I was born in Grand Rapids in November of '78. Even though my family and I moved to Minnesota at the end of the 80s, I still call GR my home. Anytime I go back, whenever I see the Amway Grand Hotel, I know I am home! Can't wait to go back someday.
@viperdk28 we live the same story bro. i was born in grand rapids in november '93, years later i moved to vermont with my mom. i can't get over my years grand rapids, i'm proud to call myself a michigander and also can't wait to go back someday!
I am from Grand Rapids, MI and because of the deplorable economy up there I was forced to move to Arizona. Those photos bring back memories... The early maps of Grand Rapids, MI are located in the archives (Gas Light Village) in the Museum. I am homesick for Vitale's pizza located on Emerald & Leonard and I miss my family and friends up there. Union HIgh School, Class of 1974
Grand Rapids is a much more fun place to visit than Detroit, in terms of the city anyway(Detroit has excellent suburbs + Ann Arbor area). Plus, the lake is just about 40 minutes away! It's a very cool town and I'll probably want a condo as a second home there in a few years, I'm just waiting for a few more high rises.
yeah I lived in london for 15 years, may not have the gun crime but knifes and drinking issues make up for that. I want to punch the poet who said "those tired of London are tire of life" because he wasn't talking about Chavs 21rst teens
I like the look of the downtown. While the city does not have extremely tall buildings, it definitely has more multi-story office buildings than a lot of cities its size. Nice skyline.
I live in Comstock Park and I love it. I went to CPHS and played football and baseball. I really enjoy the diversity of the Grand Rapids area. I lived in downtown G.R. for 7 years or so when I was younger. I have since been to many big cities around the U.S. I think that living downtown and also in the suburbs have really helped shape me. For example I went on a mission trip after Katrina and could walk the streets of New Orlenas without fear. I consider myself well rounded and somewhat worldly
A nice place to move to from Rough parts of Detroit/ Chicago.
I moved to Chicago and been there for 3 years now, and I feel really homesick and want to move back to G.R. but the low economy, I might as well stay at Crazy ol Chicago til the Economy gets back in feet and Democratic to come back.
I had to split up with my GF cuz she wasnt from around here, and couldnt get a job at all. waitress, bartender, anything just to get her on her feet. nothing. she coulda done better, but she would have taken anything. and found nothing. She had to move out of state, I miss her.
Since I moved to Chicago 3 years ago, I lost bunch of my friends in G.R. because they moved out of Michigan too because of the same thing, before I moved out of G.R., I worked in Manpower as a temp at Amway Corporation, I miss that place but can't get a steady good job with a Associates Degree, so I had to move out, I miss G.R. tho, I love it in Chicago but It starts to get near more dangerous as Detroit.
Grand Rapids is the nicest big city in Michigan. I mean you got Detroit, Flint and Sag Nasty to compete with but still, GR really is a nice place and one of the best places in Michigan to live.
2:36-2:40: Ohh man, I miss the old Grand Center and Hall of Justice on Monroe/Bridge. I miss the Rapid (GRATA) buses layover on Monroe/Michigan, then Transit Center on Ionia/Lyon
i live there!! YEa!! its a nice city ot live in.. hey subscribe to my videos!!im pretty funny!! wel... maybe not but still subscribe to me.. cause i need friends!!
The only reason you like GR is cuz of one person? That's some dumb reasoning. If u like London so much, get a passport, get a stupid accent, have someone knock ur teeth in, and get ya ass over there.
oh, aight. I thought u were one of those kinds of Americans that's always talking about Europe and how much better Europe is than America and how America should be more like European nations culturally. I personally think it's bullshit, lol. Sorry bout the misunderstanding, homie.
Right on. :-) I live 10min from downtown, I should know. Not that it's perfect, as the below poster has noted, but as cities go... it's pretty darn nice.
And we have a great museum, art museum, and civic theatre too!
Ha, If it wasn't no York Creek Apts, then Comstock Park would still be a nice lil burbs cause I used to live at York Creek and it was like the projects with full of ghetto college kids.
I found a clip of a Grand Rapids area drive in theater covered in graffiti. Check out: snack bar graffiti at the plainfield

Cool! Love the old stuff and the architectural models of future development.
We make films about this kind of stuff! See our page for a short video profile of a guy living in downtown Grand Rapids.
