Now this is a game that needs to be ported to the PS3, XBOX360 and Wii, it's very inovative and has original and interesting ideas, if not a port to the new consoles it deserves a sequel
I bought this game sunday, and I'm about to start chapter eight, so I haven't finished it yet. But, I LOVE this game, it is so AWESOME! It's my first horror survival game, though in all honesty, I'd call it a zombie apocalypse more then I would call it a horror. It just doesn't scare me. I have to ask though, whats this about a 5th ancient? Where'd you find this out?
@fallensadangel Great! :) Throughout the game, the ancients tend to be represented through colour (red, blue, green being the most noticeable of course). Purple is acquired during the game as well, but from time to time you will also see yellow (most of the time through magic spells) Technically there is no 5th ancient IN the game as it was pulled out at the last minute by creators, however the yellow was left in as a sort of easter egg hinting at a 5th, and supposedly opposes Mantorok (Purple)
@Mesmic Ah, I get it now. Thanks for the heads up. Opposite of Mantorok huh? If I remember right, Mantorok is a corpse god and supposedly all things chaotic. So the forgotten god(dess?) would be a life god and all things peaceful?
A little correction with the description at the beginning. This game was co-developed by Silicon Knights and Nintendo. Satoru Iwata and Shigeru Miyamoto took part in the development of the game.
Anyways, since they have announced a sequel to Luigi's Mansion, then there's hope that Nintendo might make a new Eternal Darkness for the Wii U. I think this one didn't sell well because of the popularity of the gamecube and because this type of game wasn't that popular. Now it is (Dark Souls, Skyrim).
Oh no! So after the fireman, she was the last one? I can't believe i was almost finishing this game. But i will have to start over cause i haven't play this game in more than 4 years, maybe more. And like you, this is one of my favorite games of all time and to be honest, this was the first game that scared the hell out of me, and i like that. So for thos who like scary games like this, i suggest you get it ASAP.
@TheLegendaryJames Conker's Bad Fur Day was not published by Nintendo, it was published by RARE, Perfect Dark came out on the 64 and not the Gamecube and was duel published, while Eternal Darkness was published solely by Nintendo. This IS one of my favourite games, I wouldn't fuck up my facts that badly.
@Mesmic Somehow I knew I would get this argument but that is okay. According to ESRB Conker's Bad Fur is published by Nintendo, but sites like IGN, Gamespot and MobyGames all say it's published by Rare. I went to the Nintendo official website and there is "Classic Games List" were you can see all games licensed by companies and Perfect Dark and Conker's Bad Fur Day were both under Nintendo. It is arguable but I guess it doesn't matter all that much considering both companies kick ass.
@TheLegendaryJames You have to understand the difference between publishing and licensing. All (legit) games that come out on Nintendo platforms are licensed by Nintendo, that's a given. The game doesn't have to be developed or published by Nintendo to be licensed. Publishers market and put money into the development of the game, including paying for the license.
@Mesmic Well that's a bit screwed up, because according to Nintendo ex: Battletoads was licensed by Tradewest. I'll even send you a link if you don't believe me.
@TheLegendaryJames Eh don't worry about it. The whole thing is easy to get mixed up with. Don't wanna get into a further argument, so let's just say that Eternal Darkness kicks ass, whoever published/developed/licensed it.
Just wondering. Does the sanity meter only appear while using the sanity god's artifact? And at 3:07, do you mean that if you choose the blue or red artifact, you'll never encounter a sanity effect in this game?
@looney1023 No, if you choose, say, the red artifact, magic and decrease in sanity still affect you so you're not immune to them by picking red, by picking red you would take more enemy damage than normal.
I remember playing this game late at night. Sleep deprived and exhausted from the game messing with you. I haven't saved in all long time and worried bout losing a lot of progress. Went to save and all of a sudden it said deleting. Completely shocked and pissed off from my mistake. Then all of a sudden I realized it was just a hallucination. got so mad about that I rage quit. to my demise i forgot to save it from my rage quit. Oh ED I love you and hate you at the same time,
