This is punk rock by and for adults, with complicated instrumental parts, realistic lyrics evolved past teenage idealism and an incredibly strong emotional attachment the artist and his art. This is what "emo" was supposed to be like, you sissies!
People have left comments to the effect that they weren't an intense live band, or at least not compared to MT and Fugazi. I think that's a hard comparison to make b/c it was a vastly different vibe. I think this was a great project for after MT. And I think they were very intense, but it was an emotional and cerebral intensity rather than just physicality. It's a very personal record, obviously. I like to know there was a young Ian McKaye in his early-mid 20s thinking these thoughts.
Ian MacKaye is the greatest figure involved in punk rock. Never compromised, never put out a shitty record, never apologized. Hero is a strong word, but if there ever was one...
The Embrace record is such a great album, this is evidence that they had trouble pulling it off live, though... I love it, but it lacks the punch of the bands and projects before and after.
Try "End Of A Year". Taking their name from an Embrace song, the band's original sound was highly influenced by the Revolution Summer-era DC bands. Not too bad band. If you like Embrace maybe you will like them either.
The Embrace album was/is amazing. Sad this band was so short-lived, but its demise along with the end of Rites of Spring did leave room for the phenomenal Fugazi to get together. Revolution Summer has its place in the annals of underground history, no doubt.
Ian MacKaye has more energy than the whole modern music scene has

dudesons441 4 years ago
Well, Fugazi obviously. Though they are on permanent hiatus now. Ian plays in a duo with his girlfriend(?) called, "The Evens."
bitznbytz 4 years ago 2
well, he has a kid now with that girlfriend, so i guess it's pretty serious haha.
i still pray everyday to the gods of rock for fugazi to start playing again. Fuck what a great band.
