Anyone know of the Thorpe-Le-Soken (In Essex) box group? Went to the Oyster and Archer of the fayre competition this weekend. And to fairebow to get my new traditional longbow and ammunition. wouldent mind shooting with other people at real targets..other than by myself at milk cartons over a farmers field lol
@szolnok95 horse bows were made to 80 lbs of power longbows up to 180 lbs, the only way a horsebow is better is when used tacticly because of its shortness wich makes it easyer to use on horseback.
@szolnok95 I'm not sure you can say one bow is better than another. It all depends on how the bow is meant to be used. I doubt that the Hungarian Horse Bow would have been as effective as the Longbow at Crecy. And I doubt the Longbow would have been as effective on horseback. ;)
@jamesiow75 England only adopted the techniques after besieging Wales... evidently Welsh independence was a threat to the Crown.
Besides guys, these bows are nowhere near as heavy as traditional English warbows. Archaeologists can tell whether skeletons belonged to archers because the bones in their left forearms and right fingers were deformed after constant use.
...just sayin', guys, English longbows rock my socks, but this is only part of the way to the epitome of medieval win.
Imagine the ancient European "Barbarians" armed with wonder weapons like this during their wars with the Romans. The Roman Legions would have been cut to pieces.
@Stordongen These things could pierce plate armor from 50+ yards away, the romans were no match, of course the longbow didn't see widespread popularity until the end of the Byzantine Empire, i believe, of course i could be wrong.
@blorchdude4 Oh I see, don't feel to bad, when sober I cut my thumb open trying to make a self bow, just live and learn, I will never make the same mistake again with a knife. Anyway heal soon so you can enjoy your bow :D!

