  • Love this song! My husband and I actually had this song at our wedding reception for the parents dance. So appropriate.

First time I heard Marc Cohen was when "Walking in Memphis" was on the airwaves. Been hooked ever since. Also a very big fan of "True Companion" which my husband and I danced to at our wedding.

  • It is a beautiful song. Has he written songs about his other children? He has three kids, I believe

  • Bett1301 is correct - that part is about Marc's mother who he really did not know because she passed when he was 2 years old. Lovely song, wonderful sentiments. The interview I heard (with BBC's Bob Harris) tells a great story.

  • Can anyone confirm the real meaning behind this song?

  • Yes,

Marc Cohn wrote this song when his Wife was pregnant with their child.

At first, he wasn't going to share/make this song public because it was so very personal.

His Wife had a miscarriage with their first child, hence, the verse, "will you be a sad reminder of what's been lost along the way; maybe you can help me find her in the things you do and say".

    Hope this helps,

    Derek

  • I think you're mostly right about the song's meaning but as far as the "will you be a sad reminder or what's been lost along the way" - it could be taken in another way, like say a reference to his mother who passed away when Marc was young. But of course there could be any number of ways to interpret the lyrics and that was just what I assumed.
