I simply love your playing. The criticisms absolutely crack me up. What idiots! lifaproenca was my favorite post! Hysterical. Nice of him to try to help you out! LOL
My band just started playing this tune, so I jumped on youtube to learn the song and stumbled on this video. Man, I WISH I could make it sound and feel like you do! Steller! Keep up your posts! I'm becoming a big fan!
I must say, lifaproencas comment made my brain hurt. I take all comments seriously. But dammit it's hard to help people who are that lost. Anyway... As for the song. My advice is to learn the originial. Then make it your own. Ziggaboo breaks up the hi hat part with two hands. I emulate what he did with the hats but add ghosts notes on snare. Chambers plays a straight 8th hat. Etc..get it?
This is sick. You rock it out! I enjoy/appreciate the extra fills you throw in, it gives me something to ponder, put my own interpretation on it, and turn into something my own. Thanks for the inspiration!
Thanks! I love this band . The bass player is August Zona. He is a session player that I have worked with for 12 + years. The guitarist is Justin "the kid" Richie. He is one of Floridas top slide players. The cool thing is that we didn't rehearse this song. Seriously! The bassist just called it and we just played. I'm glad the camera was rolling.
I agree, but please dont take this the wrong way. I played the way I played on this video because it is ME !!! not what people think that I should play or be. Sometimes its ok to be original and be yourself. THAT is whats nessessary! Yes, sometimes less is more, but also sometimes "less" is an excuse for not being able to play what you really want to play. Yes, Im able to play watered down crap. But I like to be me, not like the original drummer on this song or what anyone thinks I should be.ME!
@billycanty I think it should be noted that the mix is /very/ drum heavy. If you heard this drum track in its proper place in the mix, it would not appear to be as busy as it is. Great feel. Aside from Ziggaboo, the best interpretation I have heard. A lot of drummers don't get the parametric patterns on the hi-hat and snare. When it is played linearly, it loses the funk pocket that you so capture here. Great job.
I always played the hi hat part with two hands, as one of the earlier comments suggests, but i think you nail the feel with one hand, i'll have to try it! Nice job man, those suede emporers sound quite nice on the toms, nice groove and tight fills throughout. my one extremely minor complaint is that the splash seemed a bit clangy for my taste, but then everyone has different tastes. Also, where did you get the track you're playing along to? Once again though, very solid bro.
Sorry if this lets you down, but this is my band and we are playing this live just making shit up as we go. I have never practiced the song with them. The bass player called the song so we just jammed it. Im not sure where you can get a play along other than badass musicians. If you like this one, I just uploaded Look-Ka PY PY that we did last weekend. Same thing happened. The bass player just started playing it so we joined in.
Billy don't let the no talent turds bother you and please keep posting videos I love watching and learning from you. I play pearl session custom maple drums. Pearl rules.
BTW, I've read and heard from Zig's brother in law that Zig uses 2 hands on the hi-hat but I've never been able to play it that way. Of course, there are MANY things that Zig plays that I'm unable to play!
yeah zig uses 2 hand on the hihat on the first riff part in cissy strut. But i think he only uses one hand at the second riff.. Im not sure but correct my if im wrong.. sorry for my bad english
Billy, I give you props for your skills--you've got great chops--and I give you even bigger props for posting a video of you playing a Zig drum beat. Trust me, I'm a drummer and I know how hard it is to cop the same groove that Zig plays on Cissy Strut. I can play the part, mechanically speaking, but the FUNK and FEEL of this groove when I play it bears little resemblence to Zig's!
Keep on playing brother, and keep on posting these vids to YouTube and fuck all the haters out there.
hey billy. I really love that you doing it your one way! I mean. Ziggas style was great! but you are not him..and you are putting your own personalliti in to it. I like how you playing it in that feel(half shufle half strait)
are thoose heads single ply remo ambassadors? Any way i have never discorveret that pearl sounds that sweeat! I have allways been a Gretsch guy.. I own my self a Gretsch USA maple custom. Its 6 ply also!
Gretsch drums are cool but honestly, I have never played on them much. I have always played Pearl. Actually I have played Pearl for over 27 years now.
The kit is a Pearl Masters Studio Birch 6 ply kit. 8x8, 8x10, 8x12,14x14, 16x20, and a 5x14 free floating snare. This is the same kit that I am using in the 5 part Moeller video series that I just uploaded last night. Check those out! Thanks for your nice comment.
Good God! I just cant believe there are so many ass-wipes out there prepared tocritisize this playing. It is absolutely superb, no doubt. I know, I have been listening , studying and teaching drums for decades. This is tremendous talent. If you can do better, proove it. Well done mate!
No Shit!!!!!!! I thought that I might inspire players with what I do. 99% of the time I get comments about what im doing different than the originial artist did. If I cared to hear what Zig did on this song....I would put on the damn record! Everyone is completely missing the freakin point!I havent seen one negative critic have ANYTHING even half ass good on youtube. Go figure.
Billy...I just want to say how much I enjoy your playing. I'm a pro drummer in N.Y. & I always enjoy your postings. PLEASE don't get put off by all the "haters" on here...they don't get it, & it's very easy to diss someone from behind a computer screen. You're to be commended for your determination after what happened in that bar stool incident. Keep up the great work, & stay off of those "Big Wheels" !!!
one thing that i can say about this groove is that it is meant to be played linear and with a lot of feeling. try to play the hats with both hands. that is the way that zig and other cats from new orleans like stanton moore do it. get that groove jumping and you have to be dancing with it. dope!
Thanks for the tips. No offense but Zig and Stanton do it their way. My name is Billy Canty. Im from New Orleans and I do it my way. Have you seen Dennis Chambers version? Its completely not like the Meters. Its because he is Dennis.
you need to play for yourself... copy is another drummer playing, don't you.. You need to create and make your kind of drum.. But.. you play well I think.. I just tell... Study is everything.. and you are stutying.. It's one step..
I have to admit,I have no idea on earth what lifaproenca is trying to say. Really!
Before someone has the balls to give a negative comment, shouldnt they even know what the originial song sounds like?
So many people are itching so bad to shit on my playing that they end up looking like a fool. Why cant I inspire drummers to practice and try to play better? It gets frustrating at times.
Regardless of the version, I respect any artist who takes a piece of art, slice of life, whatever, and makes it his/her own. Billy you might dig some friends of mine. A band I've recorded before called DropTrio. They're a completely improvisational jazz trio consisting only of Rhodes, Drums, & Bass. They're a blast to work with. They win best jazz act in Houston every year, as well as @SXSW in Austin. They're very mid-tempo 'Funk' if that's your thing? Not 'traditional' jazz, but who cares? =)
Nice drumming. Not The Meters lick, however. The first measure of the lick has kick on the 1 only and the second measure has the kick and the 1 and the &. You may be playing the lick the way it is on this version, but it is not as funky as the original.
It's not really funk. Nallins funk is different from most other forms of funk. I think it's more like a funky rock. real funk would never have that much guitar; but it's still freakin' awsome!!! If you want real funk, try parliament. The best song = give up the funk. Sorry if I sounded like a noitall.
I've seen stanton moore give entire drum clinics on this song....you do it justice. ALmost verbatim....
One time I jammed "Sex Machine" with stanton moore (on guitar) in front of a few hundred people, and I played the chord progressions wrong the entire time. I will never forget that (bummer)
Do you know the or anyone know the sticking motion for the drum lick at like 1:02 03 time. Sounds pretty clean

just one thing, sometimes to do "less" on the drums is a lot better, try to lay down a solid groove and chill, all those hot licks are not necessary.
