  • just want to say thanks for the video. I started pickin mandolin just about 2yrs ago was having a really difficult time grasping "trip-el-ets". You're video was spot on.... Sounding it out "trip-el-et" and the graph you made REALLY put it in to a perspective I could understand. Thanks again and now i'm off to work on Bluegrass Stomp. I pulled it up yesterday since it was the anniversary of BM recording it. Yesterday i couldn't even get the melody to sound right..now it's spont on! Thanks again!

  • keep dippin and keep pickin brother. im right there with you!

  • Banjoben, do you know that song "Your mommas not dead she's just a playin opposum"?

  • Hold up, Hold up, Hold up! Banjoben, I just thought of a snag. If'n I learn to play the mandolin with my feet, how would I ever be able to dance with all the pretty girls?

  • Hey Banjoben, I once saw a man, with no arms, playing the guitar with his feet. Reckon I can learn to do that on the mandolin Banjoben? Now wouldn't that be a hoot banjoben?

  • do you push off your pull offs on strings 2,3,&4? kind of looks like it. I am trying to get some more volume on my pull offs and I have been told to try pushing. Thanks for the great videos by the way.

  • I know with all your popularity now you probably dont check your comments, but you've been a huge help to me, and i mean that from the bottom of my heart. I dont have any musicians in the family, and its good to have somebody to look that will instruct you. You've been instrumental (no pun intended) in my progress on the mandolin and guitar. Thanks brother.

  • @IBG67 I ALWAYS check my comments :) I don't have time to answer all my messages, but I LOVE to read them. Thank you so much for your kind words, and please keep in touch. Folks like you are the whole reason I started doing this, and when I hear that these silly videos have actually helped someone, it makes it all worth it. You're welcome, brother.

  • helpful stuff.....thanks for the lessons

  • Is that a citadel ring?

  • great mandolin player, and the dip spit is the best part!

  • This clearly one of the best done mandolin how to videos I seen EVER -- you have a talent for breaking it down -- and it does not hurt that you are a MIGHTY good picker. Thanks for taking the time. BTW glad you gave up the chew! As Bill Monroe would say "back in the days of my "childhood" ... well I didn't listen to foxhounds -- but I did do research on cheek, tounge and lip cancer oftimes brought on by chewing the old 'bacca. I hope you can shake it -- we need good pickers like you! (<:

  • Wow,,,this is NOT like I am used to...I have played mandolin for years, rhythm only as I was in a very talented bluegrass band and the real musicians played all the leads,,I sang,,,finally after all these years I "get it" and your video brought it all together for me,,,un freekin reel...Thanks,,,I cant wait to get home from work and play now...

  • what chew?

  • Well, it USED to be Timberwolf. But, I've actually just quit after 15 years...and it's HARD!!!

  • @BanjoBen1 -Hey Banjo- You're a great guy, and we want you to be around. If that's tobacco you're chewing please stop. I've known quite a few people who've gotten some of the most awful, painful forms of cancer. Sorry to be a pain.

  • @cooks95 I'm quitting! I know how bad it is! Thanks :)

  • Thanks Banjo Ben! I don't understand why people care about the spitting. This is a FREE lesson!!! I pay $40 a lesson for private music instruction--and there's only one teacher available in my city and he's not even good and my lessons aren't spoon fed like this. I have to figure a lot out on my own. So thanks again. Great job and keep spitting.

  • Thanks for slowing it down. We appreciate it!

  • quit chewin' on screen puhleeze!!

  • Thanks.... I am gunna try this!!!

  • You know.... I thought all of the fuzzy pink bubbled, bed wetting snivelers came from my part of the country. Northern California is chuck full of the goddess worshiping, latte sippin', "Oh don't spit in a cup", Nancies. Ladies, B_Ben is offering you a gift. A gift of life and self expression. Accept it graciously, or move on. Bring the cup back!!!

  • Amen to that. And I ain't had so much fun since the hogs ate my sister. All Nancies must die!

  • sure is alot of casting stones, reckin some people just dont have any faults at all, keep up the vids, the chew doesnt bother me at all, heck,im getting one myself,peace-out

  • My sister dates a guy spits into cups. Wonderful mandolin artistry--but somebody should have told you it's just impolite or maybe disgusting to feature it in the video.

I'm sure you think it kind of makes you gritty and real. Whatever.

  • C'mon, y'all. As you might have noticed, as my vids have gotten more popular I've held back on the tobacco. When I first started making these, they were for my friends and students...who all know I like to chaw on some every now and then. I had no idea I would have 750,000 views....700,000 of them coming from my second mothers all over the world :) I'm still not convinced this isn't my mom starting all these youtube accounts and harassing me!!! It's a deal...no more tobacco in the vids to come.

  • Dude.........you know I respect the heck outa ya........quit with the spit and the chew dude.....

    it's gross!!

  • that was awesome !! thanks

  • great video! 5*

  • Thanks. Your explanation and demonstration are very helpful. Thanks. I like your humor, too.

  • Those Boston boys probably don't understand why we (Texans) where pointed boots either... chew and concentrate away!

  • Those Texas boys probably don't understand why we (northeasterners) value education either...there's a difference between "where" and "wear"!

  • Now now....everybody calm down. I love a good ol' beanbag toss across the Mason-Dixon Line as much as anybody else, but this "hear" ain't the place!!! Ha!

  • amen

  • Now the English dialect is something you have to leave alone. Usage is grammar. Southern dialects are a precious American treasure, and utterly important to this musical style. I'm sorry to say I've caught myself using the term "fixin'" when introducing a song--and I'm from NE Iowa. We all talk like television weathermen up there. Sorry, but I'm a poseur.

Again, chewing tobacco in this video ruins it.

  • Nice info. Thanks Ben.

p.s. - Spitting is gross. lol.

  • It's a Southern thing, you wouldn't understand.

  • I grew up on a ranch in Texas, can ride, rope and the whole 9 yards. I doubt you could say the same.

  • Scratching your balls is a Southern thing, too. Just don't do it in an instructional video. Whatever membership in some kind of fraternity you think this represents--it's really just repulsive.

  • I've enjoyed the videos so far, your a very good musician, and teacher. Thanks for the help. jarred

  • Thanks Ben but what's up with spitting in the cup? That's frickin' gross.

  • Point taken :) I need to be more courteous. Folks probably think that I constantly have a dip in my mouth. Not true....I just happen to always have one in my mouth when making my videos...it helps with my concentration :) Thanks for watching!

  • Perfect explanation BanjoBen, Thanks for posting this, gonna take me a while to get that up to speed but I'll get it. What a beautiful and toneful mandolin!! *Looks at his Michael Kelly mando in disgust* Looking forward to more Flatpicking licks as well, my Martin will be here tomorrow!!
