This reminds me of a massive subdivision in my area at the top of a mountain. It was going to be some kind of multi million dollar development but when the economy started going bad the developers went bankrupt. There aren't any houses but it's weird to go through and see roads and utilites laid out, ready for houses to be built.
I'd keep an eye on that area for land development. The greatest rule of real estate is buy low and sell high. One thing the bankers learned back in the cowboy days if you can't buy the land then scare them off of it.
the world is reading more and more like a science fiction movie it could scare me if I let but we should take it seriously of course the animals don't scare me as I am Canadian most of our towns are ghost towns while being inhabbited! none the less I wouldn't want to be an American at this point...wow sad!
I heard lots of insects, but I saw no animals. There were no birds, no squirrels, no nothing. Did you see animals when you were there or is it just devoid of animal life?
Hey Jeff I really like these Picher vids. I live in Sapulpa just outside of Tulsa. I go to Branson alot and when I drive down the highway and see the chatpiles it always reminds me of the tornado in Picher. Since this video was taken, how much of the town is Still standing? I heard that they've town alot down. Are alot of the houses (minus tornado homes) still standing? I would love to go by and take pictures sometime. Again thanks for the video! -Scott
@darthvaydr Scott, at this point I would say 75% if not higher have been cleared out. Just after this was shot there was a wildfire that made it's way into part of Pitcher. Then a few days after the fire they got hot n heavy on moving some of the homes worth saving & tore down much of what was left. There are a few places still standing. But nothing like whats seen in this video. I may go there today & make an update video. Thank you for watching & your comment.
Wow, hmmm is this land Toxic? I know a similar Ghost town that looked just like this somewhere else where Monsanto dumped PCB for 10 years close by their town and caused many of those inhabitants to die of cancerous tumors etc.
@EasternMerchant Yes, only this area became toxic from the processing of the lead & zinc mining that happened there. VS. an outside source dumping things.
One of the greatest videos i have ever seen.Very sad to see a town vanish into thin air.I have been doing video production for 23 years and this makes me want to cry.You can almost see the people that once lived there and kids playing in the street.
I just checked it out on Google maps & it's still there.I did the virtual tour, since I hear most of it does not exist anymore. Mind you, the pics are prior to that building wall collapsing where the town had it's final bonfire. I was just checking out abandoned stuff on Youtube & did not know anything about Picher, Oklahoma. Four hours later, I know most of it's history. Such a shame. I'm from Canada & an abandoned town near me just sold for $2500 to developers. For all it's worth,Go Gorilla's!
Hi, My name is John Dial. I grew up in Picher, Oklahoma. The very first house in this film, the blue one, is the last house I lived in before I moved away. We all saw this coming, but how do you leave a place you love that is really the only home you've ever known? Well when your forced out by the powers that be, you have to. And in the end with all the pollution and the unstable ground underneath you well, the writing is on the wall. I'll always love Picher and drive through when I visit.
This is crazy. How many people lived there? Are they still mining there? What do they plan on doing with it now? I looked on google maps and the place doesn't even come up.
@mrstormchaser1966 1640 ppl in 2000 - 20 ppl 2010. It was lead mines & a crazy number like 80% of the lead for ww1 came from these very mines. No they closed YEARS ago. The left over piles of chat are and land is so toxic the did a federal superfund buy out . Yet some how now there is a private company who sell's this toxic crushed rock in Kansas for building material & as sad as that is it's no BS. There are dump trucks hauling it into KS daily.
@FixedByDoc The buy out was just to get everyone out. Now they are just going to let nature take over. Being a lead mine for so long the ground is not fit to be lived on & sink holes are everywhere.
This there just no business there to support a population? Wow, that is creepy. What industry did they have, at one time to support the homes being built?
@CrocoDuck420 THAT'S IF YOU SURVIVE FIRST , THE FIRST WAVE FROM THE ELITE.....IF YOU DON'T HAVE A FALLOUT SHELTER ....YOUR CHANCES OF SURVIVAL ARE 1% ...GOOD LUCK FRIEND
@CrocoDuck420 stupid question dude! if I was part of the elites would I say good luck friend? HELL NO ..im part of the militia movement ...my FIELD NAME IS DOC ..im in Oregon militia company B why I told you 16 hours ago what i said is b/c ...americans are still a sleep ..they are the sheeple ..half of the American population will die b/c they have no clue of whats going on!
This is sad. I hope all those people were able to relocate and find happiness. I am not surprised the Feds have not properly closed this area. The houses should be removed neatly and cleanly and then let nature take over - if it can. I wonder what the lead will cause in the animals that live there. Our government can spend money bombing countries without our consent, but not take care of the obvious.
That's a similar story where I live the government ripped up a hole town just for coal after they had started to mine they realized that the coal was to deep to extract search Yallourn Victoria Australia all that's left is a fucking deep hole
@Prepper7 Well, it was a federal gooberment buy out. So that makes it's federal property. There isn't much for law enforcement "full time" around there. But I would sure as hell think twice before messing around with trying to take anything federal. Not that it's stopped some of the meth-heads scrappers from trying. But there are federal officers around the area & not worth the risk IMO. After all federal charges tend to be on the harsh side & get super-glued on your record.
@Prepper7 It's highly illegal to take anything from, enter any bldgs in or climb on any chat piles around Picher, OK. There are "US PROPERTY NO TRESPASSING" signs posted all over the area. The Ottawa County Sheriff's Dept. is now a fixture in Picher (office located between the high school and field house). They were driving around while we were there March 30, 2011. ** Hard to believe they mined up to the tree roots in some areas around Picher. Makes driving around the area a little eerie!
@RESET1776 You know what would've added even MORE ERIENESS to your vid, playing the 28 dys/wks later theme. Interesting vid though no doubt. It's pretty sad what's taking place in this country and the world over.
I lived in this town. Used to play on those chat piles and swim in that creek, Nobody knew back then that lead was so damaging to people's health. We never gave it a second thought. It's really sad to see Picher this way now. I moved to Texas in the early 80's but my mother and youngest brother stuck around to the end. You actually trained your camera on the house that my brother got bought out of at the beginning of this video.

