Ever read or heard about the Religion of Zalmoxis? My ancestors, on my father's line, the Dacians, who were later Latinised and even later Slavised, had this most interesting religion about the love for land, the honor in our lives and the courage we must show through faith. When the Romans conquered Sarmisegetusa, the Dacian men cut their own throats, and the women and children drank poison, after burning the city, to spare themselves of the shame of being conquered. You should read into it. :)
Christianity came to Brazil destroyed all the culture and stolen the lands of the aboriginals. I'm a direct germanic descendent and when I heard about Asatru I knew in my heart it was what I always believed, Its wierd how I always thought like you guys even thoght I've never met the religion. I feel eased now, almost like I returned home from a long travel, everything makes sense. I'll join the Asatru like my ancestors did, and learn more about my ancient culture of origin. sorry for my english.
Thanks for these intelligent and good-willing explanations about Asatru. It's about time we gather wisdom about our past and reconnect to our ancestors ways. Everytime I study and live Asatru is like talking to my old Kin, It is trully heart-warming.
Not in the sense of Someone who created the universe "ex nihilo." I interpret the Eddas to mean that the universe evolved by natural law - thus, humans do not "belong" to any supreme being, but are rather free, friends and kin to the Gods.
I am new to Asatru- it has been less than one day, and the religion is making sense. I am of the USA, and here I feel Christianity and Jesus are being forced into my psyche. I wanted to let you all know that Asatru has followers here in the West as well. However, I do have questions about where I may find all the Gods and Goddesses, how to to truly be initiated as an Asatruar (one who follows Asatru?), and just any other basic knowledge. I am youth, please help me escape a spiritual plight!
@HeadbangersGalore I hear ya. But years of hardship duringthe dark ages and then Christianity seeping into Europe and being forced upon at any given chance. I personally depise Christianity and how it got so popular. I don't despise the people who worship Christ all that much but majorly how its got to the point where its like a disease. And honestly I never knew people revived this religion until I accidently stumbled upon Asatru like 3 months ago. And now I'm a pagan and proud of it! :D
@HeadbangersGalore i am in the exact situation as you brother... christianity is an imperialist "belief". it destroyed both of my sides of heritage, Cherokee and Apache native americans... and eastern european (german, dutch, Norwegian, and generally scandinavian).

