I'd like to try this song with piano and electric guitar with an ebow. It wouldnt sound anything like an erhu i know, but it might sound pretty cool. Or is that blasphemy?
The first part of the song..Prior to the Faster Portion..is quite reminiscent of a Music segment (Erhu & Piano) by Composer Tats Lau called "Wonton Soup" in the risque movie (1994) "Erotique" (movie is essentially 5 short stories) one of which is about a Young Couple in love in Hong Kong, very powerful song for a USA born white dude, me.
I just looked up a Taiwanese black metal band call Chthonic and saw that a member plays the erhu. I had no idea what it was and looked it up and found this.
Ever since I came across this devine (pun intended) piece of erhu music 2 years ago, I tried to find out more about the composer-soloist and her other works. Finally today my effort pays off. Her name is Qi Xiao Chun (戚曉春) and there is another video of hers on youtube:
im looking for a modern er hu musician with piano solo but sexy jazz like style. i want to hear a modern version of this instrument's potential!!! can anyone recommend?
i almost say that the chinese violin is far more expressive than the europian and american violin. I love the vibrato and/or tremolo and the singing of the instrument.
I wish there was someone here in Santa Barbara, California, who plays the Erhu, because I want to use this instrument on one of my songs, it would be perfect. The most expressive, poignant instrument i know.
All I knew about this instrument before this was I loved to hear it when the guy in dundas square played it. Now next time I'm in China town I'm gonna look for a cheap starter one :)
you can order cheap but excellent erhus from a site who ships worldwide. I got mine and i am in ireland. If you want i can tell you the site to buy from.
Asian traditional music always captivates me but this has got to be one of the most beautiful sounding instruments that i've ever heard. It's melodies pierce my very soul...it's amazing
Ms. Qi is absolutely talented. Every year she composes a piece of erhu (two-string Chinese violin) music for the 'Divine Performing Arts World Tour', which has toured in over 80 cities around the world in year 2009. Highly recommend to experience it live. Indeed, it touches deep inside, so does the whole performance. Theatre goers and critics deem the performance mind blowing, once a life time experience.
This is phenomenal... Being an Australian born Chinese, and not having much to do with my heritage and culture for 27 years of my life... I think i'll take this up.. Grown up listening to this stuff, but didnt think much about it.. Amazing how a musicians mind works.. only takes one piece to change your take on a certain genre... Now...to find a decent Erhu at a decent price... especially in OZ.. Anyone in Oz that can help me find one??
Every now and then I feel I need to listen to this pice, does any one els think it sounds like the instrument is singing, and that one can sence and almost understand the languge it uses? (specially in 3:40 it sounds like talking)
i dont know chinese but does it in some way sound like this?
Yeah I was just thinking the exact same thing, it really does sound like the instrument is singing. It has the emotional range of a human voice, it's beautiful!
me encanta el sonido del erhu yo antes pemnsava k lo k usavan los japneses era una flauta pero como le davan ese toke de pas en el sonido? y no era un violin era un erhu
This video is where I come to to relax and recharge my inner peace and strength. Thank you to NDTV and the performers in this peice. The music is very much like a transition or journey from China to Ireland, the two places I would visit and stay a while if I could get past the politics in either place. Again thank you.
I like the title of the song, for me it's as if the first part symbolises life as a single, learning, experiencing, falling in a harsh world, but then you suddenly stumble on that special person, passion and flaming love sets in and the predestined relationship starts
chthulma... Characters? There's only one character. :-P
It's 緣, which means "reason," "cause," and has to do with a Chinese concept of things that are predetermined (destint/fate-related) and can't be avoided.
Gave me shivers. I love this instrument, it reflects the spirit of China.
