@sirdicey Thats the thing though. The portion of the consumer market which actually heavily modify their cars is pretty small(less 10%). Think of the # of heavily modded cars you see VS. the TOTAL # of cars you see, pretty small fraction. There are alot of people who hotrod, but overbuilt engines cost in alot of ways, both money and performance( in case you missed it, the 2JZ is ridiculous heavy). Sacrificing the value of the car 90% will own isnt worth attracting the %10.
but! concider this, could they have over engineer'd it for the purpose of it being able to handle a ridiculas amount of power? i mean, so what if they didnt put some huge T51r.. the engine could handle it with no problems at all.. i reckon they engineered it in a way that allowed the owner more breathing space with their modifications, unlike the RB's..

I am in my third year of my Automotive Engineering degree in addition to experience building cars that have actually competed in Nationwide competitions, two placing in the top 10% of the Formula SAE series and another which has won a National challenge held by Grassroots Motorsports. I have been working on engines since I built my first motorcycle engine at 13.
@chicogotgreen If you're looking for a lightweight, high horsepower inline for circuit racing. Look into the 3RZ. The 3RZ, with the billet belt drive and proper building, can make upwards of 1500-2000hp when forced induction is used. That's a 2.7L I4. Of course, that's its maximum potential (running alcohol). The 2JZ's maximum potential, on pump gas (not race gas, methanol, or alcohol), is between the 1600-2100hp mark.
@FTORC1 I'm glad to see you know more about engines than 99% of the 2JZ fanatics I run accross. The 2JZ Midget is currently in the design phase, at this point we are refining (and supercharging amongst other things) our 1UZ Miata, but it should be ready for tunning in roughly 9 months. One thing, I can tell you have your views for a reason, but even so, bashing a wide class of cars or engines (which do have their individual merits) just promotes idiotic ricers and muscle-heads alike.
@chicogotgreen Over the years, I've learned to love the tight turning, rappy import engines. The tight tolerance, well designed, and durable nature of them make a good base for tuning. They build power quickly, and lack of fuel usage is key in endurance races.
Everyone else, needs to learn a few things from this. Experience is talking here, not some children driving mom and dads car. After consultation, we've resolved this. Just cause it's your first car, doesn't make it best.
You clearly know nothing about engines. Yes, larger cylinders make more torque. Guess what, most V8s are more than 4 litres. That means each cylinder is larger. Do some simple math.
Oh, and I dont even prefer large displacement engines. lets go with another example. The 2JZ is a show of mediocre engineering when you compare it to either the 4AGE 20V OR the F20C. Specific output?.... worse than either of those N/A engines, even with F/I.

@sirdicey Yes, in the form it was designed for (STOCK), it is pretty bad. On an engineering front, it IS mediocre. It wasn't designed for 1000 HP, or ever 400. It is insanely heavy for a 320 HP engine. Its specific output of the NA version is 73 HP/L, even the GTE is only 103 HP/L with FI. The F20C is 109 HP/L, the 4AG: 103 HP/L, both NA. And Turbocharged? The 96 Evo made 135HP/L. It is badass for hotroding, but thats BECAUSE it was over-designed from the factory. Inefficient engineering.
@sirdicey Thinking about it, I always get this reaction, so let me put it in simpler term. If toyota had put a big ass turbo on the engine (from the factory) and boosted it to 450 or 500 horsepower, it would have been a very well engineered engine. But they didn't. That wasn't how the engine was used, and so it was massively over engineered for it's application. If you look at design goal, the ability of an engine to be hot-rodded really has nearly nothing to do with how well it is designed.

What I'm saying even if have an engine that produces a shitload of power, it can still be beaten by a less powerful engine if the vehicle it's in has a better power to weight ratio. And LS doesn't have THAT much more power then a Supra. Punch up some more psi, some bigger injectors and a tune and you're already gone towards more power. However, an engine is only as good as it's maintence and how it's used.

