sounds like the camshafts need to be replaced. I bought a car like this with this same problem for 350. I bought an engine and replaced it with 60,000 miles on it. mechanic is still working on swapping it. Ill upload a video response when I get it running.
I have a 1990 nissan maxima. it has over 270 k miles. the exhaust is quieter than this car. it does have some engine sludge but i have not noticed any problems with the performance of the vehicle. Some say "this car sux," or "it's a pos" or "the only good thing about it is that it runs forever on little maintenance," well it got me through six years of schooling and it's in basically the same condition now as when i bought it. plus, i live in the state of maine. that's hard to talk down.

also i need a radio , i dont have a sunroof and wing... its just the standard 4dsc 1990..when i hit the power/comfort switch , i dont feel the difference between the two ( i really dont know any thing about it though) AND THE INTERIOR IS BLACK SO ITS BLAZIN WHEN THE SUN IS OUT SUMMER OR WINTER LOL! but its a good car....SHOULD I PUT THE MONEY INTO IT AND GET A STEREO AND PAINTING AND PUTTING JUST BASIC RIMS AND HEAD/FOG LIGHTS ON IT? MY DAD WAS LIKE IT WASNT WORTH ? BUT I LUV IT.BAD ON GAS THO
I owned the 92 MAXIMA SE manual. The noise is a well known problem its the vtc's that are clacking like that, its the number one problem with the VE30DE engine. my car was in much better shape than this I sold it for a 1.1K
everyone keeps saying "valve problem, valve problem", well its not a valve problem, its the vtc's that are clacking like that, its the number one problem with the VE30DE engine, my car sounds exactly the same....and its annoying as hell
yea i just got a nissan maxima just like that except less miles and it is it alot better condition and the guy that used to have it dumped 715 dollars into it and sold it to me for 250 about what the tires cost a piece it was 1500 below kbb price
