  • Any recommendations for creating a very graphic subject w/well defined counters in watercolor? I appreciate watercolor paintings but have no interest in the creating the murky, impressionistic style that seems so popular with many watercolorists. I am more interested in using watercolors to emphasize/accent an ink under-drawing rather than having the colors take center stage. Only seen a few examples of this style from other artists. Is glazing technique best for achieving this result?

  • As a teacher I do not try to turn anyone into another "me", am happy to help reply though I am an Impressionist & feel using the medium for it's best attributes is favourite :-) OK 1. Try ACRYLIC MEDIUM with first washes as this will fix them & not allow lifting. Thus clear sharp edges. 2. A little GUM ARABIC with your water will give an extra gloss and depth. The style you talk of is mainly done by glazing over existing pen yes. But will still uses graduated washes and blending. Tones vital.

  • I love the rubber band idea. I've never seen that before.

  • Yes - this and many more ideas and info are on my 2 hr. film = drawing and colour - giving you a foundation to scale, perspective, tone, textureand lots lots more!

  • Stupendous demo. Love that you explain as you paint.
