I love the Janis and Erma versions. They are both brilliant and never equalled. ##Credit to Wikipedia here are some basic facts: ## Erma Franklin's original recording: 1967 The original version of "Piece of My Heart" was recorded by Aretha Franklin's older sister Erma in 1967. A top ten R&B hit in the U.S. also peaked 62 on the U.S. Pop Singles chart. ##Janis Joplin with Big Brother and the Holding Company version "Piece of My Heart" from the album "Cheap Thrills" 1968
Until today, I had not heard this version of this song. Have always loved Janis' version, but this is really, really wonderful. This is just one truly amazing song. Another incredibly beautiful version was done by Delaney & Bonnie, before Janis recorded it. You all should check it out, because Bonnie Bramlett does this song some real justice with her amazingly powerful voice.
Just because a song is originally sung by a black artist...why is it that if a white person sings it they are "never as good" as the black artist? I'm serious. I am so tired of reverse racism in this country. Janis Joplin had a great respect for black singers and gave them credit. Why can't others do the same? By the way, I prefer her version over this one and I am a white girl who thinks Aretha Franklin is one of the best female singers ever.
@walthers8 Hey man, I agree! Besides, no one wants to diminish themselves by saying another's expression of themselves isn't any good based on something as silly as skin color as opposed to what it meant to them and how it makes us, the listeners, feel.. They are BOTH good music compared to a lot of other things these days anyway!!
@walthers8 Who says this version is better? People here perhaps they searched this song out, so they probably like it. But other wise have you ever heard this version?? The Janis one is pretty standard meaning people consider it the better one. Isn't it kind of more racist that Black people sang so many songs originally and the famous version that's not even considered a "version" is the white person singing it that most people consider to be the original.
@TASLOCO702 pretty ignorant comment. Although Erma recorded it first, she doesn't really deserve credit for that. She didn't write the song and I'm sure it was the record company that chose for her to record the song not her. How can you say that no cover can ever beat the original? How does a song "beat" another song? I prefer Janis's version, but I won't say its better than this version. I'll leave the official decisions on ranking music to the experts like you
@Fluffhead234508 listen,i was just stating my thoughts, and a few facts,i wasnt trying to offend anyone in any way,, i also wasnt posing to be a "expert" on music,,, im just a kid speaking my mind on what i thought was true,, if im wrong in any way,, alright then
@TASLOCO702 Good info - thanks ..... I agree with your 1st thing tho I would say (sacrilege) that George Harrison almost (or maybe does !!!!!???) get there on Chuck Berry's ROLL OVER BEETHOVEN !
The original, genuiene bona-fide version, and the best version. Great song from 1967, wouldn't get tired of listening to this classic from Erma. Thanks.
@357HFC Sure it was the 60's, Vinyl and all but her sister Aretha's vocals were always on top of the music and she was part of the same era. But than again that was Aretha.
@lindasongs I have to agree, the mixing is pretty poor, its really hard to hear her at times. :( I listen to tons of 60;s music and earlier, and the lead singer doesn't usually sound this lost in the mix, but its not Erma;s fault. :(
Wowsers, if the bass was any louder in this song my eye balls would implode. Hats off the Erma!

This is a great version, and I know it's the original, but I'm sorry Janis perfected it.
Guat175242 10 months ago
@Guat175242 for me it's Janis' signature song. From Erma Franklin it's a great blues number, from Janis it's pure energy!
stoffls 10 months ago
AMAZING! Janis took a GREAT song, made it her own, just like Haley did... all versions are great in their own way...fairly different one another.

janis' version is bit too rocky for my tastes, this version is just smoother.

Janis covered the best, that's for sure!
redhairedlad 1 year ago
First thing's first: no cover can ever beat any original EVER,under any circumstances.
Second:both versions are amazing, and sung with passion and soul.
Third:covers are not always always supposed to sound exactly the same.
Fourth:yes,Emma is Aretha's sister
Fifth:yes,Janis is white, and Emma is black.that has nothing to do with the song.
Sixth and lastly:the famous cover is by Big Brother & the Holding Company not just Janis, she was in that band

I don't no, fair enough, this might be better than janis's but it sure as heck isn't the best known version
But Hendrix's version of All along the watchtower, just a tad bit better, im into psychadelic rock though, so bias

Killer!! I had no idea Aretha had a sister who sang!
I only wish they had mixed it better.
They should have brought down the instruments alittle, and the backing vocals
and put her voice more on the top.

I agree. This is indeed the best version, this lady did it first and best! Janis Joplin had nothing on Erma Franklin!
Of course they were two different singers from two different musical genres. But Franklin's original is more my style.
