@badstrref Here's the skinny on capacitors voltage. So long as the uF is the same you can get any capacitor equal to or greater than the voltage you are replacing. For example: if you can replace a 100uF 6.3c cap with a 100uF 10v cap.
That's what I thought, so I have ordered a bunch of the same uF (4.7s, 10s, 100s etc) for each necessary capacitor on the game gear, but they are all 50v versions (this was the easiest to find and cheapest). That'll be fine right bud?

@austenlangford Sorry, but I don't provide that service. You probably need to replace every capacitor in the system. I you don't want to do it, you may be able to find a local electronics repair shop that could do the work for you.
I just replaced all the caps and now the screen is vary bright but somthing is not right. I can see the game but it is a ghost image like. It is vary faint and has no color. This is a two ASIC chip model. Any help would be nice.

@Slash250688 I can't say for sure, but you probably have some bad capacitors. The best thing to do would be to open it up, write down all the info off each capacitor and buy replacement. You can replace caps with any voltage higher than the original so long as the uF is the same. For example if you had a 100uF 6volt you could replace it with a 100uF 10volt.
Thanks for the great vid! I just got a GG at a local yardsale for.......$1! with a ton of games. I can't wait to fix the screen and start playing again.
@CaptainPoovabladoo If you've cleaned your games and the Game Gear then you might want to look into replacing the capacitors. I can't say that's your problem, but it's a good place to start.
Thanks for the great vid. I replaced the caps (13 total, including the sound board), and now everything works great. All that I used to have was a scrambled mess of lines on the screen, or a very dim picture that had to be viewed at a ridiculous angle. Now I have a nice picture with great sound.
My GG has the same problem in which it can only be viewed at from a weird angle. But after about 10 minutes of playing like this the picture on it starts multiplying until its just a mess of bright colours . Would this have to do with the bad capacitors as well?
i kinda have to tilt my screen to see the game. whenever i set the dial to where i could see it without tilting i can only see a few lines. any idea on the problem?
I just bought a Game Gear and when I put a game in and turn it on, only a couple of lines of video show up and that's it. I cleaned the games, so might it be the pin connector or something else?
@dogeymon83 Sorry, I don't. But it's not hard to do it yourself. You can always use an old piece of broken junk like a busted CD player to practice soldering before trying it on your Game Gear.
I got mine apart, but it's a single ASIC chip model, marked Main USA VA5. I can't find any information on a VA5 model. It seems like no one has even heard of it.
@timerider4 As far as I know there isn't anywhere you can buy new Game Gear parts. Replacing all the capacitors in your Game Gear will probably fix any issues you have with the screen, but do remember that even when the Game Gear was brand new the screen wasn't great.
Thanks so much for posting this. Digging into an old Game Gear and replacing capacitors will be a great intro to electronics for my kids. This video is extremely helpful and I love your attitude about preserving these vintage games and the can-do attitude toward attempting a repair. (As you noted, it's broken already anyway, what's to lose?)
@kakisky Fixing electronics is a great skill to teach your kids, but if I were you I'd use Lead Free solder only for their health. Lead solder is better and the amount you'd be exposed to is tiny, but you can't be too safe with your kids.
I just bought one today. It doesn't have a problem that gets better with the viewing angle, but the screen does look washed out. Is there way to upgrade the display itself?
The rubber button contacts also feel worn out, and I can't find a place that sells parts.
@CaptainPoovabladoo I can't say for sure, but a good place to start would be replacing all the capacitors in it. At least open it up to look for signs of leaking capacitors.
higher voltage just means that the material used in the capacitor has a higher break down voltage. As long as the capacitor values are the same then the higher voltage rating is not significant.
@Deathbydiease I don't have any plans to. I don't have a one that needs fixing and I don't know of any common issues with easy fixes. Sometimes the pixels go bad on Gameboy, but other than replacement I don't know any other work around. If it's "vertical lines" then it's possible a bad component like a capacitor is causing it, but I can't say for sure.
i had 2 game gears the first fall down and the screen got broken, and the second i had a plug cord that let you change voltage and i overvoltage it and the screen died as i wa splaying,i still have sound but screen is dead :'(
I've replaced all (sound and motherboard) capacitors of my Game Gear, it worked well for some hours, but then the screen started to do strange things: vertical and horizontal stripes, and flickering. Now it works this way most of the time. I'm almost sure I had seen this problem BEFORE the capacitor fix, but just a few times.
