BMW has a long history of high maintenance costs and poor reliability. I've owned BMW, Audi, and Mercedes. I currently drive a 2011 Infiniti G37x coupe. The Infiniti is by far the best of all of those brands. Way more reliable and more fun to drive. Not to mention you get a lot more for your money. BMW interiors have become stale and plain.

I've owned both cars. Got rid of my G35 for a 335i. The interior in the G35 is so cheap. Everything was beginning to get scratched up. Not what I expect from a 30K+ car. The 335i albeit a bit smaller is better quality. It has more torque and it shows. Just a better car all around. Cars.com is obviously too stuck on cup holders to see the real pros and cons.
When comparing g35 vs bmw 335, my primary complaint with the Infiniti is its steering being too light, bmw's is a solid one. On the other side, bmw's shift lever is very different - has very long throws compared to g35 and in general longer than most other manual transmissions and esp. Japanese ones. It just means that you have to shift differently, i.e., shift much faster; bmw clutches also have a long throw -- so it's all designed to work well together.
I don't get why people hate on Japanese cars just because they're Japanese. Those of you who do, obviously know nothing of Japanese work ethic. Also I've felt the leather in the 3 Series and the Infiniti and as far as I can tell, they are certainly on par with each other, and I actually prefer the seat design of the Infiniti. You guys need to stop being so one sided and learn to appreciate the best of both worlds like true car enthusiasts.

@fenderboy211 drive everyday? haha my dad drives his 335i everyday and doesn't complain, its also never been in the shop. it only has 20k miles on it but the 2000 328i we used to have went in once and had 117k miles for something minuscule. And with the new pay almost nothing plan for maintenance for your bmw ( infinty) doesnt offer, bmw is a prettty good deal. not to mention it faster and better looking. when you drive one you'll change your mind... hmd!
Relax, people. The fact that comments are split so passionately between these two cars just validates my point: they are both excellent vehicles, very much on par. Each has its own strengths and weaknesses but relatively speaking, they are nearly identical. I have owned a G35 and my ex owns a G37. I now own a 335 and I would not mind having a G37. I just like the transmission in the 335 a little better. Shifting is like butter, despite (or perhaps because of) the clutch delay valve.
@dcchristopher Regarding the video, yes, the points he is making are largely unbecoming of a professional reviewer. If you want cup holders, stick to reviewing SUVs and minivans. I don't take my 335 to the QT to get a 64 oz drink. Starbucks cups fit quite nicely, thank you! :-P

Ah I almost forgot - infiniti (meaning nissan) uses the parts of MICRA in it's cars. Now you have answer to your doubts about the quality used in german cars and japan cars.
@n8neiTen8n I've had a number of german and japanese cars in my family. The most reliable ever has been a Lexus, which in 6 years did not break down a single time. Germans had to see the service pretty often though, especially Mercedes. So much for superior quality. And I have no problem with the Lexus and Infiniti leather.
As far as the recycled soy paper or whatever Infiniti uses in the interior- great move. BMW and Mercedes also use a lot of recycled garbage in their cars.

@esmochka infiniti have it on looks. but nissan are cars that do not last. part might be made good but not made to last. that is all. Lexus on the onther hand are great. last long reliable, but like bmw, mb and all luxury cars repair are pricy.

BMW's on the other hand are prone to electrical/pump problems and the parts are really really expensive to replace. Not a problem when you're under warranty but once you're out of warranty and you have to replace things like window regulators BMW is not going to use any lube when they butt rape you.
@cmanns4 bmw has an aim to new buyers not poeple who are planning on keeping their car for 20 years, that is why the change models every 2 years. to keep the new car flowing out the lot. Bmw are still better. they are pricy to begin with there for they will be pricy untill they die.

and for the record, not sure about the 4 door, but my 335 has 5 cup holders, 3 in front and 2 in back. The one in the arm rest has a switch to let cold air in for cooling your drink, as many new BMWs do. Joe Wiesenfelder is a grade A 100% top choice doucher!

@potwdt for the most part you're right. But I wouldn't confuse the robust build quality of Lexus with longevity or durability. The mechanicals of older Infinitis and even some BMWs can be just as good. I see tons of 2003-ish G35s (including ours!) and e46s regularly. It's true that Nissan has the most quality issues among the Japanese. The Infinitis are doing much better lately, in fact I think the 09+ models are right up there with Lexus. Nissan-branded cars, however, are still shoddy.

