Marisa is the true definition of a supporting actress. She was funny, memorable, and stole all the scenes she was in. If it were a dramatic performance, with plenty of crying and screaming scenes (which the other nominees were), people would take her winning seriously. But because it's comedic, they automatically think it's trash or unworthy. Also, because she was merely a "sitcom actress" at that point and the others were more "established," people don't take her seriously.

She had wonderful chemistry with Peschi, she had some great dialogue with him (especially the deer hunting story), and she frikkin' killed that scene when she was a witness. The accent didn't bother me at all, but your point is fair enough. I can see why it would be annoying to some people.

Marisa receiving the Oscar was not widely appreciated and accepted at the time or even for several years afterwards. Perhaps it was because MT is such a pretty lady or because she did not leave much of a legacy in the 1990's. Fortunately, there were some in Hollywood who recognized that she is indeed one of the truly gifted actresses of her era. This award looks like a very smart choice today.
