I heard Siouxsie Sioux referred to the Sex Pistols as cartoon punk. I really like her stuff, but I think before the Sex Pistols, punk was merely sarcastic and snarky like the Ramones, or you had to really try to listen to the lyrics. With Johnny Rotton it was the music itself. Unlike the Banshees there was no sense of experimentation, just raw angst, sturm und drang.

I was ambivalent towards the song itself, but when I heard that line being sung by Lydon I was really taken aback. It's like a mantra. A chant. A simple direct statement sung repeatedly.

While "éirí" does mean "rise," when combined with "le" (with) it is an idiom that means "be successful." It It was obviously translated by someone with a dictionary, who spoke little or no Irish.

Think about it. If the road rises under your feet, how can that mean you're going "downhill"? Figuratively, if the road is rising under you, you are going UPhill.
