@mafuuba so how far have you gotten in your japanese using ajatt? I started a couple months back but had to put it on hold cause of circumstances. but now im looking to get back into it, so im wondering how far you've progressed using ajatt.
@zeroboroz At the moment I understand pretty much 100% of all anime/TV shows/movies I watch and can read pretty much anything, even if I don't understand it all. I do struggle understanding the news, but that mainly because of specific terminology. for example "At the fukushima plant ____ exploded resulting in ____ leaking". But you pick up on words.
My listening, writing and reading skills are good, but my speaking is poor. That's mainly because I haven't had much opportunity to test it out.
@mafuuba Huh? Shouldn't the news be the easiest to understand?? The newscasters have to speak perfectly clear Japanese, they can't slur their speech, they can't shorten words, they can't talk fast......unlike if you're watching some Beat Takeshi variety show where he speaks like his pants are on fire.
@LifeFirst That's part of what AJATT is all about. You become better in the areas specify in. I was mainly watching movies/anime/tv shows/variety shows so I picked up on the more day to day speak. I probably phrased it wrong but what I meant was I do understand the newscasters, it's just that they use a lot of words I don't know. But you pick up on them the more you watch it. It really is better this since you'll be able to speak and understand true Japanese.
@mafuuba Gotcha! now I'll have to stock up on tools necessary for ajatt. don't have to worry about anki, but music and news is a problem. you know any good websites for music or that show news in japanese? I have all intention to pull a khatz on learning japanese lol
@LifeFirst true, but I'm not on the internet all the time so i need resources that aren't connected to the internet, but i do get what you mean though. as a side note i've gotten everything i needed so im good but thanks for responding!
@zeroboroz I know this comment is a month old, but here's some advice: get itunes and make an account. Then, change your location to Japan and you get access to copious amounts of free Japanese podcasts about every topic you could want. Also, heaps and heaps of free audio dramas.
Even better, pick up an ipod touch or iphone and you can have a constant flow of new listening content since you can download from anywhere within reach of wifi.
@zeroboroz Hoping to get out to Japan sometime next year so it'll improve there, Best advice is to never stop absorbing Japanese. Make it become second nature. Katz is right, literally anyone can do this. Good Luck!
To be sincere, I understood only a few words though I'm currently studying Japanese at university, but I spent the past few days surfing on the net, searching for, uhm you know, tools, websites, anything that could provide me videos and things to listen to Japanese, and I came across your website, AJATT, and I understood what was wrong with me. I was just studiyng Japanese, I wasn't living it. That's just the way to learn, but it seems I wasn't able to understand it myself.
real big!! I can see when Sam said people stair at him it's not because he's white.. it's because he's FAT!! i just imagine a japanese person walking down the street and saying HOLY FAT BASTADS BATMAN!! anyways u get what i'm saying. peace and keep fighting the good fight! and don't worry i hear u when u say u face racism. and Sam's an idiot for saying that he has faced rascism!!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Hi Katz just wanted to say i saw the blog on rascism in Japan nd i have to say... WOW!! I say WOW cuz Tokyo Sam is such an idiot for stating he has faced rascism!! i really don't think that guy has ever faced rascism in his life. U on the other hand are a visible minority and YES will always face rascism no matter where u go in the big bright WHITE world. But for that FAT LUMP Tokyo Sam to say he's faced racism is an out right crime!! the only thing i can say is SAM is BIG in JAPAN and i mean
@Stepisin start off by learning basic katakana and hiragana. then practice reading and writing japanese words. try writing a letter about something and translate it into japanese either romaji or kana. that should give you a quick boost into learning japanese. then you can go read some articles written in kana that way you can pick up words and memorize ones you've already used. also, a good japanese speaking buddy would help.
@BriCareful i'll keep using this method for sure ! thanks for that comment too because it forced me to look up 'ato de' . i rarely look stuff up as i dont wanna get stuck thinking in strict translation. but this time it helped.
This time i've noticed my understanding has gone through the roof.... :)
I think mainly because i've just started hitting tae kim's grammer guide sentences on anki. you need LOTs of input before you can get to the stage of taking in tae kims guide without setting up lots of bad habbits.
you could be in danger of loading lots of canned phrases in you head that will get stuck there.
But it has help me a lot! and this time around i really got the overall gist of what he's saying
@mowgli123456789 Yeah I haven't seen this video in a couple of months and came back and understood A LOT more than before. This method helps and is FUN!
this time i only understood a couple more words. but im taking that as what it is. a couple more words!.... as in PROGRESS!!
i also found it much easier to follow things and understand at a much faster pace. before i would keep rewinding the vid to re-check bits but now im getting what i am out of it in real time.
every time i watch this (with a gap in between) I WIN !
@BriCareful hmmm its hard to say bcuz im in high school and its hard for me to do everyday but i have rosetta stone and i use 2 onlline learning things tto and the music and only japanese TV but for like 3 months and i pick up a lot of words and phrases
Watching this video again for the second time in 6 months or so, I can see a big improvement in my Japanese. I've been following his method and I pretty much understood everything, I at least got the gist of it. 勝元殿、どうもありがとうございました!
keep up the work. I've only been doing this for around 2.5 months of immersion and 2.5 months for kanji/kana. My understanding is going as well/reading. So confident i;ll see some good results in 1 year's time.
Yeah this is actually kind of how I've been attempting to learn for the past few years I just haven't kept up very well. I understand at least 30% of what's being said.
So I think I'll keep up. Thanks Khatz for helping to rekindle my desire to speak Japanese.

sorry if this is included in one of the "All Japanese All the Time" by TkyoSam, but i haven't watched them all, so i'll just ask you: what about kanji? how do you learn that by not writing them again and again?
Take your list of Kanji/Hanzi.. paste it into google.. it should bring up a sentence..3 searches per word = 6000/9000 sentences.. the common characters will fall into place by themselves and you ensure you get a sentence with each word you studied earlier. Just a suggestion :)

Just started your system, so far very excited I can't sleep well at night because I want to study more but I know I have to take it easy with the SRSing at the start or I'll get overwhelmed later.
zomg, dubbed! There's no way some hip hop thug with headphones around his neck can speak Japanese!
Seriously though, I'm just starting this whole process (literally I only started a few days ago) and this is very inspiring to watch. When you originally moved to Japan was your Japanese at around this level, or have you improved significantly since then? And are you considered to have much of an accent?
Anyways, thanks! Now we can put you on loop instead of the news :P
This guy is a Genius. Seriously. He's good I think he speaks at least 3 languages.

@ryanvertz20 Well, he lives in Japan, and presumably uses a Japanese keyboard, but it's pretty easy even without that:
1) Google 'how type japanese windows'
2) click on pretty much any link that turns up
3) download the Microsoft global IME or whatever it's called
4) follow instructions, etc etc
In short, this--as with most questions--can be answered through the magic of Google.

For Kanji, he used James Heisig's Remebering the Kanji method.
Well not exactly, the took Heisig's method and applied to another book since he was planning to study Chinese before he took on Japanese.
Although he does recommend using Heisig's book if you are learning Japanese.
Also he recommends using an SRS program while studying Kanji.

I also agree with the input method and have been using to learn German before I go on to other languages.

zomg, dubbed!

Finally, you're such a big help. I'm done the Kanji and on to sentences (300+). I really feel your method is working!