@0Kajuna0 I watched your video. Sorry, but I've never seen anything like that before. You might want to check all your solder points to make sure none of them cracked or came loose. That's about all the advice I can give. Good luck.
this is exactly the problem I have with my gamegear. I was so sad because I have had it since I was 10. I may fix it. But I am scared of screwing up the gamegear.
Thanks for the tutorial. Also amazing game watch. I have the same one and a super mario one that has a headphone jack built in. At the time I thought it was the coolest thing ever.
@cavegoat13 capacitor problems can also cause ghost lines on the screen, rapid white moving lines, and sometimes cause it to turn itself off to me it sounds like u need to change the capacitors.
noing my luck i got a game gear and 2 freekin weeks later the capacitors pooped the bed. i thought about getting a new GG but i finally grabbed my balls and decided to follow this video. i went to mouser and got the exact ratings for each capacitor for $2. i put the caps in with no soldering experience and BOOM it works perfectly TY so much this review rly helped dude u are the bomb!!!!!
@DoctorJ1337 Glad to help. That's one more Game Gear that won't be getting sent to the land fill. We've got to keep these things around for future generations, so they can see gaming's history for themselves.
@betothreeg Sorry, but you really need to open your Game Gear and order the parts specifically. If it helps, you're looking for electrolyte capacitors. If mouser doesn't have what your looking for there are several other online electronics stores and you can even buy parts at your local radioshack or other electronics repair shops.
I'm having a large issue with my SGG screen, nothing shows up :\. Y'know how a TV will sometimes have that black and white screen? Mine is kind of like that.
I found it in my closet after a long retirement, then I decided to pull it out and toss some batteries in to play some Sonic 2. Unfortunately, I can't.
The issues with the screen are a bit problematic to explain, and I can't find anything about it on Google.
@cavegoat13 It could just be too dirty or the even the games need a cleaning. Unless you can hear the game but not see it, then I would say you have a screen problem and replacement the capacitors might help.
I already replace all the capacitors of game gear (even those from your tutorial for the soundboard) and it worked greate. but while ago my game gear start to show a white screen (very bright one), but i can hear the sound of the game.
im still playing about with the game gears, i fixed 1 with just replacing the capacitor at top left hand side of main board rated 100uf 6.3v it fixed a dark nearly blank screen, im going to test every game gear i repair after each capacitor i replace so i can find out which capacitors cause the screen problems, i have a problem with the power board it works via a psu but not with batteries, ive tested power from batteries to board & thats all ok, have you had this problem?
@kainkusanagi Re: game gear power board, ive got another game gear with power problems, switches on then goes out, ive checked for dry solder joints & thats all fine, im wondering if the capacitors on the power board could be the problem, i am going to have to buy some & give it a go as i have 2 game gears with power board problems, i did check the switch & the power port & they are both good on both boards
What kind of capacitors should I be looking for? Like, I know the voltage and microfareds but should they be variable, polyester, polypropylene, ceramic, mylar...etc? To be honest, I'm a newbie at this and I'm just quoting what it says on websites when I click "capacitors" X)
could you buy a screen same size but a new one of other manufacturer and replace it for better colours and no blurring? with power from a power adaptor instead of batteries? that would be awesome
@Thomasgraversen If you were a technical wizard. There is a way to an adapter for output to color TV, and you could then use it on any LCD display. But it would be a hard to do.
@IRONMAIDENFAN2006 I don't know what lines you're talking about. I had two faulty Gameboys. One with a completely dead screen and another that would not power on. I swapped the screen so my brother could have a fully working Gameboy. There were no lines.
@kainkusanagi on certain gameboys there are lines or missing lines i should say its well known problem with them.. they miss one whole line on either side dosnet matter which one.. some say its the screen connector going to the lcd.... but if you replaced it.. where do you buy your screens and for how much?
@IRONMAIDENFAN2006 Like I said I had two faulty Gameboys. I just took the good screen from one that wouldn't turn. I don't think you can buy official Gameboy parts and the LCD screen in the Gameboy was proprietary so you can't put in just any LCD screen. As far as the LCD screen goes if you need a new one you have to get the parts from another Gameboy and sometimes it's cheaper to just replace the whole thing.
