Windows Live Sync does the exact same thing except there is no storage limit. The limit is up to 10 GB per syncronized folder. It's also cross-platform for mac and PC.

I use dropbox primarily for school to keep my files between my MacBook and Ubuntu PC synced. The shared folder are sooo useful for collaborating on homework. Our school has an mixed environment of Macs, Windows and Ubuntu laptops for about almost every student, and Dropbox comes in very handy :D
