Is it just bad audio, or are they out of tune? (esp. on some double stops and low notes)

I think its more just the nature of the instrument. There are no "exact" fingerings, so it can cause an incredibly slight variation in pitch between players, even if they are in tune before. Some notice that "off" quality more than others, and admittedly, it takes some getting used to. But it's certainly part of what makes a cello mourn so well.