One American site I looked at had radio podcasts and the two young people running it had met at high-school and it turned out they were both Jews. ?!?!
@DeutschesLeid It's absolutely not for all races and peoples. The religion was born from the folk so it stays for the folk. Call it racist, but that's how it is. How odd would it be to see Chinese people practicing Native African rituals? Same goes for different races practicing our Germanic faith. If someone not of Germanic, or the extent of European stock, wants to adopt our faith, they should first look within themselves.
@SenatorGrimshaw Yep thats how it pretty much how it is. Just because its a white thing does it make it racist? Hell no! It just means that we have our true religion back! But I would love to see Chinese practice African rituals rofl! xD
Hello from Denmark... I'm a nordic witch, and i'm in a Blót group... I find combinding those two (witch/pagan path and asatru) is really giving for me in partiqular, but those i'm with, never really explained too me about blót... These vidios are so good for me... Now I understand what i'm doing and why... Thank you so much...
It is good that Asatru is not a religion based on supplication. But the root of the world blot is the same as blood, just as blessing is like the OE bletsian, to sprinkle blood upon someone. Where is the blood? Is there a blood sacrifice? I will have to watch the next part....
Even the word "bless" in modern English is actually related to the term for sprinkling blood on something. However, as he says, Blot simply means blessing.
@airsofter345 you can do it by yourself, you do not need a horn for the mead, just use a cup or something, and yes you can do the Blot anytime you want but on big occasions with others is more fun!
Not really converted yet (I'm agnostic and hard to sell) but I've been learning what I can about the Pagan faiths.
Your description of the Blot as an exchange of gifts is so much more elegant than what I've heard before.
I heard it once mistakenly called a "sacrifice," but that term sounds positively dirty to me; it implies a debt. Your description of "gift giving" sounds much better.
Though I have to disagree with you on the fact that Christians grovel as I am one (and I may take some heat for it, judging by some comments) I respect Asatru and find it facinating. I'm glad the Old Ways have found purchase in the increasingly technocratic 21s centuary. Good video, I thoughly enjoyed it.
I find it highly interesting that you call this Asatru, when it seems to have extremely little to do with what we know about what the Vikings believed. What you're talking about has little or no support in the Eddas not the Icelandic sagas.
No, nothing this guy is talking about finds support in the Eddas nor anything else we know about Germanic paganism.
Please, at least try to make a convincing argument, inestead of writing "actually, it has got quite a bit to do with it" and not citing any sources what so ever.
Asatru IS the modern, reconstructed, "neo" (ew) pagan religion of the Norse people. Just because things aren't discussed in the Eddas or Sagas doesn't mean they are disingenuous or contrived. We also must go to historical and archaeological evidence, like the pagan temple of Uppsala, to mold and form our belief system. We're not Christians, we don't have a holy scripture to follow, so we must make do with what we have.
and remember a lot of manuscripts have been lost or destroyed,
Asatru is, and will always be, a new age belief bearing only superficial resemblance to ancient north germanic paganism.
The only sources we have are the Sagas, the Eddas and the Skaldic poems and sparse archaeological findings. We know very little about the rituals and the form of the religion of the ancient norse, and a lot of what asatru is about, finds no support in any of our known sources. As long as you've no evidence for what your claims, they are to be regarded as false until proved
I've read all of the sagas etc and most of them in the original language. They do mention the rituals and traditions, but extremely little about how they were practiced. You can't just make things up, give them an old norse name and claim they are the traditions and beliefs of the Vikings. That's plainly lying, my friend.
I've got nothing against Asatru as a religion, I really don't care what they believe. The thing I've got a problem with, is their claim of practicing the
"How many times have christians and jews and muslims remoulded and "made-up" new traditions and beliefs? MANY. "
I don't see how that's a reconciling thing. You are free to believe whatever you want, I couldn't care less, just don't claim it's got anything to do with the Viking religion, because that just isn't true.
CONTINUED: religion of the old norse. That just is a lie and a delusion.
Oh, and do check up on the recent papers on the temple at Uppsala, the scientific consensus nowadays leans toward there never having been an actual temple at Uppsala.
This does not make them any less jewish or whatever in my opinion. Same to neo pagainism which suffers from severe dis respect from most, not saying you, folk. All culture and religion is evolving and re-moulding pagainsim with respect and sincerity should be given equal status to the "real" religions of jedo-christian islamic faiths. In my opinion.
In the end it is also yearning for a ethnic/cultural spiritual connection and we do not need only have judaism as the only leigit one. These faiths are like japanese shinto, save shinto was never repressed so cruely. Sorry to blab so long and really du respect your opinion so this is not an attack. :)
Is a deep-seated yearning for the destruction of everything on earth, and the earth itself, contrary to Asatru?