@BoomStickSgt Sorry, didn't see your comment come in. If you look up "Pitcher Ok" you should get links. But it was a lead mining town back in the day. At one point the water in the creeks ran blood red and was so acidic that it would eat a horse's leg's if it walked in it. Now it's known as Americas biggest superfund site. The gooberment has dumped MILLIONS at this superfund project. But, nobody knows where 90% of that money went because it sure as hell wasn't spent here. Thank you for watching
@RESET1776 wow thats some crasy shit. red creeks that are acidic. thanx you for posting. do you think the government used most of that money to relocate the ppl and subsidise them? or did the ppl get any subsidising?
@BoomStickSgt Yes, they did subsidize for people. But, that didn't even put a dent in the funds that where said to have been spent on it. In 2000 the total pop was only 1,640 & I would say 1/8th of that may have owned a home. Then the gooberment started paying health lawsuit settlements and it's exceed $2 billion of tax payer money. But the settlements dont ad up that big either. It's Sickening!
Times Beach, MO was like that. They tainted the whole area with dioxin. Ended up tearing all structures down, and stripping the top soil. It is now some sort of park.
Nice video, I travel to Picher about every week, one of the 2 remaining business there is a customer that we haul for. The old town is very interesting. Does anyone know where the contents from the mining museums went?
@wrght9185 We do as in the FED Government. The last numbers I saw put it around 30 some billion dollars. I couldnt tell you just where that much money went. But I can tell you it wasnt spent here.
@MrSkaramanga Well, I didnt say when because it's been in the works for years. At this point it's 99% empty. At this point I would say just over a year for being this way. The buyout's where taking some time to get done. But then one of the biggest twisters to hit these parts in like 30 years hit the town last year. With that anyone who was left had to move becauase nobody could rebuild.
@slinkycat321 Your welcome. There was a low end film that was set to be done there. But my understanding was that it was pulled due to of all things politics over a nude shot to be done on the street.
@gasdorf Well that depends on what this way is. Many of the homes where let's just say not very nice even with people living there. But for the most part the town has been empty around two years now.
I am suprised you dont see a bunch of road crew people repaving those roads...i mean really they pissed away a trillion dollars on bull shit, theymay have well repaved those dead roads
@9secondsflat well the funny thing is there is a 5 block polt that has Fed GOV house's sitting empty and they have a crew that come in and cut/trim the lawns. But only for the empty FED GOV homes. The rest just grows wild.
@9secondsflat you would think so. But I guess they feel we need to be protected from ourselves. I am mixed on it. On one hand I say if it's a risk your willing to take more power to you. But then I think once your house falls into the ground when a sinkhole opens under it. Well, at that point many people we be risking their own lives to save you.
Thank you for posting this. People need to see reality. In my podunk town (the most economically depressed city in all of MN), there are defunct buildings right where our population sign is. It's not a pleasant feeling driving home and seeing that every day.
@imjustagirl776 Thank you for the comment. It is hard driving past places like this almost everyday. I hate to say it, but there is a point you just kinda go numb to seeing it.
@BumperTapper2 Yes, it's sad to see. The thing is these where lead and zinc mines. They where so large that over 50% of the lead used in WW1 came from here. With that there are mine shafts that go from state - state underground. Plus the poisons from it are off the charts. I will do another vid talking about it. But time mag did this as a cover because is so bad plus being tops in Gov. spending @ 42 billion in 2004. Guess what, It wasnt spent here I can tell you that.
Profits for them, these kinds of things for us. And they will keep doing this until the entire US completely looks like a third world slum if it means a dollar for them and control over the slave masses.
Thats it. The mines went belly up and the companies just closed and walked away. By the time they understood just how bad this was there was nothing left for them to go after. Now we as tax payers have put out over 42 BILLION as of 2004. It took them that much money to come up with move everyone out and give up a contract to sell the chat out of state for of all things recover and fill dirt roads. So the answer was move the ppl and spread the poison around in the next state.
@Philnatic1776 It wouldnt get past the first night before you had federal company. There is a group of FED. GOV. houses in the center of town they are trying to keep from being wrecked before they get moved. With that they have a gaurd that comes around once in awhile. If there is a car or truck parked anywhere after dark it will get called in. Most doing the stripping get dropped off and keep low while they do their deed. Otherwise it's just kids drinking and breaking things for fun.
This reminds me of a massive subdivision in my area at the top of a mountain. It was going to be some kind of multi million dollar development but when the economy started going bad the developers went bankrupt. There aren't any houses but it's weird to go through and see roads and utilites laid out, ready for houses to be built.