Got 3 gamegears for free in a yardsale, 2 of them had faulty screen driver chips (they still didn't work after replacing capacitors), third one looks promising, have to fiddle with the contrast and look at a funny angle to see it *fingers crossed*
Remember you can get free samples of capacitors from companies, so you can stretch your dollar even further! ;)
Hey, nice tutorial, but you should have mentioned that you can use two capacitors in parallel if you cant find the right uF, (ie. use 2 33uF instead of a 62uF) and there is a +/- 20% tolerance, so you can be a bit off. Also, its actually better to have higher voltage capacitors, and the lower ones that the gamegear uses are not in the market anymore. it cost me $4.31 CAD to buy all my capacitors, and I had to buy 2 33uFs to use in parralel. I bought them at a local store.
@kainkusangi I just got a Sega Game Gear for like 30 bucks with a lot of games. But, when I turn it on, I get a black screen with a few white lines. All of the games do this, so I'm not sure if this is the problem, or something else.
@kainkusanagi Well, I got it working last night, and it seems to have the same problem yours did. But its the one with a single ASIC chip, so I'm not sure what capacitors to use. I have soldering experience, but I'm not good with electronic terminology.
awesome...I bet the issue I have with my game gear is probably caused by faulty caps (it's got corruption on the screen; pinkish lines and fails to boot properly).
I just need to find the security bit so I can open it....
Oh, I have a US game gear and I have a bunch of Japanese games (including a japanese tv tuner module).
Just found a Sega Game Gear at a garage sale for $1 (since it appeared dead) but it turns out to have the faulty capacitor issue, not just for the LCD screen, but the built-in speaker as well.
I do a lot of repair work, but just never soldered before. This might be a good place to start. Then again, could this be too tricky for a first time soldering job? :)
Dying to get it working though, I love retro consoles. I even have a Vectrex!
@Apple2gs Cool, I've been in the market for a good deal on a Vectrex for awhile. Anyway, if you need practice soldering just get a piece of junk electronics board and practice soldering wires to it. I don't recommend working on the Game Gear until you've gotten the basics of soldering down.
@kainkusanagi Haven't yet gotten around to repairing my Game Gear yet, but oddly, I may have inadvertently improved the screen. I broke the glue seal on all the affected capacitors so they're loose (but still connected) and now, to my surprise, the screen has improved!
Barely have to tilt it to view, and the brightness is semi-adjustable. It's a *far* cry from being fixed, but it's almost playable now. :) Other possibility, heat/humidity here being 87 F with the humidity level close to 50%!
i have some problems with mine, i bought it cheap with a bunch of games over the web, it only works with 1 of the 7 games i got and the one that works is axe battler japanese version..i also have a red line through the screen on the right side. do i have a japanese version of the game gear that only can play japan games? or is it the screen that needs to be fixed..it´s just white with all the other games.
@Abbathos There's no difference between Japanese and US Game Gears. My guess is the games and system need heavy cleaning to get them all to work. As for the screen, you can try replacing the capacitors on the main board, but I can't promise it will fix your issue.
@kainkusanagi ok, thanks for your information, im gonna ask a friend of mine if he can replace them for me..we might have some capacitors at work..gonna check it out,,thanks again.
How did you get the 130 µF 6.3V capacitor? I looked on Mouser and had no trouble finding the others, but this one is giving me trouble. Could you give me the part # you used?
That bit at the end about trying to fix something even if you don't know how, 'cause at least you'll learn something, is one of the best things i've ever heard.
hi! i replaced all the caps in my gg but the top 1cm of the screens still missing. the backlighting works though and i can see a little of whats happening
@kainkusanagi hmmm... maybe. well the thing is just working fine. i can play games if the top 1cm isnt required. in that bit of the screen i can only see the outlines of things, but thats it :(
I noticed the use of standard through hole capacitors rather than SMD surface mount and for that I don't blame you at all. SMDs are a pain to solder by hand I have done it myself and to be honest I hated it. I too am for restoring the older consoles and was a Game Gear owner myself. The system is sentimental to me as it was my first ever video game system back in 1993 or 1994.
I've replaced all my capacitors and my Game Gear screen still has some faint vertical lines. It may just be the aging LCD screen. Sorry, but I don't have a fix for that yet. If I do I'll post a tutorial.