I mean, if you wish death on every person you see, look at a forest and hope it burns to cinder, look forward to every war, famine, tornado, tsunami, and hurricane. Is that counter to the spirit of Asatru?
Perhaps you are a descendent of the Fire Giant Surt, who is supposed to set all the worlds afire at Ragnorok. I would say you perhaps COULD prescribe to the beliefs of the Asatru, but you would be on the other side, kinda like what a Satanist is to a Christian (not that I want to compare Asatru to Christianity just using it as a comparison).
Someone really should at least try to rebuild the old Temple at Uppsala. Maybe that would make Europe pull its head out of Islam's ass before it's too late.
We should not build anything X-tian more and nomosk'e or anything thats not Asathru. fuck them all, iff they want that the could move to Rome ,Jerusalem or Mecca
Mr Mcnallen is great,, I wish we could help eachother too rebuild The old religions. In Sweden we a building Mosk'es instead and it makes me sad. help our leaders to not get corrupted by the Islam.
We shouldn't just be rebuilding temples in Northern Europe. We should encourge our kinsmen, the Hellenic and Roman Polytheists, the Finnish, Celtic, and Slavic Polytheists to build temples in their homelands as well.
@joonte1010 yeah but years of hardship duringthe dark ages and then Christianity seeping into europe and being forced upon at any given chance given. I personally depise how christianity got so popular. I don't despise the people who worship Christ all that much but majorly how its got to the point where its like a disease. And honestly I never knew people revived this religion until I accidently stumbled upon Asatru like 3 months ago. And now I'm a pagan and proud of it! :D
Wallywelvet, Yeah this is happening in the UK aswell as some other parts of Europe.
We looked after our lands before these Foriegn religions arrived. It surprising how much they stole from us over the hundreds of years. The last 4hundred years they have contributed nothing for the good of Human kind! Absolutely NOTHING!. We let them come in and devide us. Look what religion did to Ireland? Natives fighting Natives.Over Imported foriegn religion!
Yes, I don't want to live in a country were people are killed for choosing other religions. Were woman are lashed for being victims of rape, rise up against Islam!
@wallywelvet Its been rebuilding for many years but has only recently been out into the mainstream and is working amazingly. In my mind, one of the biggest things we can do to help rebuild is to expose Asatru to others by informing them that we are indeed a legit religion and have been since...well, forever. I'm not saying go around to random peoples houses like alot of Christian denominations do alothough it would work with the exposing, it would only both anger and annoy everyone. =)
Yes. Food is also always approriate. For instance, if you give a favorite meal or dish, it would be a sacrifice on your part. That shows your dedication & integrity. I've even heard of people making gifts of wood or clay and giving them. Anything you might use or enjoy yourself but instead choose to give to the Gods is perfectly fine.
Great video. Oh, and great dignified presentation; thanks for using your real name (as opposed to "Lord High Muckeymuck") and for NOT dressing as if you're going to a RenFaire. Your hair, beard and clothing look very dignified and respectable. (And you're a very handsome man!) I think appearances matter a great deal and there's no call to look like one is stuck in the 14th century. We live in the 21st century now, and it's a grand thing, to be Heathen in this time and in this place.
I agree, it's important to have a professional appearance, especially when representing a religion that may be scary (because it's unknown) to other people. I'd say Mr. Mcnallen sheds a good light on us.
you are one of the people who make me happy about the existence of youtube!
Although I prefer not to use the term Asatru because the Aesir aren't the only important gods, the Vanir and even tree or water spirits are also important to me.
This is truely one of the most intelligent, heartfelt, and relevant things I've ever heard spoken regarding ANY pagan path. Thank you for making this video and many blessings on you for spreading such a level headed and intelligent explanation.
I'm glad that Steve's views come across so well. This is but the tip-of-the-iceberg of his knowledge. If you ever get a chance to attend one of his blots, you will remember it always.

I can never thank Mr. Mcnallen enough for providing spiritual guidance and courage to worship the gods and goddesses.
i hope to have the honor of meeting him one day.

I really like the way he described the nature of blot.

Can someone offer something other than alcoholic beverages to the gods? If I were to offer milk or tea or a soft drink, would they accept it?
HoundofOdin 3 years ago 3
I routinely offer milk on Friday evening to Frigga. It's just a personal devotion I do, and She seems to appreciate it.

In fact a very reasonable speach, you give a very good picture of the blot :)

wonderful video!
you are one of the people who make me happy about the existence of youtube!
Although I prefer not to use the term Asatru because the Aesir aren't the only important gods, the Vanir and even tree or water spirits are also important to me.
Hails from Holland!

Truly intelligent, well-read man. I hope to see more benign faiths like folk religion revived in all cultures in the future. Asatru included.

Reviving own ancient Folkway and bringing awareness to the larger society is a daily challenge in the AFA, but the rewards are seen and felt. We appreciate all who support us in our work. Sheila McNallen
