Before this episode came out, I would always use this operant conditioning method as a way of making girlfriend. It sometimes worked. But.. oh well... now everybody knows.
@SpecialGuy21 It's actually Behavior Analysis.... Reinforcing segments of behavior to get a certain outcome. Many therapies use this technique in different ways.... but it's definitely Behavior Analysis... e.g B.F. Skinner training the dogs/rats with food/water. (I had to do this in my rat lab class).
This isn't CBT, it's more like positive reinforcement (reinforcing a behaviour by rewarding or giving something). CBT aims to change behaviour by changing thoughts (cognitions) and core beliefs based on the theory that thoughts, feelings and behaviours are all linked, and if you modify one, you can modify the others.
That being said, I love Big Bang Theory, and this was a really funny episode!

@StoryBPhotography Sorry but clearly you aren't since the scene exhibits operant conditioning techniques.

I'd definitely say that this exemplifies operant conditioning, rather than CBT :)

Leonard: Okay, I know what you're doing.
Sheldon: Really?
Leonard: Yes! You're using chocolate as positive reinforcement for what you consider correct behavior!
Sheldon: Very good........... Chocolate?

I love this TV show but I would like to know if this was a real example of cognitive behavioral therapy?
MrSymposier 2 years ago
