  • I also read the theory once (in Metzner's "The well of remembrance") that Gullveig was a priestess of the matriarchal religion (Vanir worship) that was in place in central Europe before the Indo-Europeans arrived. She was powerful and fought for the "old ways", against the invaders (who brought the Aesir with them), and that's why she is maligned in the Edda which generally favours the Aesir and Indo-European views and morals.

  • @DoJaenin Indeed, that's an interesting book. Thank you for mention it.

  • lol...Gullveig IS a Jotunn. She has nothing to do with gold and she is not a sister nor a vanir. These are common misconceptions of Gullveig. I recommend everyone reads the book Gullveigarbok.

  • @Wolfsblood6 Thanks for the recommendation, kid. I'll read it 'cause this kind of debate is part of living Heathenry. Thanks for the interest too.

  • @MelomanaVoraz sorry to burst your bubble but im not a kid :)

In all seriousness I was just recommending a book for everyone to read if they chose to that clears up a lot of things about Gullveig. Anyone who has false information deserves to read what is true I believe.

  • @Wolfsblood6 Well, I thank you again for mention Vexior's book, I've been reading it hours ago with satisfaction. Me, as Odinist and reader of Edred Thorsson's books, had that misunderstanding problem about Gullveig, even my mentors have that issue to be solved.

Anyway, the shine that comes from the icy darkness enlightened me.

  • @MelomanaVoraz Good, I am glad I could help in this. A lot of people just assume what they read in the Eddas is true but through much research and study, Vexior has shown different.

  • I think that Frejya and Gullveig are differents :S ... In my opinion Frejya is a bad copy of Gullveig that lives in Asgard because of whishes of the Aesirs xD.

  • The only connection between the two was that Gullveig was a maid to Freyja as Angrboða and tricked her into learning black magick. they are two different deities.

  • "The mythology tells how when the Æsir had established themselves, a stranger came to their halls, a woman named Gullveig. The meeting was not a cordial one and the Æsir killed the mysterious woman with their spears and burned her body. She returned once again and again they slew her with spears and burned the corpse. She returned a third time, more powerful than before...

  • ... This ill-treatment of one of their own by the Æsir led the Vanir to initiate a war between the two races of Gods, finally ending in a truce and the customary exchange of hostages. Gullveig Herself remained with the Æsir, changing Her name to Heithr. It seems likely from the mythological evidence that She was in fact Freyja, since Freyja is thereafter found among the Æsir, yet She was not one of the hostages exchanged at the conclusion of hostilities...

  • The catalytic action of Gullveig in initiating the conflict, and Her ability to Remanifest in ever more powerful form, are also characteristics of the Other, as the Initiate will discover when his own Other begins to manifest Her influence in his own life..."

BOOK: Aegishjalmur, the book of the dragon runes by Michael Kelly

He doesn't say the Scarlet woman is the same as Freyja, later, he writes this:

  • "Thus we have in Freyja a Goddess of sex, war and magic. As such, She fulfils every function of the archetype of the Scarlet Woman as discussed in Apophis. But when we are dealing with a specific tradition, it would be very wrong to say, 'Freyja is Babalon' or 'Freyja and the Scarlet Woman are the same thing'. This is quite untrue."

I find his theory very interesting, indeed a bit different from the main idea of these deities. Well, it's from another kind of magick, the Draconian one.

  • Gullveig was not a maid of Freyja, she is the sister They are Vanir (Some people think that Gullveig is a Jotun, but I disagree with them) as well, so there's no reason to believe that Gullveig was a under Frejya. Gullveig have the secret of the transmutation of gold, and Aesir burn her for that. Then, they noticed that they was trying to kill the sister of Frejya.

That's is I interpreted by reading Eddas

  • Gullveig has nothing to do with Freyja...

  • @Wolfsblood6 Share your theory then, please.
