that's just the sound of the hard drive switching off to save power. It happens when there's been a while since it has been used. If you don't like it, simply go to system preferences->energy saver, and uncheck the option "put hard drives to sleep when possible". If you don't trust my word, simply get a usb external hd, and listen to the sound it makes when you unplug it.
Mine's been making this noise for about three years now. It seems to affect performance but only while making the noise. Only seems to happen after it's been running for a few hours though.
I can certainly vouch that is is NOT a normal sound. I have already been through 5 hard drives in my MacBook (1st gen) in slightly over two years, and that sound gets more and more frequent until the drive completely dies. NOT FUN, DAMMIT
my macbook makes that noise-- should i be worried? that's not a normal noise? my hard drive also clicks occassionally, sometime more often than other times. I don't know what's norma and what isn't-- help.
i had the same problem dude my HDD kept making weird noises and my hinge was wonky and wasn't flush with ma system so a sent it back to were a bought it from which was John Lewis because im form the UK and they sent it to apple and within 2 weeks they sent me a brand new one with Leopard on as well my broken one had tiger so it worked out all good.

I have this too an macbook (white). When I switch it off (not sleep) and leave it for several hours or overnight then turn it back on it disappears...eventually after a few days it comes back. I'm backing up data as I type this!
justinderoin15 and mrivera, hard drives do not make a loud thudding noise. The sound is the read arm bashing against the rest stops as it fails to land. If your hard drive makes this noise, it will die.
Clearly all drives make noises, however none make cyclic, very loud, metallic contact noises.
Who told you that? Apple? haha well it is kinda hard to tell from the video but..i but im pretty sure its just the sound of the hard drive...you had the camera right on top of the computer...but yeah...it the hard drive is messed hopefully you have it fixed by now!!!! Im Typing on my macbook right now to reply and i never here that noise unless my ear is as close as you camera is...
True, everything with a hard drive makes that noise. It is the sound of the hard disk spinning around while in use. Whenever I use my iPod, it makes that noise.
Applecare will replace the HardDisk controller FOR FREE, fixing the clicking noise, EVEN IF OUT OF WARRANTY!!

that should only happen on sleep and shutdown. but seeing as how chinese children make everything in that computer, its probably just shitty.

Man, this video is murder when you watch it on a MacBook that already has this problem.
smilystar4ever 4 years ago
hi, how is your macbook now? it's been eight months since you heard it.. did you have to fix it or is it just a sound?
sedaris24 4 years ago
It had to be replaced, the hard drive (along with many other things) was defective.
My computer had so many other problems (it was a first gen, bought basically right when they came out) that they just gave me a new one.