Thank you! I just recently bought a Game Gear and noticed the screen was hard to see. It was my first time soldering and it was a success! I got away with not replacing the 100 microfarad and 10 microfarad capacitors (couldn't find them). The 4.7 microfarad 35V seemed to be the issue since there was a lot of residue underneath it.
I know! The 1st 6 didn't work at all (black screen or blue screen). The 7th works with barely audible sound and I suspect the screen should be a bit brighter. The 8th one seems to work but I think the sound should be louder. I just had no Game Gear luck at all when I bought them. Thanks to your videos I now know where to begin on repairing them.
BTW, any experience with the Magnavox Odyssey 2? I think I cave a bad cap problem in the 2 that I have (no luck buying either).
I figured I'd just go and replace every cap on the Odyssey board (there aren't that many).
Just finished up repairing the first Game Gear. The audio cap fix worked like a charm! I tried soldering to the old cap leads at first and that didn't go so well. So I removed the leads as per your instructions and it took a lot of work but I finally managed to get the cap soldered to the board. Now I can hear music when I play Columns!
hello liked the video guy, but like much of a help, I have a PC Engine GT with the same problem, you know me about concert? is to save it also as game gear? would appreciate help
I have a Turbo Express which may have similar hardware to the GT. I fixed the audio on it the same way I did for the my Game Gear. I can't say for sure though.
I took my game gear to my job since it's been since 2002 I last used it and I noticed the screen was extremely dark but I knew it wasn't me I had to turn it at a certain angle like you said then I said i well guess i gotta replace the Lcd screen
Then I started searching youtube videos for fixing the game gear came across your video and I knew it had to be either the screen or something else while watching your video I noticed you said gameboy lol ha thx for the video.
I have problems with game gear too. I am from europe. Are specification for capacitors the same? I need to know. I have Lynx too and is working like new, game Gear is diferent story.
Well I can't say for sure since I don't have any experience with European electronics, but I think all Game Gears are manufactured in Asian and since they don't have region lockout and you don't have to worry about PAL and NTSC, I think yours is probably the same as mine. Just open it up, take note of the capacitors and buy replacements of the same specifications.
My game gear has rolling or static white horizontal lines when powered up, but if the brightness is dimmed right down and left for a while, when the brightness is increased again the picture is there. If the power is switched off for a short period, sometimes the game comes straight on, if you switch off for longer, then its back to fiddling with the brightness control. The brightness seems fine when the picture comes and there is no leaking from the caps, could you suggest a cause.
u should not wriggle the caps i dont no why he said that thats wrong u could ruin the pads then u will have the fun of finding the traces u should heat the prongs up with the iron then gently pull it of
u are my hero..thx for the help vid!!! Really fixed the described problem. Next to the sceen issue your audio fix helped too to get my speakers working again!!!
AGAIN thx for this great video and explanation! dont know if i will play again with my gamegear..but was fun to repair it :)
How can you check to make sure it is the capacitor? I have one that bleeds lines when I play sonic and I have to tilt it when I play. And there are 4 lines on the left side of the screen. So how can you test the capacitors?
You'd need a multimeter and some experience to test capacitors. A lot of times you can see the residue from a leaky capacitor. It's cheaper and simpler to just replace the capacitors anyway.
I guess you'd need a replacement ribbon. Sorry, i haven't had to deal with that so the only advice I have is to search online for someone who's had to fix it. If I ever need to do something like that I'll make a video on it.
o thanks for video im from poland in poland only i have maybe sega game gear my frent have sega game gear too i have 3 games sonic 1,2,and batman and i have pong arcade this big atari console arcade is break i repair this pong film please
I don't have a Pong Arcade machine to work with. You're lucky to have such an old arcade unit. The best advice I have is to ask around at arcades about finding a repair man.
thanks man for the advice i got a game gear today and the screen was jacked up. turns out i pulled a retard move some one already fixed it i just had the brightness on high. any way thanks alot!
very helpful, my gamegear has this same problem, too bad i have no skill with sautering so i couldn't do this but at least now i know why its like that
hey very helpfull video, I only have one problem, when I go to the web page you specify, I cannot seem to find the right cap. in your pdf you say a standard electrolityc cap will do but theres four kinds, so if you could specify which thatd be great.