@blorchdude4 I hurt my back right as my longbow was delivered, just got to shoot it today for the first time and even though it's only a target 15 feet away it is more fun than I could have possibly imagined! Now it is storming out but I like the rain so I break a while :), Cannot wait to move to the country! How did you hurt your hand :( hope your shooting again soon! :D Seeyaround my friend!
im wanting to get into archery and what a english long bow but i can only find flatlongbows anyone have anyidea where i can get them..... im a teenager and live in australia
@D4nman I have a feeling you have to work up to something like a longbow, but I could be wrong, over here there are a lot of gun/rifle clubs that have a group that do archery, try there, hope that helped :)
@Dreamscape52 I practice archery, there are 3 main classes: Compund (Big strong american hunting bow powered by wheels) Recurve (the "normal" bow u see on olympics and so on, defined by the string meeting one of the limbs on the inside) and longbow. There is no "working up" to long bow, but beginners normally start out in recurve class, since it is the easiest bow to learn.
@pelleban Yeah that's what I mean, starting with something smaller than a longbow,I used ot practice with a recurve, never got on too well with that three finger olympic style, always found it much easier when I used two fingers and sandwiched the arrow between my forefinger and middle finger.
I would think a longbow is best worked up to,like guns, you CAN start big,but best to start small and work up,that's what i'm meaning.
Only thing i've seen bigger than a longbow is a Yumi bow.
@Dreamscape52 Yeah, you seem to have quit practice a bit early ;) In "Olympic Style", or "Freestyle" when u use an aim, u sandwich the arrow between index and forefinger still anchoring with 3 fingers, and in classic style u hold 3 fingers below the arrow on the string and aim with the arrowtip and anchor on the cheek instead of chin. Normally guys that can't do well with a recurve bow, start using a compound, and those that are more into the "love of the bow as a weapon" go longbow ;)
@pelleban Sadly I didn't get to practice for long, the classes I was going to had so many kids there we were barely getting a chance to shoot, sure anyone can try it,but I think when I go to try it next time,i'll join a gun club and go do it with them, with adults, anything with weapons I tend to take quite seriously.
@TheRealJackSherack Yeoman archers (Like robin hood) Were the best from what I've heard, for recurves the huns were, and vikings used the longbow way before welsh and many other people did too, it was named English longbow by the french I believe and its just a way to ID this bow to people, I do credit the welsh for a lot including good archer tactics and castes like, Harlech, Conwy and Kedwilly, I love all cultures and their histories its all wonderful to me :D Good day sir :)
Would not like to be a French knight on the recieving end of a flight of longbow arrows XD Hell, I am from Australia (yes, a rack-mouthed colonial) and I love the longbow, and the way it helped shape European history.
@DanMarik point and shoot to kill a knight :) crossbows still took lots of training and were nowhere near as effective as a longbow. the crossbow had a longer range, but by the time the crossbow was reloaded an archer could run into range and fire off 2-3 arrows. also archers were peasents as well but the longbow was a rage across england during the 100 year war so there was a ready supply to take to France. but the idea of the peasantry of england killing the nobility of france amuses me :P
1. A Lord would equip his peasants with crossbows or a Spear. Crossbow was very cost effective as it took only a day to learn how to load, pick your target, release and had enough force to pierce armor. Longbow took years of training to become effective of it.
2. The English Adaptation of the longbow had one of the greatest ranges in Europe's Armory.
@areusirius Part 2. I will not doubt the superiority of the Longbow as it was the deciding factor in many battles of the Hundreds Years War. The Generic French-Italian Crossbow was the only thing that was held off those English Knights from getting to close. Also It was the Peasantry of France killing the Nobility of England. The French-Italian Crossbow could fire 3 shots where as the Welsh Longbow could fire off to 9. England had bad experiences with the crossbow, poor Richard the Lionheart. :D
@nbombadil If you hate the English long bow that much mate why are you looking up clips on the subject on YouTube? My you grow up to be the owner of a thousand bed room hotel and be found dead in every room. ;-)
@ATA4201488 The bows seen are not war bows that can be up to 180lb (although I have only ever seen one that heavy used) and are pulled back to the ear not the lip or cheek as these are. These are light hunting or target bows of the same basic long bow design. So the power is extremely low in comparison. A full powered war bow, if fired in anger, would go straight throw the targets being use for this shoot.
@tina6581 I understand the difference between these longbows and heavybows, the question about time at full draw still stands from both the point of the bow and technique.
English longbow was rated 3rd most effective and reliable weapon in the world above most modern guns, it can be more accurate as its accuracy does not depend on mechanics and only the skill of the archer, it hits with more force and has more penetration, and its heavier and more durable arrows survive the impact. Personaly I would rather have this easy to build easy to use and easy to build ammo for weapon in the end of the world over a stupid m16 anyday :O!
@ishbo22 Actually guns are far superior, or perhaps we get a cross continental guided missile! :D Or maybe a interplanetary instantaneous guided subspace beam cannon to kill a deer or shoot a target board for fun?
The medieval machine-gun. I'm Scottish myself, but I'll give themy credit - the longbow made the English the best in the world at warfare for centuries.
@edinscot56789 Hey! What kinds of bows did the Scots use? In the history books I don't get to see the archery in detail like when people research the English longbow.
@GOBRAGH2 I don't know, but I'm sure they were pretty crappy, unless they stole longbows off dead English and Welsh archers and used them in future engagements. The Scots were specialists in light infantry and guerilla tactics; skirmishers, spearmen, pikemen, that sort of thing. Their fighting reflected that, because their schiltrons were excellent against heavily armoured units such as knights and men-at-arms. They were fast, mobile, flexible - that was their strength. They used the land.
