I was with Professor Wiseman and his team when we went out to Tantallon to try and replicate this image along with the original photographer. I wouldn;t say experts were puzzled- it came down to Pareidolia- seeing patterns in random objects (which was pretty quickly dropped as there was no light source that could create that effect), a person walking down the stairs or a "ghost". Most likely a person coming down the stairs snapped at the right moment. exagerated features casued by the grate.
The thing is, the human brain is wired to pick up human faces in things - it's just how it's programmed. It could be light, cracks, anything but we'd be able to pick out a face...
Having said that, it looks absolutely chilling and I'd love to visit the place myself.
A very effective and eerie video which is very well edited. The piano music in the background adds to the general sense of ghostly isolation and foreboding associated with the castle. The weird photo of the spectral Elizabethan figure in the ruff is startling and it's authenticity has been confirmed by at least 3 photographic experts.
I have seen this before. Maybe your avid GW addicts will have heard of the site 'Mysterious Britain & Ireland' with Ian Topham et al? I seem to remember they featured this photo. A beautiful place indeed! The North, and Border Scotland is definitely my favourite place for anamolous phenomena; Dumfries & Galloway: Langholm, Penrith,York, local places such as Ilkley (Moor) and 'Verbeia', etc etc
Youtube is getting so annoying! When will someone make a new video uploady thingy so we don't have to deal with Vevo and all these suits waving bureaucracy in our faces!!! AUUURGH!!! I love your videos by the way :) They get me so excited!
Thats not a ghost! the face is the same colour as the walls. its a fragment of wall that the light is peeping through within the the room. By chance the stones lit by the sun happen to look like a face,
@propjam2 That was my thought too. It does look remarkably like a face, but it could easily be a trick of the eye. The human brain is hardwired to see read faces, so we often see them even where there are none. It's a commonly known phenomenon.
Well, Youtube is having a bit of a blitz on audio copyright at the moment so I have had to remove and re-upload some of my old videos with new audio, Really sorry if you have seen alot of these videos before but has to be done I guess !
Very interesting, perhaps there is a more simple explanation though? Who took the photo? Can the public access that particular area of the castle? Is it possible that the person in the picture is a friend of the camera man, in a costume? Just throwing that out there.
@Hardysamnin "Who took the photo?"- I forget the chaps name, Chris Achison I believe. A tourist. // "Can the public access that particular area of the castle?". yes they can. // "Is it possible that the person in the picture is a friend of the camera man, in a costume?" no, the photographer was a straight up nice bloke as confused as any one else. He just wanted an answer.
what is the music that goes with it called? :) and i love your videos, very very interesting

The level of detail is amazing though, and its figure is human like, almost Asian in origin.