@CaptainPoovabladoo If you've cleaned your games and the Game Gear then you might want to look into replacing the capacitors. I can't say that's your problem, but it's a good place to start.

I repaired 4 game gears thanks to this repair guide! Thank you so much!
Bylga 6 months ago
Thanks for the great vid. I replaced the caps (13 total, including the sound board), and now everything works great. All that I used to have was a scrambled mess of lines on the screen, or a very dim picture that had to be viewed at a ridiculous angle. Now I have a nice picture with great sound.

spitefullworld 7 months ago
Hey Kain.
My GG has the same problem in which it can only be viewed at from a weird angle. But after about 10 minutes of playing like this the picture on it starts multiplying until its just a mess of bright colours . Would this have to do with the bad capacitors as well?
BrikProductions 7 months ago
@BrikProductions Probably. Replacing the capacitors isn't expensive, but it takes time. I'd say it's probably worth it.

I just bought a Game Gear and when I put a game in and turn it on, only a couple of lines of video show up and that's it. I cleaned the games, so might it be the pin connector or something else?
tookmyjob 9 months ago
@tookmyjob It could be the pin connector. Try cleaning it. You might have to get a cleaning kit or you can find directions on the internet.

Hey kainkusanagi, do you offer repair services for game gear??
dogeymon83 9 months ago
@dogeymon83 Sorry, I don't. But it's not hard to do it yourself. You can always use an old piece of broken junk like a busted CD player to practice soldering before trying it on your Game Gear.
kainkusanagi 9 months ago
I got mine apart, but it's a single ASIC chip model, marked Main USA VA5. I can't find any information on a VA5 model. It seems like no one has even heard of it.
timerider4 10 months ago
@timerider4 As far as I know there isn't anywhere you can buy new Game Gear parts. Replacing all the capacitors in your Game Gear will probably fix any issues you have with the screen, but do remember that even when the Game Gear was brand new the screen wasn't great.
kainkusanagi 9 months ago
Thanks so much for posting this. Digging into an old Game Gear and replacing capacitors will be a great intro to electronics for my kids. This video is extremely helpful and I love your attitude about preserving these vintage games and the can-do attitude toward attempting a repair. (As you noted, it's broken already anyway, what's to lose?)
kakisky 10 months ago
@kakisky Fixing electronics is a great skill to teach your kids, but if I were you I'd use Lead Free solder only for their health. Lead solder is better and the amount you'd be exposed to is tiny, but you can't be too safe with your kids.
kainkusanagi 9 months ago
@kainkusanagi
Thank you - that is excellent advice.
kakisky 9 months ago
I just bought one today. It doesn't have a problem that gets better with the viewing angle, but the screen does look washed out. Is there way to upgrade the display itself?
The rubber button contacts also feel worn out, and I can't find a place that sells parts.
timerider4 10 months ago
@CaptainPoovabladoo I can't say for sure, but a good place to start would be replacing all the capacitors in it. At least open it up to look for signs of leaking capacitors.
kainkusanagi 10 months ago
@kainkusanagi I have heard that when replacing the capacitors it is ok to use higher voltage ones, how much higher is too much?
maxvicius129 5 months ago
@maxvicius129 That's true. So long as the uF is the same, you can use any voltage higher than the original.
kainkusanagi 5 months ago
@kainkusanagi Thanks very much mate =) Putting the order into Element 14 now.
maxvicius129 5 months ago
@maxvicius129
higher voltage just means that the material used in the capacitor has a higher break down voltage. As long as the capacitor values are the same then the higher voltage rating is not significant.