Ariel Atom only produces about 300hp, but the thing's p/w ratio is about 1000bhp, so it's a quick ass little car. But still, power isn't always everything. I've watched races where cars with half the power of their opponent won because they had a better handling set up.
@c3h9e4v7y I actually own both engines in two cars and I will say the 2JZ has been much more reliable. Supra makes about 650 on e85 and the only thing that's ever gone is the turbo, even at 130k miles It's just an all out tank. You constantly see LS powered car having problems, on the boards. Yes, the LS motors can make more, yet you still never see supras go down in almost any races. Only chance you have against them is in a dig before they spool. Proof is in the pudding.

Not to mention, they require race gas, methanol, or alcohol by that point to get it. The 2JZ-GTE does it, on pump gas. Also, the Iron block, american dinosaurs are pretty much topped out by that point. That little 3.0L I6, has had no trouble hitting the 1500-1600 mark... On premium pump gas.

No other auto maker, makes an inline 6 with that kind of potential power. They're easily tuned, can withstand loads of power, very forgiving, and tend to launch like a rocket. Lets not forget, their ability to hook. Which is key at the strip. They're not much of a circuit engine, but a drag engine due to hitting peak RPM quickly.

What I'm saying even if have an engine that produces a shitload of power, it can still be beaten by a less powerful engine if the vehicle it's in has a better power to weight ratio. And LS doesn't have THAT much more power then a Supra. Punch up some more psi, some bigger injectors and a tune and you're already gone towards more power. However, an engine is only as good as it's maintence and how it's used.

Ariel Atom only produces about 300hp, but the thing's p/w ratio is about 1000bhp, so it's a quick ass little car. But still, power isn't always everything. I've watched races where cars with half the power of their opponent won because they had a better handling set up.

@c3h9e4v7y I actually own both engines in two cars and I will say the 2JZ has been much more reliable. Supra makes about 650 on e85 and the only thing that's ever gone is the turbo, even at 130k miles It's just an all out tank. You constantly see LS powered car having problems, on the boards. Yes, the LS motors can make more, yet you still never see supras go down in almost any races. Only chance you have against them is in a dig before they spool. Proof is in the pudding.

@chicogotgreen The Iron block V8's are also sloppy, fuel hungry dinosaurs, that need WAAAY more work to hit 1,000hp. Not to mention, they require race gas, methanol, or alcohol by that point to get it. The 2JZ-GTE does it, on pump gas. Also, the Iron block, american dinosaurs are pretty much topped out by that point. That little 3.0L I6, has had no trouble hitting the 1500-1600 mark... On premium pump gas.

The heads on the 4v mustangs (made at the time the 2J was designed) outflow it, the stock rods are just as strong, the crank and block arent issues till over the 1500 mark, AND it has more displacement. Where is the mythical "advantage" that blows everyones mind for the 2J?

@chicogotgreen Besides that, an inline engine will stomp your iron anchor every time. Torque is what wins races, jack off, not horsepower. Higher torque is a by-product of higher horsepower. Inline engines, have a naturally higher level of torque. One could easily build a 2JZ to run methanol, on nitrous, and top out well over the 2K hp mark. Which, if you have any sense of math, is well over 1500lb/ft of torque. It's time you stopped blowing your tailpipe.

The long stroke, combined with sloppy tolerances and poor design, makes for a very sluggish engine. The 2RZ, 3RZ, 5MG, 7MG, 1JZ, and 2JZ have nice tight tolerances and short strokes. What does that mean, kid? I'll tell you. A fast revving, high strung, quick to launch engine. Higher max RPM, plus quicker to hit peak RPM... Keep your sloppy V8.

I dont dislike the 2JZ, Infact I just swayed my autox team to use it for the new car we are designing(2JZ powered MG midget ;) ). I just don't quite understand the massive fandom around the engine.

No other auto maker, makes an inline 6 with that kind of potential power. They're easily tuned, can withstand loads of power, very forgiving, and tend to launch like a rocket. Lets not forget, their ability to hook. Which is key at the strip. They're not much of a circuit engine, but a drag engine due to hitting peak RPM quickly.
