AWESOME! Question: The bike moves from the thrust generated from gases like an aircraft or it's somehow trough chains / wheels ? (and it's with reduction).
Well since he knows how to make a jet engine, if I were him I'd have to attempt making a fuselage of a jet airplane and yeah....I'd love to make my own Jet Airplane!
While that engine is more suited to long trips in a small car, turboshaft engines are efficient. They can run on bio-diesel; hydrogen; ethanol; or just about anything.
Does John have a website, or is the construction of this bike documented on a forum? I have seen this video posted a number of times and I'd really like to know more about it!
John's working on a much bigger engine at the moment - I had the privelage of visiting him last month and it's gonna have the same power output as the Y2K bike engine!!.
What a lot of people dont realise is that Gas Turbine Engines are the most efficient form of power production in terms of locomotion. Steam was about 5%, Current Petrol and Diesels sit around 17%, Gas Turbine Engines are around 27% efficient. Meaning of the potential energy put in, 27% of it is used.
That's pretty impressive! And it doesn't take a genius to see that this an experiment and wasn't designed for realworld use (yet?) but it does take a complete fucktard to take time off from masturbating to pictures of children on MySpace to come here and tell someone who actually DID SOMETHING what this thing will do on "the track."
Good work guys! I bet it was a blast building that thing!
Shaft horsepower from a freepower turbine, chain driving the rear wheel. Single speed gearbox with a 4.8:1 ratio and ~3.8:1 sprocket ratio for an overall 18.56 :1 freepowerturbine to back wheel ratio .Freepower drive turbine rated to 32,000rpm
wow, very impressive... 200kph! congratulations it's now as fast as an almost stock cagiva mito 125... and the acceleration looks pretty lame too! poor
LOL..Perhaps a look at the bikes instruments during final test runs might give you a better appreciation of its acceleration , the video is here on Youtube under "turbine bike" , 12 second quarter mile at 200 kph terminal.
This is with a single speed gearbox and no clutch , Try that with your little 125 and see how it goes , or rather, doesn't go :-))
lol its pretty fast but i was hoping it might be faster, as soon as i saw all those commodores lined up i knew this was aussie made.. good stuff, when does it go into production mate? ;P
Turbine engines werent designed to work in the kind of air you find at this altitude, the air is thinner and more combustible and easily compressed at highger altitudes...plus turbines werent particularly desgioned for speed, but effiency. they are about a 22% efficient engine, so you put in 100Hp, you get approx 22Hp back...
a gas turbine engine works fine at sea level, its actually more efficient than at high altitude because down here the air density is higher so the compressor does not have to work as hard to supply the same volume of air as it would at high alt. meaning lower fuel consumption. they use them in tanks, boats and trains, not just aircraft.
By APU you mean, LEAF BLOWER right?

is that a turbocharger jet engine?
spshecot 3 years ago
Yes it is - quite a big one providing the gas to drive a power turbine.
nickthesafe 3 years ago
hate them, hate unpure designs. still qute impressive :p how lond it took him to build?
spshecot 3 years ago
Well, making a Jet turbine yourself probably is not that easy. You have to give him credit.
franklin4500 3 years ago 2
wtf?! that was actually pretty slow!
FindlaySucks 3 years ago
OK read the title again... the clue is 'DIY' - he made the engine himself - not bought off the shelf!. If you can do better let's see it.
nickthesafe 3 years ago
The entire engine? I apologize for my comment then. I was not aware he made the entire engine. That's actually pretty impressive.

One quick question: is that tourque going to the wheel, or just thrust from the engine?
Either way, this is great!