Are you going to do a video on how to repair the screen on the game boy?
Deathbydiease 11 months ago
@Deathbydiease I don't have any plans to. I don't have a one that needs fixing and I don't know of any common issues with easy fixes. Sometimes the pixels go bad on Gameboy, but other than replacement I don't know any other work around. If it's "vertical lines" then it's possible a bad component like a capacitor is causing it, but I can't say for sure.
kainkusanagi 11 months ago
i had 2 game gears the first fall down and the screen got broken, and the second i had a plug cord that let you change voltage and i overvoltage it and the screen died as i wa splaying,i still have sound but screen is dead :'(

Hi, Kainkusanagi, thanks for your explanations.
Here you can see the problem:

Thanks in advance for any help.
0Kajuna0 11 months ago
@0Kajuna0 I watched your video. Sorry, but I've never seen anything like that before. You might want to check all your solder points to make sure none of them cracked or came loose. That's about all the advice I can give. Good luck.
kainkusanagi 11 months ago
this is exactly the problem I have with my gamegear. I was so sad because I have had it since I was 10. I may fix it. But I am scared of screwing up the gamegear.
Thanks for the tutorial. Also amazing game watch. I have the same one and a super mario one that has a headphone jack built in. At the time I thought it was the coolest thing ever.
obiwan5832 1 year ago
@cavegoat13 capacitor problems can also cause ghost lines on the screen, rapid white moving lines, and sometimes cause it to turn itself off to me it sounds like u need to change the capacitors.

do u have part #s you oder at mouser.com for the capacitor to fix lcd screen i cant find them
betothreeg 1 year ago
@betothreeg Sorry, but you really need to open your Game Gear and order the parts specifically. If it helps, you're looking for electrolyte capacitors. If mouser doesn't have what your looking for there are several other online electronics stores and you can even buy parts at your local radioshack or other electronics repair shops.

Noob here with a stupid question: How much voltage difference is allowed? I have found some 10μ capacitors but they are 16V. Is that too much or..?
SanDaren1 1 year ago
@SanDaren1 The voltage can be higher but not lower. So if you need to replace a 10uf 20 volt cap you can use a 10uf 100 volt cap.

The issues with the screen are a bit problematic to explain, and I can't find anything about it on Google.
cavegoat13 1 year ago
@cavegoat13 It could just be too dirty or the even the games need a cleaning. Unless you can hear the game but not see it, then I would say you have a screen problem and replacement the capacitors might help.

im still playing about with the game gears, i fixed 1 with just replacing the capacitor at top left hand side of main board rated 100uf 6.3v it fixed a dark nearly blank screen, im going to test every game gear i repair after each capacitor i replace so i can find out which capacitors cause the screen problems, i have a problem with the power board it works via a psu but not with batteries, ive tested power from batteries to board & thats all ok, have you had this problem?

where is the gameboy screen fix?
IRONMAIDENFAN2006 1 year ago
@IRONMAIDENFAN2006 The only "fix" I've ever done on a Gameboy is swap out screens. I've never tried to repair any components.
kainkusanagi 1 year ago
@kainkusanagi oh you didnt try and fix the cable to get rid of those lines?
IRONMAIDENFAN2006 1 year ago
@IRONMAIDENFAN2006 I don't know what lines you're talking about. I had two faulty Gameboys. One with a completely dead screen and another that would not power on. I swapped the screen so my brother could have a fully working Gameboy. There were no lines.
kainkusanagi 1 year ago
@kainkusanagi on certain gameboys there are lines or missing lines i should say its well known problem with them.. they miss one whole line on either side dosnet matter which one.. some say its the screen connector going to the lcd.... but if you replaced it.. where do you buy your screens and for how much?
IRONMAIDENFAN2006 1 year ago