Good review, I take it you are a fan of survival horror games. That game reminds me of another great one that messes with your head, ever heard of The Call of Cthulhu The Dark Corners of the Earth? Its based on an H.P. Lovecraft story, then again Eternal Darkness seemed very Lovecraftian itself. If i get a chance I just might look into this game.
This game is one , or the scarriest game i ever played , indeed it freaks me out , i was playing and like you , i got a blue screen of dead , i litterally was in panic , i thought oh no , my gamecube is fucked
@bigfoxxiii You can buy a lot of new or used copies of the game on Amazon. New copies come in at around the 70$ mark, so I'd go for a used disc in good condition, that's only around 15$ and up :)
Man, this game was where it was at, after seeing this I'm going to replay it. Whenever I had the living room TV to myself in High School I would hook up my awesome speakers and play in the dark. For some reason, it freaked me out, fearing that something would crash through the sliding glass door, since all I could see out there was pitch black darkness. Even if some of the sanity effects now are obvious/memorized now, I'm sure there's gonna be some things that'll freak me out on a replay.
I remember my dad playing this game before me. His sanity was real low and then a screen saying all his saves were lost. I remember then a lot of swearing...
.............why!!......WHYYYYYYY!!.....i had...it bury this...this...THING!......in the dark corners of my mind....to keep them away...DON<T YOU UNDERSTAND!...oh no they....are..here....any minute they will slaughter us!...any second....any moment....NOOOOOOOOOOOW!!!!
really really good review! Detailed and i like the history u gave at the start ^_^. I'm ordering this game off amazon as soon as my exams are done coz ive decided to go all retro to my gamecube and u've convinced me ;D. [again another sign youre good at doing reviews ^_^]
eternal darkness somehow change my life with the dialogues it have, the history its very intersting and the gameplay good as hell, and the phrase... I WAS ONCE A FOOL stay sound in my head. :D. one of the best game in gamecube system and in all history perhaps
"Why? Because it fucks your mind up!" Hehehe, loved that. A good review. I've wanted to play through this for a while now and really enjoyed the video. A little heavy on the info (not spoilers, just lots of details). Your enthusiasm made it all worthwhile. I'm definitely picking this up first chance I get. Thanks!
There's always the good ol' backwards compatible Wii though! As long as you didn't throw away any of your 'Cube controllers and .. ya know, have a Wii, you should be sweet.
...you think so? I didn't really think so... there's been quite a few comments from people saying they haven't played/had yet to clock the game yet and they didn't seem too concerned with spoilers. Oh well D:
i had a feeling the choice at the start affected it, but i didn't think it would the mechanics. I glad i picked Xel'lotath then =D. Insanity is fun 8D. I've just killed Xel'lotath's guardian. I really like the spell system, and the aiming system (altough, aiming at the thing you want to something gets a but tricky). What's annoyed me the most though, is that it could've done with a quick item thing like with the spells, and with an auto-save, but you get use'd to manually saving often.
Personally I like when horror games have no autosave function. I think it adds something to it ... if you die, there ain't no checkpoint, so it makes you stay on your guard, and adds a bit of panic too :3 Xel'lotath's path is definitely the most fun.
i spose, i kinda think it breaks the flow of it somewhat by having to save or if you die having to repeat that much. A few times i've had to redo entire chapters cause i didn't save : /
but yea, when the game told me it'd conclude in a sequel after Karim's chapter i nearly shat myself :O
Playing this game in SURROUND SOUND is the ultimate experience. I bought this back in 2002 for the gamecube and I only beat it twice! Now it's 2009 and I'm going to finally beat it for the 3rd time and FINALLY understand the STORY! It's crazy how they talk about the planets aligning....this game was definitely on that 2012 shit!!
Well, the 'corpses' you fight ... for the most part, they are fairly easy to bypass/kill, like zombies in Resident Evil. Bonethieves and Horrors work as Resident Evil's Hunters and Lickers - they're much stronger enemies but don't show up as often as the 'corpses'. However, some of 'em can affect you, like draining your sanity, or exploding all over you, so you're pretty much never 100% safe. :D
The game was just about the best game I could find! Unfortunately, I was about 5 when I had it, and whenever someone started playing it, I would run out of the room like I was being chased by a zombie. Your review for it was great too! And thanks sooo much for not showing the bathtub scene... I hated it! Scared the shit out of me!
