What QueenB said...it's derived from the original Broadway play. There was something about using seran wrap as a condom, and they completely removed that from the movie (obviously); the content for the movie was apparently "cleaned" up from what was in the play (as a sidenote; Travolta and the dude who played Kinicky(sp?) played the opposite roles in the play - Travolta was Kinicky and Kinicky was Danny - always found that interesting)
