  • If there is no guitar on this I'm a dutchman! I'd also think he was using an Arp Sequencer and probably more than one Odyssey although think that is duophonic unlike the minimoog and of course a timecode synced (to sequencer) tape machine.

  • DAMN!!!! And its VINYL TOO!!!

  • My middle school jazz band is gonna play this in January :)

  • @DemonRoxxie that's sweet, my old middle school jazz band played this a few years ago too :)

  • I gotta stop listening to this for a second. The grooviness is so counterproductive when it comes to doing homework. This music is too awesome to be played in the background

  • @ChosenEpicDuel

So cool. I'm taking my kid, about the same age, to see Return to Forever.

Same venue as when I saw them live at 15 years old too.

    Life is good.

  • @ChosenEpicDuel Wow. So what does your age matter?

  • @ChosenEpicDuel me too XD

  • @ChosenEpicDuel It doesn't matter how old you are. Age really doesn't factor into appreciation of music.

  • @ChosenEpicDuel What's your age got to do with it? I was into jazz music at the age of 6!

  • @ChosenEpicDuel I'm 12 and I love herbie ._.

  • @masterpetesdude Great!!!!!!!

  • @ChosenEpicDuel I don't care how old you are you cunt

  • @ChosenEpicDuel I'm sexy and I know it

  • This was a big roller skate jam at this rink called the Huber Heights Roller Rink.

    Much appreciated.

  • 0 dislikes. all right!

  • @bunfoo96 It is one ! :-s

  • when was this released?

  • @Django5198 , this was rleased in 1972 or 73.

  • damm digital underground lifted the bass for underwater rimes. it bumps a vicious beat in my pimped out caddy.

  • Classic stuff that has stood the test of time. Long live Herbie!!

  • Epic =D

  • It would sound much better when you played it on +4 speed!!!

  • My 2 and a half year old loooooooves this. He keeps saying, "Soooo funky.".

  • drumming is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo dope :)

  • LOVE those drumms!

  • I wish there was a repeat, so I could rest my eyes and drift away into this song till I fall asleep.

  • fyi, the single-note "guitar" riff was played on BASS guitar (Paul Jackson), way down on the neck. At least that's they way they did it live-on-stage (up to Herbie's synth solo, also played on an Odyssey). However, the album notes also credit Jackson for playing a "marimbula" which may be the sound we hear on this studio cut. No guitar.

The clavinet (keyboard) handles the "guitar" chords thru a guitar effects (wah-wah) pedal. The opening "bass line" is an Arp Odyssey (keyboard synth).

  • @xalambalax Not to be OCD, but the guitar actually plays 4 notes in that riff.

  • @EricBarbaric78 Guitar? Interesting. How do you know this? (and who is the "guitar player"??)

  • @xalambalax I have no idea who the guitar player is, but the guitar that' comes in at 40 seconds I know is playing 4 notes because (1) I can tell because I play guitar, and (2) I can count...lol

  • @EricBarbaric78 Whatever you say, dude.

  • @xalambalax If I am wrong, please enlighten me. I don't mean that sarcastically. I would really, truly like to be corrected if I am wrong.

  • @xalambalax: seems you mean "way UP the neck", not "down", right?

  • @guitarajs22 Yes there is ya dumb dumb. listen closely, its called subtle layering.

  • @GaryTheAssBelonker there is no guitar on this track

  • @EyMeng there definitely is

  • @EyMeng No guitar??? lmao Maybe you were looking for a Rock style thrash sound maybe as the only sound guitars can make in your view? Take your ass to a music class!

Or you can view the actual session when Herbiew recorded this with his band. It's in 2 parts and u can find it on here. There were not 1 but THREE guitar players!

  • @JayGriffinblaze Can't tell if trolling; look up the album this was on (Head Hunters) on wikipedia; search for the word "guitar" using ctrl + F

  • @EyMeng Not trolling. Don't need to look it up on Wiki, I HAVE the album and can see the credits. I've also seen live footage even on here and there are clearly bass guitarist Paul Jackson at work.

Since Wikipedia is filled by individuals not professionals I wouldn't rush out swearing by it just bcuz it included a line which says HH tried to do away with guitar in favour of the Clavinet for the album. For THIS song, Paul Jackson is on the bass as many have also stated.

  • @JayGriffinblaze I can't find any album info crediting a guitar player, but plenty NOT crediting one. guess I'll have to buy the album. I want to believe you so we can end this debate; hell, I'll message you my email if you can send me a pic of the credits on your album...

  • @JayGriffinblaze and since you aren't trolling,I listen to classic rock, classical, jazz, fusion, but never thrash metal. Yes, it sound's plenty like a subtlely layered guitar. In my music class it was played on the speakers, and I overheard a classmate saying that there are no guitars on the album.I've been hearing it everywhere. How, after so much evidence, could the proof of the contrary be so blatant as a plainly printed credit to one or more guitar players?Help me so i can inform others!!

  • Best of jazz funk....drummer in the pocket

  • I fucking love this song

  • awesome muted guitar

  • @legsbro actually there is no guitar on this track

  • dope shit

  • drums = perfect
