If I was Elena and could choose, I chose Stefan. Damon is maybe, pretty, a little bit crazy, he has nice smile, but Stefan´s love is true. He was compelled by Klaus, did horrible things, but his love to Elena was (and is) strong, no matter what. Damon loved Katherine, he knew she was bad, but when he found out Katherine didn´t love him, he turned to Elena. Stefan found Elena and his feelings are not temporary. Damon maybe loves Elena a lot, but chemistry between Elena and Stefan is deeper..

@Guernica20 I respectfully disagree. Damon didn't turn to Elena, his affections grew for her after she gave him a chance, something that nobody had ever bothered doing before. His intentions were never to even get close to Elena, he happened to fall in love because of how she treats him. Stefan may still love Elena, but Damon has been there for Elena out of nothing but love since Stefan's departure, unconditionally. That's also deep love. Now she's starting to reciprocate those feelings.

@Pariz31 I totally agree. I don't see how some people don't see that. Damon came into Mystic Falls fully intending on bringing Katherine back, and he just wanted to love and be loved back. But as soon as sweet and compassionate Elena came along, that all changed. Elena in 1x03 says 'I'm sorry, you lost her too' to Damon and that might have been the first moment that someone showed understanding/concern for him. In that scene, Elena pretty much summed up Damon's life with those words.