@GOBRAGH2 Nah scots didnt do bows so much, has ash bows and stuff for hunting and a few probably used then in battle but was mainly close range weapons and effective use of terrain! Used long handles weapons like spears etc, mostly sword though and a range of farm impliments since alot of folks couldnt afford armour and well made steel weapons!
@StarLaughter15 If you want you can make your own bow and arrows :) There are many videos on youtube that show a person how. My brother and my cousin both have made their own.
@nimphas i dont personally own a compound bow but they dont interest me there to good i like challenges ive used one they never miss but with a traditional its more heritage im proud to be English
@Skweeglz dude archery runs in the blood of allmost all ppl..l all nations used bows before guns not just native americans... in my opinium medival english longbowans vere the most elite , experienced and skilled bowmans of all time.
@ralphyboy1 Because during the middle ages no other nation used the Longbow as much or so effectively as the English. The French, and others, actually called it the
"English Bow." With it the English came to dominate the battlefields of Europe.
nice to see real archers, i just saw some video of some korean he she who had like a 3000 doller bow, with a stabalizer bigger than hin and he was splitting string from 30m now thats a hard shot but he has a giant stabilizer and that gay ass bow probably has 90% let off they just ruin archery
Good to see some people doing real archery, my videos on longbow and flatbow archery get shoved aside by pathetic compound archers showing how much money they have with all that cheating technology.
Hi! im 13 turning 14 in 12 days :D i am going to either buy a narrow english longbow or a english warbow lookalike ( thicker and beefier than narrow english longbow but not as high poundage) I was going to buy a 60-65 pound bow but decided not to ( i know its a little to much but i am actually pretty strong and lost of people underestimate my strength) I knew it would be a struggle but i was willing to get stronger but now im either buying a 40-45 pounder or a 50-55 or even maybe a 55-60 prob no
@superknight660 Most bowyers I know reccomend starting with about 32-35 pounds.Doesn't sound much but these peole know what they are talking about and
it it better to start to low than to high.
By the way,a Warbow is of much higher poundage than a Longbow, between 80-120,and there are, even today, archers who shoot bows of even higher poundage.\
so i've got a question....most people seem to shoot logbows staright up and down, but recurve bows are normally tilted when shot. is this just depend on the archer, not the bow, or is it the style for the bow? (by recurve, i mean legit ones, not compound)
Now this is what I'm talking about. I'm sick of seeing so many vids with all these hi-tech gadget bullshit held by some big fat idiot redneck. This is archery at its finest.
@Hazama567 I couldn't agree with you more about how disgusting it is to use modern technology to increase power and accuracy of a weapon or hunting instrument. I would say that even the high power rifle with open sights or a ghastly telescopic sight is cheating. One should use the rifle or bow as an extension of ones own body and become instinctive with aim. I do think that the rifle or bow is too far along the path of technology for any real man to use anyway and think we should stick to clubs
@leeham991 Agreed :D! The english longbow was rated 3rd most effective and reliable weapon of all time above most modern guns, and compounds were not even mentioned :)!
The joys of archery. I just bought my first longbow, 50# 7' ; and loving all of it. a bit much for my untrained self, but i am definitely looking forward to practicing with it all summer!
didnt see one person shooting longbow style. ie pulling the arrow back to the ear. Beautiful to see love going to this kind of thing even if it is just to watch
1: Slow down. Do you know how to properly use a bow? You could really injure yourself if you don't. If not, you should get lessons. Also, you may not even like archery if you haven't tried it.
2: 40 lbs Might be too high. Try out the bow before you buy it.
If you have already bought the bow, please disregard.
@Gabumon54321 come on man! 40 isnt to high maybe if he isnt that big but u got to give him so cred right? why would u buy a bow if u didnt like archery ? im just saying ^_^ i admire slashrocks confidence :) keep shootin everyone :D
@Gabumon54321 Indeed it would :P thats why we try it first ( if we can) advice to all: dont buy a bow that u absolutely know you wont be able to shoot >.< like not even pull it to half draw XD and keep shootin everyone XD practice makes perfect :D good luck slashrocks XD
@Gabumon54321 Meh i was trying to say be more confident in the kid, and if he does make that mistake then he will hav to learn from them XD nobody is perfect :D keep shootin peoples :)
A great video, one to watch over and over every time you see something that you missed before, one thing i did see was that one of the bows is made the wrong way round, right at the begining of the video you see all the other bows with the sap wood on the outside but one has it on the inside and the hart wood on the outside
tech. the longbow should be pulled back to the ear for the full strength of the bow but then you cant aim you have to feel. still sick video and music is spot on!
This is an awesome video. The music is excellent; it lends just the right "feel" to the event. And that there are young and old, men, women, teenagers... all terrific. Kudos to jagstanguk and to the archery club. Seeing all those longbows throwing their arrows... just thrilling. Thank you!
I suggest anyone who would love a good read about the power of the English longbow, check out Bernard Cornwell's books. Specifically, The Grail Quest series and the book titled Agincourt.
You can get Longbows that range from like 40lb Draw weight all the way up to easily over 100lb Draw weight, but even 100lbs is very difficult, takes alot of strength and great technique to use efficiently.
Depends what you're looking at. 40-70lb are target bows and 80-120lb is war bow territory.
Above 120 not much is gained and apparently all they're for is building muscle. Of course you could still use them as warbows but generally they weren't due to difficult use and loss of accuracy.
@ihaterobbie123 - Longbow- Robert Hardy, ( Siegfried Off All creatures great and small!) Would give yo ISDN number but lent to a friend! Try amazon or similar online bookstores. Hope this helps :0)
Depends on which style you are shooting. Western styles shoot on the index finger side and eastern styles shoot on the thumb side. What bow you shoot can also impact how well you do with each style. For instance shooting a yumi (Japanese longbow) with the arrow on the index side might work, but you are far better off shooting on the thumb side since the bow is made for that.