Nice video, I travel to Picher about every week, one of the 2 remaining business there is a customer that we haul for. The old town is very interesting. Does anyone know where the contents from the mining museums went?

Who owns this place now?
wrght9185 1 year ago
@wrght9185 We do as in the FED Government. The last numbers I saw put it around 30 some billion dollars. I couldnt tell you just where that much money went. But I can tell you it wasnt spent here.
RESET1776 1 year ago
Good vid, question, how many years ago was it abandoned? I don't remember hearing you say it in your vid, if you did I missed it.
MrSkaramanga 1 year ago
@MrSkaramanga Well, I didnt say when because it's been in the works for years. At this point it's 99% empty. At this point I would say just over a year for being this way. The buyout's where taking some time to get done. But then one of the biggest twisters to hit these parts in like 30 years hit the town last year. With that anyone who was left had to move becauase nobody could rebuild.
RESET1776 1 year ago
you should look up Centralia, PA. Same thing with a twist. Instead of acid water, the coal mines are literally burning underneath the town.
jdouglasfisher 1 year ago
@jdouglasfisher I will look that up. Thats just a nightmare thinking the town is burning from underground.

Drove through a while back and it was eerie and saddening. Hated to see red clay almost gone. Lot of good times there in the 70's
500rancher 1 year ago
@500rancher Yes, the 70's and 80's where on the lets just say wild side around these parts.

This is an amazing spooky video. That place would be good for a set for some post-apocalyptic movie. Thanks for sharing it with us.
slinkycat321 1 year ago
@slinkycat321 Your welcome. There was a low end film that was set to be done there. But my understanding was that it was pulled due to of all things politics over a nude shot to be done on the street.

@RESET1776 how long did it take to get this way?
gasdorf 1 year ago
@gasdorf Well that depends on what this way is. Many of the homes where let's just say not very nice even with people living there. But for the most part the town has been empty around two years now.

I am suprised you dont see a bunch of road crew people repaving those roads...i mean really they pissed away a trillion dollars on bull shit, theymay have well repaved those dead roads
9secondsflat 1 year ago
@9secondsflat well the funny thing is there is a 5 block polt that has Fed GOV house's sitting empty and they have a crew that come in and cut/trim the lawns. But only for the empty FED GOV homes. The rest just grows wild.
RESET1776 1 year ago
if people an live in down town hiroshima and nagasaki, they can live in that area..
9secondsflat 1 year ago
@9secondsflat you would think so. But I guess they feel we need to be protected from ourselves. I am mixed on it. On one hand I say if it's a risk your willing to take more power to you. But then I think once your house falls into the ground when a sinkhole opens under it. Well, at that point many people we be risking their own lives to save you.

@RESET1776 We have LOT of towns like this in Georgia.
Sad

Thank you for posting this. People need to see reality. In my podunk town (the most economically depressed city in all of MN), there are defunct buildings right where our population sign is. It's not a pleasant feeling driving home and seeing that every day.
imjustagirl776 1 year ago
@imjustagirl776 Thank you for the comment. It is hard driving past places like this almost everyday. I hate to say it, but there is a point you just kinda go numb to seeing it.
RESET1776 1 year ago
Sad what happened to that town. They wipe out communities and don't even care.
BumperTapper2 1 year ago
@BumperTapper2 Yes, it's sad to see. The thing is these where lead and zinc mines. They where so large that over 50% of the lead used in WW1 came from here. With that there are mine shafts that go from state - state underground. Plus the poisons from it are off the charts. I will do another vid talking about it. But time mag did this as a cover because is so bad plus being tops in Gov. spending @ 42 billion in 2004. Guess what, It wasnt spent here I can tell you that.
RESET1776 1 year ago
@BumperTapper2
Profits for them, these kinds of things for us. And they will keep doing this until the entire US completely looks like a third world slum if it means a dollar for them and control over the slave masses.
operator223 1 year ago
@operator223

Philnatic1776 1 year ago
@Philnatic1776 It wouldnt get past the first night before you had federal company. There is a group of FED. GOV. houses in the center of town they are trying to keep from being wrecked before they get moved. With that they have a gaurd that comes around once in awhile. If there is a car or truck parked anywhere after dark it will get called in. Most doing the stripping get dropped off and keep low while they do their deed. Otherwise it's just kids drinking and breaking things for fun.
