it shouldn't cause anymore pain. -and also ask your dentist to trim off the contact of the RCT tooth with its opposing teeth to minimize the pressure and prevent the RCT tooth get traumatized. installing jacket crown over the RCT tooth as final restoration makes the tooth lasts 10x longer. because it will prevent it from fracture and seals all surfaces of tooth's crown.
lol had one yesterday and killed after only because it took so long for some reason the Novocain wore off just after the surgery and before i could get pain killers! horrible pain!
thanks Dr. one last thing, how long did it take you to get used with the oral mirror while working on the mandibular teeth behind the patient? just qurious because the movement through the mirror is the total opposite when working on the maxillary teeth behind the patient at the 11-12 oclock position.... thanks!
I am going to have a root canal and i am 11 about to turn 12 does it hurt and how long does it take because i am SCARED.

@unclepic1 your dentist should've told you to take pain reliever right after the operation to anticipate the wear off of the anesthesia.

does it hurt afterwards? im very curios im only 12T__T
GoodDisplay 1 year ago
@GoodDisplay
It does not hurt, if the tooth is properly anesthetized.
You may feel some discomfort after the treatment. This may take a few days to go away.
But everything should be fine, so do not be afraid.

does the patient feel any pain ever duren the local anesthesia ?
beschier 1 year ago
@beschier
No, the patient does not feel pain during the local anesthesia.
He/She can experience some pain/discomfort when the anesthesia wears off.
But this can be managed by standard painkillers.

Dear Sergio, because I am not yet confident enough in using that technique. Right now, I am using it in more and more cases.
Kind regards,