Remember you can get free samples of capacitors from companies, so you can stretch your dollar even further! ;)
TherealGMer56 1 year ago

Stainlesssteele4 1 year ago
@Stainlesssteele4 It's most likely full of bad capacitors. I can't say for sure if replacing them will solve your problem though.
kainkusanagi 1 year ago
@kainkusanagi Well, I got it working last night, and it seems to have the same problem yours did. But its the one with a single ASIC chip, so I'm not sure what capacitors to use. I have soldering experience, but I'm not good with electronic terminology.
Stainlesssteele4 1 year ago
awesome...I bet the issue I have with my game gear is probably caused by faulty caps (it's got corruption on the screen; pinkish lines and fails to boot properly).
I just need to find the security bit so I can open it....
Oh, I have a US game gear and I have a bunch of Japanese games (including a japanese tv tuner module).
mofoq 1 year ago
Just found a Sega Game Gear at a garage sale for $1 (since it appeared dead) but it turns out to have the faulty capacitor issue, not just for the LCD screen, but the built-in speaker as well.
I do a lot of repair work, but just never soldered before. This might be a good place to start. Then again, could this be too tricky for a first time soldering job? :)
Dying to get it working though, I love retro consoles. I even have a Vectrex!
Apple2gs 1 year ago
@Apple2gs Cool, I've been in the market for a good deal on a Vectrex for awhile. Anyway, if you need practice soldering just get a piece of junk electronics board and practice soldering wires to it. I don't recommend working on the Game Gear until you've gotten the basics of soldering down.
kainkusanagi 1 year ago
That is exactly what I did, I practiced soldering with old worn out cables.
I quickly got the hang of it and I repaired my game gear.
Riddler95 1 year ago
@kainkusanagi Haven't yet gotten around to repairing my Game Gear yet, but oddly, I may have inadvertently improved the screen. I broke the glue seal on all the affected capacitors so they're loose (but still connected) and now, to my surprise, the screen has improved!
Barely have to tilt it to view, and the brightness is semi-adjustable. It's a *far* cry from being fixed, but it's almost playable now. :) Other possibility, heat/humidity here being 87 F with the humidity level close to 50%!

Abbathos 1 year ago
@Abbathos There's no difference between Japanese and US Game Gears. My guess is the games and system need heavy cleaning to get them all to work. As for the screen, you can try replacing the capacitors on the main board, but I can't promise it will fix your issue.

I think I cave a bad cap problem in the 2 that I have (no luck buying either).

prulcan 2 years ago

The caps don't need to have leaked to have gone bad. It could still be the capacitors.

How can you check to make sure it is the capacitor? I have one that bleeds lines when I play sonic and I have to tilt it when I play. And there are 4 lines on the left side of the screen. So how can you test the capacitors?
valeriepowers 2 years ago
You'd need a multimeter and some experience to test capacitors. A lot of times you can see the residue from a leaky capacitor. It's cheaper and simpler to just replace the capacitors anyway.
kainkusanagi 2 years ago
What if it is the ribbon cable? How would you go about fixing that? Cause I have a big problem with the 4 lines on the left of the screen.
valeriepowers 2 years ago
I guess you'd need a replacement ribbon. Sorry, i haven't had to deal with that so the only advice I have is to search online for someone who's had to fix it. If I ever need to do something like that I'll make a video on it.

Pablog54b 2 years ago
You really don't need to worry too much, so long as it has the right uF and same or higher voltage. Just get the smallest you can find.
If you have an electronics store in your area that sells capacitors you could take your Game Gear in and have them sort it out for you.