As a previous BMW owner i can tell you that the Infiniti comes nothing cheap.If your really contemplating between the $150 price difference for a base G37 and a base BMW 328i coupe your then the very cheap one. The G37 starts at $36,050 with 330 Hp standard while the basic 328i coupe starts at $36,200 with a embarrasing 230 HP engine, and not even upgrading to a 335i coupe will come close to Infiniti 330 HP engine, the 335i only produces 300 HP. BMW's are over rated, "I want Armani not target."

ALL Japanese cars are more reliable than any car, but the 335 has a free, full-service package including brakes and oil changes. and OBVIOUSLY the 335 is more expensive. it's MUCH more solid, faster with more torque(300lb.-ft.@1400rpm vs. 270@2500) and close to 0 turbo lag, near perfect 50/50 balance, better interior, safer, better looking, a smoother ride, and...hello, it's a BMW. no brainer, like this review, what you pay for is what you get
@cliburn84 I agree with you on everything but the interior. The e90 interior is decent-looking on the surface, but has much shoddy workmanship lurking underneath. Exposed seat bolts, unreinforced cutouts in the headrest leatherette, cheap floormats, fit issues with the glove box, the aforementioned brutal cupholders, etc. The G's interior is not perfect by ANY stretch (though th 09+ refresh is a nice improvement), but I believe they got the better of BMW in this area.

thedezoe unlike yourself I like all good cars - a good friend drives a SMGM3 - great car, I just find it a little single focused. He has had some box problems (solenoid) and an issue with his ABS, but I don't feel that makes it unreliable as it is a motor vehicle, and statistics state all makes have a % of failure rate/recall. The late model BM's a very nice, I would drive a 335i, but power and prestigue (AMG) is not produced by BMW - they are for the next teir down. Enjoy the status if you can!
Hmmmm - love them 318i's, they are tremendous. Tell me, why is it that the majority of Presidents travel in MERCS and not BMW's - simple, they are not in the same class. The BMW would be condidered in line with Audi and the like, with MERC being the top choice. There are always stories of bad cars, across the board, and trust me, I've driven plenty of pathetic Bm's.

This sounds like the opinion of a child who has never driven a car in his life. The 335 has a small 0-60 advantage but beyond that it performs worse in every way. The G is also a lot cheaper, and if you take the money you save by buying a G and put it into a TT kit (like the 335i unfortunately already has on a tiny engine instead of a nice big NA engine) and the G will completely blow it away. As far as luxury and reliability, the 3 is a joke next to the G. My 750Li and CLK500 can't even compete
Okay while I agree the 335i has a small advantage and overall as the best bang for the buck the G37 is the best but you went a little far. The 750Li would blow the G out of the water. But then it's to be expected, it costs ~50-60k more.
I've had the 750Li for two years now and it blows nothing out of the water. The computer system is horrible and the super-adjustable front seats are none other than super-uncomfortable terribly contorted bricks. The interior is unintuitive and boring, with no features to show for that are superior in any way to the G. Granted, the ride is smooth and perfect for long drives, and the back seats are phenomenal. But other than that the G is more comfortable, attractive, and feature packed.

@fenderboy211 drive everyday? haha my dad drives his 335i everyday and doesn't complain, its also never been in the shop. it only has 20k miles on it but the 2000 328i we used to have went in once and had 117k miles for something minuscule. And with the new pay almost nothing plan for maintenance for your bmw ( infinty) doesnt offer, bmw is a prettty good deal. not to mention it faster and better looking. when you drive one you'll change your mind... hmd!

Relax, people. The fact that comments are split so passionately between these two cars just validates my point: they are both excellent vehicles, very much on par. Each has its own strengths and weaknesses but relatively speaking, they are nearly identical. I have owned a G35 and my ex owns a G37. I now own a 335 and I would not mind having a G37. I just like the transmission in the 335 a little better. Shifting is like butter, despite (or perhaps because of) the clutch delay valve.

Ah I almost forgot - infiniti (meaning nissan) uses the parts of MICRA in it's cars. Now you have answer to your doubts about the quality used in german cars and japan cars.