Lmao! All great horror games make your brain scream "RUN AWAAAY" when you're a kid. Tryst me, I was the same with RE and Silent Hill :P thanks very much for your comment! The bathtub scene in writing is so cliche, but once you experience it, you're hardcore if you don't wee your pants.
i loved the one were you head pops off and you cant get out enless you pick it up i loved the diffrent effects some times i would just lower my characters sanity then i would just enter and exit a room one time when i did that i entered the room and the Whole room was filled with red zombies and another time a bunch of mini zombies and mini horrors were casing me around its kinda hard not to laugh when a mini zombie bites your ankle xD
And if you checked that everything was clear under your bed after playing ED for the 1st time, then I'd like to know how you managed to have a bath afterwards :p.
Don't worry, it had the same effects on me, except I was too clutched to my pillow to dare gazing under my bed.
The bluescreen is pretty rare. To be honest, I just sat up one night, made sure my sanity meter was at zero and just walked around for aaages. Then I eventually got it. And even though I was actively looking for it, it STILL freaked me out when I got it lmao.
You have to understand that it's hard to wing an 8 minute review of a game off the top of your head. It's an amateur review, so obviously I haven't had a voice casting for this. It's just me, my opinions and a microphone. I tried to make it entertaining enough so a petty thing like how my voice sounds wouldn't be a big deal. :/ It's not a criticism that I can work on afterall. Thanks for the compliment an comment.
Great review of one of my favorite games. I just started playing it again today after having not touched it for years. Got the blue screen, which I'd never gotten before. It managed to extract an lol from me.
My personal favorite has to be the controller being unplugged though. When I got that one the first time, I bolted off my couch over to the system to try to plug it back in, only to have the screen flash at me. I felt more than a bit embarrassed.
I like the comment about wanting to insert the bathtub scene at the end. I think I saw the scene three times and it scared the hell out of me each time. It was also fun watching friends play for the first time just to see them jump at that scene. This game was the perfect blend of game play, story and atmosphere. I've never had a gaming experience like it before or since.
@ncspacemonkey try doing the bathtub scene when your an innocent 9 year old having a go at your mommy's scary game.. yes, I did it and I fucking SCREAMED and threw the controler at the tv before running behind my mother and crying to her. She laughed at me >> Typical gamer-mom XD
I never finished the game. I was about 2/3 though the game and my stupid 3rd party memory card corrupted. I lost all my save files to everything. I cried...a lot. I think i might go a pick it up and play it on my friends Wii. Here is to hopping that Silicon Knights make a sequel.
Lmao - totally. This game needed more publicity. I honestly want every horror game fan to play this. It makes me sad that it's for a platform that games aren't circulated around for anymore.
To me, Eternal Darkness has got to be one of the most underrated games of all time.
It has a lot of awesome features, the most notable being the sanity level thing, that was extremely well thought. I wonder why no one has tried to copy this style of gameplay features, just imagine all the things they could put in the game with todays consoles.
I just hope that if they actually do notice this, they will not put any screamers in the game because i really hate those things XD lol@5:16
The reason other games haven't used the insanity thing is because Nintendo patented the function. I guess the idea was so unique that Nintedo wanted to bar the use from other developers. Which is a shame. A HUGE shame. Because we haven't seen from it since.
man i almost stomped my gamecube when it was playin to delete my game. that busted down the damn wall when putting the player in the characters place. DAMN I HATED THAT! but yet, somehow i love the creativity. nice review. 5/5
This game pretty much fucked me up when I played it ( I was 8 so it was kinda a bad choice on my parents part) I rember once that the game would not turn off so I freaked out and threw my gamecube....
Thank you :) It was released on November 2002 in Europe, which is where I am so that's why I said that. I thiiink it was released in the USA 5 months before that.
This is one of my favourite games of all time. Love your accent!!

