Amazing to see such casual smoking on television. So 1970s! (Glad that habit died out). Really interesting to hear Malcolm McDowell praising Kubrick. I did not know he was so flexible as a director.

In my defense, back in the "old days* there was not a lot of prerelease hype on movies, just a few reviews to go on, and I knew it would be a great movie. I never knew about the rape scenes until we were there and by then, to tell you the truth, my date could have left and I was so enthralled by this movie I probably would not have noticed. The movie was disturbing and hit you viscerally, and was unlike anything I had seen before.
@frickadele McDowell is still saying in a more recent YouTube interview (2008 or so) that Kubrick was great to work with. Why would he continue to say that after the man's death?
I took a girl for our first date to see clockwork upon it's release. There was no second date. I fell infatuated with the movie which was totally different and new, and made me a Kubrick fan forever.
Pretty slick how Malcolm McDowell seized the opportunity to promote himself when asked about Kubrick. He basically relates to the audience that it was HIS idea for the singing in the rain scene. How true that is is anybody's guess. Pretty slick indeed.
@Rachulie No problem at all. But seeing as all of these guys are taken, well, it would have been great if I'd been around before they found their wives.
@BooDotBoo You're welcome! I just recently discovered him myself and now I can't get enough of him. If they are ever to make a remake of a clockwork orange (which they shouldn't do) he would be perfect.

I know Alex is a really evil guy, but at certain times in the film and even here in this interview, I think Malcolm looks like a really friendly, kindhearted guy. Some actors actually look evil in their expressions in films, and Malcolm did, but there was times when he just looked the complete opposite.
@Buttons4me2010 That was intentionaly done by Kubrick. He's questioning (amongst many other things) the true root of evil. Is Alex really evil or is he just a victim of his cirumstance. There are many obvious hints in the film to Alex having been sexually abused. I think Kubrick want to make you sympathise with Alex and realise that he too is just another human being.

The individual does their version of violence, and the government does ITS version of violence. Individuals are curious, and out for a thrill--governments are collective killing machines that hate few things more intensely than they hate people who think and act on their own.
Irony: writers' wives are some of the most neglected, deprived and frustrated women on earth. A lot of subliminal messages in this film. Several women have commented to me that, "Mrs. Alexander was basically PRAYING for some good hard sex from SOMEBODY--ANYBODY."

Malcolm being the typical pompous ass most actors are lied about improvising the "Singing In The Rain" rape scene. The dirty little rotter was shown a 16mm film clip of a couple of children acting out that perversion of the original number and Kubrick then told him "I want you to do the scene just like that". It's wonder why Kubrick parted company with this jerk and never looked back.
