  • I'm confused as to how he's testing the response of the headphones.

  • There are seriously cool videos to watch.

  • You didn't test any AKGs.

  • video uploaded January, the 1st....

Happy new year, Friend, he-he. :)

  • @www73171 today I managed to head a pair of Sony MDR V6's, and I got to say they are brilliant. Thank you for recommending them!

  • @www73171 I'm surprised you only tried the Grado SR60's, their cheapest set ($60 bucks...), and considered "consumer", while they have a whole "reference" and "professional" line.

And you don't need to leave the consumer line to notice the quality, I think you would be surprised by the flat response of even their SR125's ( - $150).

I know this is a bit old, but I think you should at least give them a solid chance. I'm sure they'd send you one to try, they're a very friendly company.

  • @toucansam999 Well, not against the Grado's, but I was focused on finding closed ear headphones for a live sound reference point. I just tried the open ear models as a reference. Hence the reason I did not go out of my way to acquire high level open ear models.

  • @www73171 I guess I'm confused about what you mean by live sound, and how that excludes open ear models

  • @toucansam999 Ahhh, live sound meaning 'mixing sound for live concerts'.

Typically there is significant volume from the band performing so open ear headphones do not work well. Also, noise cancelling headphones are rarely able to deal with concert levels and overload. So a closed ear design that is very flat and accurate and can reproduce a wide response at high levels tends to be the way to go.

  • You've got to be so RICH! By the way, the headphones which you don't like, "Can I have them ? :)"-just joking

  • @XpertCameraMan It's not rich, but rather I am fortunate to have enough industry connections that most manufacturers will loan me their products. It was really cool to be able to hear all the types and compare how different they are.

  • omg how do u get so many headphones for testing? they must cost a bunch!

  • You are a audio Genius!!

  • ULTRASONE HEADPHONES FTW !!! ... SAFEST, MOST RELIABLE, HIGH QUALITY HEADPHONES !!!

  • Dave Rat, the Equation Audio RP21 looked pretty good. Do you recommend them for Ipod music listening for all types of music? I'm bent on finding a nice closed can.

  • @KokoroBeach The RP21's were pretty flat and sounded good. I downrated them a bit due to the very hardish earpads and slightly lower quality in the construction.

  • @www73171 Thx for your reply! A week after my comment I ended up getting them! I enjoy them straight out of my onboard sound on my PC, I did have to bump the bass a tad bit to use with gaming and recess the 6800K cause I heard sibilance(probably from the onboard sound), but yes they were pretty flat. I also ended up adding some Beyer pads for better comfort since the pads like you said, were as hard as rhino skin. Very happy camper right now.

  • @www73171 Agreed with this. I replaced my RP21 earpads with the ones from my Shure SRH840.

Sounds the way it should, more comfy and isolates better now =)

  • how would u rate the Hfi 780 to denon d2000 in terms of comfort?

  • @buckamoona D2000 is way more comfortable

  • very interesting about the ulrasone's driver placement. I guess that explains their S-Logic technology which is supposed to create a 3D like sound. did you notice this while testing the headphone?

  • @4thwonder I did notice the effect of the offset drivers combined with the reflective baffle causing a more ambient sound than most headphones.

  • i know this is kind of a wide based question buut. if you had a 800 dollar spending range for all around headphones what would you pick? for music, movies, and something closed ear. and also what would be the best thing to plug into a computer usb to work as a dac and amp? thanks and i love the vids.

  • @floridabowhunter I would say the Denon D5000 as they are my favorites for home listening from the units I tested.

  • dave your the man hopefully i can meet u one day...in the industry of course...not like a weird stocker way

  • @konfadense its spelled S-T-A-L-K-E-R

  • Hey Dave, what do you think about the Denon AH-D1001 for portable use like ipods?

Great videos and thanks for putting these up on YT.

  • @ferociousfrankie I did not test them but based on the other denon products in that series, there is a good chance they would be pretty good.

  • Hi Dave, Thanks for putting this video on Youtube! I was a little skeptical about my new purchase of the Sony MDR-V6. Now, I have not doubts about it ^^

  • Great video! I orderd the sennhizer HD 25's. I can't wait.

  • You may want to check out Mighty Headphone test videos 4 and 5.

  • Hi I'm a bassist and I wanted some new headphones to replace my old Grado SR225is which were ok but not what I really wanted and they feel, look, and sound cheap. I want either the Ultrasone 780's or 680's. What do you recommend? Anything other than Ultrasone that aren't super expensive?

p.s. Do you get all your headphones for free for doing reviews?

  • I hope to get a new video up soon where I take the best contenders and test them further to weed them out further.

Some headphones I am getting as demo units from manufactures that we sell products for and some I am purchasing. So far I had to purchase the Grado, Denon and some of the Sony's. Also several I had already.

  • Hey just a question, have you tested or tried the Allen & heath xd 53's? I know they are primarily dj headphones but supposedly they can also be studio monitors? Just want to get your input. Thanks!

  • I tested the Allen and Heath XONE in the next video. Those are the headphone Allen and Heath told me would be closest to what I am seeking

  • Hi Dave, what microphone are you using? I only ask because the lower end measurement mics tend to be unreliable in the high end (say from 5k on up)

  • I am using the calibrated Klark Teknik mic that is a direct match for the Klark Teknik Analyzer. It is acurate to within less than 1 db all the way otu to 20K. Though the last two LED rows in the analyzer are not working, the remaining bands are accurate to within 1 db.

  • Sweet! :D thanks for taking the time to do this and for sharing the information, it's been quite revealing and valuable for people like myself who don't have the resources to be able to compare so many headphones in this way. So Thank You!

  • what would you say would be the best headphones you have tried?

I'm looking for headphones for gaming, I want a good balance of Treble & Bass (like most people)

but often times you can't have both, great clarity, but distortion in the bass, or vice versa.

  • Hmmmm, so far the Utrasone HFI-680's and Denon AH-D2000's are doing really well.

  • would you say the Ultrasone HFI-680's and Denon AH-D2000 headphones would be better than Sennheisers headphones? like say compared to the PC350's if you have experience with those that is.

Also when someone is trying to find headphones with good bass, what are some things to look at? I know that the lower the Frequency Response the better the Bass will be, but is there anything else to know?

    Thanks!

  • I have not heard the Sennheiser PC350's but they apear to be similar to the Senn HD380's. The PC350's gaming headsets do have a mic on them as well. Since for gaming you do not really need flat sound as much as cool and fun sound, extra low end can be a plus.

So for gaming, I bet those Senn PC350's are quite good.

I have found the specs that manufacturers list are absolutely worthless and have no relationship to how the headphones sound because they do not list a plus or minus db #.

  • cool, so for gaming the PC350's would probably be a better bet than the Ultrasone, and Denon headphones you mentioned?

  • I wonder how good the Sony MDRV600 headphones sound for games, it has pretty low frequency response, I would imagine it would be great for explosions.

  • The V600's are pretty flat but as I will cover in later video's, they do not sound especially good and have a harsh high end and lackluster lows.