***SPOILER***
OMG the bathtub scene scared the shit out of me! Anyway, I loved this game. It's a shame it flew under the radar.

i loved the one were you head pops off and you cant get out enless you pick it up i loved the diffrent effects some times i would just lower my characters sanity then i would just enter and exit a room one time when i did that i entered the room and the Whole room was filled with red zombies and another time a bunch of mini zombies and mini horrors were casing me around its kinda hard not to laugh when a mini zombie bites your ankle xD

Thanks for the review. I've never played this game and was just curious as I heard it being talked about.

VEry Nice review indeed.
The only problem seems to come from your mike.
And if you checked that everything was clear under your bed after playing ED for the 1st time, then I'd like to know how you managed to have a bath afterwards :p.
Don't worry, it had the same effects on me, except I was too clutched to my pillow to dare gazing under my bed.

Yeah, I knooow, but I have since gotten a better one :)
Oh, trust me, I tended to shower a lot more after playing it. It really freaked me out. *sigh* awesome days...

lol Blue Screen and Metal gear Solid...never got that =(
but the others scared me a lot, when the volume adjusts itself etc...that was so weird =)
fer0x666 2 years ago
The bluescreen is pretty rare. To be honest, I just sat up one night, made sure my sanity meter was at zero and just walked around for aaages. Then I eventually got it. And even though I was actively looking for it, it STILL freaked me out when I got it lmao.

were you reading from a script the whole time? Good review and funny remarks, but your voice bugs...
buddy555 2 years ago
You have to understand that it's hard to wing an 8 minute review of a game off the top of your head. It's an amateur review, so obviously I haven't had a voice casting for this. It's just me, my opinions and a microphone. I tried to make it entertaining enough so a petty thing like how my voice sounds wouldn't be a big deal. :/ It's not a criticism that I can work on afterall. Thanks for the compliment an comment.

This game looks absolutely awesome... I might be able to hijack my gamecube back if I ever buy this.

An after thought. Say "if" they made a sequel it would be missing the sanity meter right?
liverbird0687 3 years ago
If Nintendo have nothing to do with the making of Eternal Darkness 2 - nope, it won't be there. D:
Mesmic 3 years ago
I never finished the game. I was about 2/3 though the game and my stupid 3rd party memory card corrupted. I lost all my save files to everything. I cried...a lot. I think i might go a pick it up and play it on my friends Wii. Here is to hopping that Silicon Knights make a sequel.
liverbird0687 3 years ago
You sure it wasn't an insanity effect? :P
Mesmic 3 years ago
yes it wasn't an insanity effect. I just went to play it one day and it was gone...everything was gone.
liverbird0687 3 years ago
:( what a downer. I'm sorry about that. I hope you can complete it eventually.
Mesmic 3 years ago
this game was one of my child hood games (i was young and it came free with the gamecube)
it was awesome
granted it scared the life out of me but it was so fun
the bone thieves creeped me to death and the insanity levels,
good times
so underated its depressing
someone should have done a riot or something, the game is worth it
scarletwitch101 3 years ago
Lmao - totally. This game needed more publicity. I honestly want every horror game fan to play this. It makes me sad that it's for a platform that games aren't circulated around for anymore.
Mesmic 3 years ago
to bad silcon knights can win it back and us it imagine a zombie halocaust game with the insanity bar !

Amazing game.
I just hope that if they actually do notice this, they will not put any screamers in the game because i really hate those things XD lol@5:16
wxsabi 3 years ago 14
Amen.
The reason other games haven't used the insanity thing is because Nintendo patented the function. I guess the idea was so unique that Nintedo wanted to bar the use from other developers. Which is a shame. A HUGE shame. Because we haven't seen from it since.

Gosh, I've been hoping for a long time for a sequel. Denis Dyack hinted at one. Fingers crossed! An Xbox 360 version would be fantastic!