@n8neiTen8n I've had a number of german and japanese cars in my family. The most reliable ever has been a Lexus, which in 6 years did not break down a single time. Germans had to see the service pretty often though, especially Mercedes. So much for superior quality. And I have no problem with the Lexus and Infiniti leather.
As far as the recycled soy paper or whatever Infiniti uses in the interior- great move. BMW and Mercedes also use a lot of recycled garbage in their cars.

BMW's on the other hand are prone to electrical/pump problems and the parts are really really expensive to replace. Not a problem when you're under warranty but once you're out of warranty and you have to replace things like window regulators BMW is not going to use any lube when they butt rape you.

@potwdt for the most part you're right. But I wouldn't confuse the robust build quality of Lexus with longevity or durability. The mechanicals of older Infinitis and even some BMWs can be just as good. I see tons of 2003-ish G35s (including ours!) and e46s regularly. It's true that Nissan has the most quality issues among the Japanese. The Infinitis are doing much better lately, in fact I think the 09+ models are right up there with Lexus. Nissan-branded cars, however, are still shoddy.

As a previous BMW owner i can tell you that the Infiniti comes nothing cheap.If your really contemplating between the $150 price difference for a base G37 and a base BMW 328i coupe your then the very cheap one. The G37 starts at $36,050 with 330 Hp standard while the basic 328i coupe starts at $36,200 with a embarrasing 230 HP engine, and not even upgrading to a 335i coupe will come close to Infiniti 330 HP engine, the 335i only produces 300 HP. BMW's are over rated, "I want Armani not target."

ALL Japanese cars are more reliable than any car, but the 335 has a free, full-service package including brakes and oil changes. and OBVIOUSLY the 335 is more expensive. it's MUCH more solid, faster with more torque(300lb.-ft.@1400rpm vs. 270@2500) and close to 0 turbo lag, near perfect 50/50 balance, better interior, safer, better looking, a smoother ride, and...hello, it's a BMW. no brainer, like this review, what you pay for is what you get

@cliburn84 I agree with you on everything but the interior. The e90 interior is decent-looking on the surface, but has much shoddy workmanship lurking underneath. Exposed seat bolts, unreinforced cutouts in the headrest leatherette, cheap floormats, fit issues with the glove box, the aforementioned brutal cupholders, etc. The G's interior is not perfect by ANY stretch (though th 09+ refresh is a nice improvement), but I believe they got the better of BMW in this area.

If you do, you will see that they also chose G37 over BMW, this time not the hord top convertible also but the coupe. thedezoe unlike yourself I like all good cars - a good friend drives a SMGM3 - great car, I just find it a little single focused. He has had some box problems (solenoid) and an issue with his ABS, but I don't feel that makes it unreliable as it is a motor vehicle, and statistics state all makes have a % of failure rate/recall. The late model BM's a very nice, I would drive a 335i, but power and prestigue (AMG) is not produced by BMW - they are for the next teir down. Enjoy the status if you can!

bmw makes great cars. benz's are loaded with horsepower and are total pieces of shit. ive owned c series and an s class, both were shit, the interior would fall apart and it would always break down. also the engine got a bad sound, i didnt even drive it crazy. also owned a bmw z3. was a great little car. audi is nice but not very much hp. i still have to give it up for infinity the japanese make an excellent combination of efficiency, reliability and exceptional stock power.

This sounds like the opinion of a child who has never driven a car in his life. The 335 has a small 0-60 advantage but beyond that it performs worse in every way. The G is also a lot cheaper, and if you take the money you save by buying a G and put it into a TT kit (like the 335i unfortunately already has on a tiny engine instead of a nice big NA engine) and the G will completely blow it away. As far as luxury and reliability, the 3 is a joke next to the G. My 750Li and CLK500 can't even compete

Okay while I agree the 335i has a small advantage and overall as the best bang for the buck the G37 is the best but you went a little far. The 750Li would blow the G out of the water. But then it's to be expected, it costs ~50-60k more.

I've had the 750Li for two years now and it blows nothing out of the water. The computer system is horrible and the super-adjustable front seats are none other than super-uncomfortable terribly contorted bricks. The interior is unintuitive and boring, with no features to show for that are superior in any way to the G. Granted, the ride is smooth and perfect for long drives, and the back seats are phenomenal. But other than that the G is more comfortable, attractive, and feature packed.