Used long handles weapons like spears etc, mostly sword though and a range of farm impliments since alot of folks couldnt afford armour and well made steel weapons!

@Skweeglz dude archery runs in the blood of allmost all ppl..l all nations used bows before guns not just native americans... in my opinium medival english longbowans vere the most elite , experienced and skilled bowmans of all time.
SteelCrash 1 year ago
@SteelCrash Why are english the most elite?
ralphyboy1 1 year ago
@ralphyboy1 cuz longobwmans vere uniqe
SteelCrash 1 year ago
@ralphyboy1 Because during the middle ages no other nation used the Longbow as much or so effectively as the English. The French, and others, actually called it the
"English Bow." With it the English came to dominate the battlefields of Europe.

nice to see real archers, i just saw some video of some korean he she who had like a 3000 doller bow, with a stabalizer bigger than hin and he was splitting string from 30m now thats a hard shot but he has a giant stabilizer and that gay ass bow probably has 90% let off they just ruin archery

@limeheadrickey well said man!!!, i totally agree

Good to see some people doing real archery, my videos on longbow and flatbow archery get shoved aside by pathetic compound archers showing how much money they have with all that cheating technology.

Hi! im 13 turning 14 in 12 days :D i am going to either buy a narrow english longbow or a english warbow lookalike ( thicker and beefier than narrow english longbow but not as high poundage) I was going to buy a 60-65 pound bow but decided not to ( i know its a little to much but i am actually pretty strong and lost of people underestimate my strength) I knew it would be a struggle but i was willing to get stronger but now im either buying a 40-45 pounder or a 50-55 or even maybe a 55-60 prob no
superknight660 1 year ago
@superknight660 Most bowyers I know reccomend starting with about 32-35 pounds.Doesn't sound much but these peole know what they are talking about and
it it better to start to low than to high.
By the way,a Warbow is of much higher poundage than a Longbow, between 80-120,and there are, even today, archers who shoot bows of even higher poundage.\

Any idea what range they are shooting at?
1234567h9 1 year ago
so i've got a question....most people seem to shoot logbows staright up and down, but recurve bows are normally tilted when shot. is this just depend on the archer, not the bow, or is it the style for the bow? (by recurve, i mean legit ones, not compound)
emaruldkosmima 1 year ago
@lordfranz24 original recurve bows are fine, those date way back, but it's using the compound bows that is "cheating"
emaruldkosmima 1 year ago
Now this is what I'm talking about. I'm sick of seeing so many vids with all these hi-tech gadget bullshit held by some big fat idiot redneck. This is archery at its finest.
Hazama567 1 year ago
@Hazama567 absolutely true
intwernet 1 year ago
@Hazama567 I couldn't agree with you more about how disgusting it is to use modern technology to increase power and accuracy of a weapon or hunting instrument. I would say that even the high power rifle with open sights or a ghastly telescopic sight is cheating. One should use the rifle or bow as an extension of ones own body and become instinctive with aim. I do think that the rifle or bow is too far along the path of technology for any real man to use anyway and think we should stick to clubs

what pound bows are most of these guys doing i dont know wat pound bow to get

get what ever poundage you can comfortably pull, though I would suggest something in the 40-50 pound range if you are a beginner

slashrocks000 1 year ago
@slashrocks000 idk im 13 and im bout to buy one also.
poisenmushrooms4u 1 year ago
@slashrocks000 I know this is an older comment but....
Gabumon54321 1 year ago
@Gabumon54321 come on man! 40 isnt to high maybe if he isnt that big but u got to give him so cred right? why would u buy a bow if u didnt like archery ? im just saying ^_^ i admire slashrocks confidence :) keep shootin everyone :D
superknight660 1 year ago
@superknight660 But, it would suck if you bought a bow only to find it is too heavy for you.
Gabumon54321 1 year ago
@Gabumon54321 Indeed it would :P thats why we try it first ( if we can) advice to all: dont buy a bow that u absolutely know you wont be able to shoot >.< like not even pull it to half draw XD and keep shootin everyone XD practice makes perfect :D good luck slashrocks XD

A great video, one to watch over and over every time you see something that you missed before, one thing i did see was that one of the bows is made the wrong way round, right at the begining of the video you see all the other bows with the sap wood on the outside but one has it on the inside and the hart wood on the outside
bsacadetmajor 2 years ago
tech. the longbow should be pulled back to the ear for the full strength of the bow but then you cant aim you have to feel. still sick video and music is spot on!

How many pounds is the drawback on one of these bows? And can someone tell me where I can purchase one in the States? I'm interested in this xD
You can pm me
ISnipeU 2 years ago
You can get Longbows that range from like 40lb Draw weight all the way up to easily over 100lb Draw weight, but even 100lbs is very difficult, takes alot of strength and great technique to use efficiently.
leesin666 1 year ago
@leesin666
Depends what you're looking at. 40-70lb are target bows and 80-120lb is war bow territory.
Above 120 not much is gained and apparently all they're for is building muscle. Of course you could still use them as warbows but generally they weren't due to difficult use and loss of accuracy.
ihaterobbie123 1 year ago
@ihaterobbie123 There were 165 war bows recovered from the wreck of the Mary Rose and the upper limit draw weight on the most powerful was 180lb

is the arrow always rested on the knukle side of the hand or can it be rested on the thumb ?
SPENWASHGAZZ 2 years ago
You could, but why would you?
Bertziethegreat 2 years ago
Depends on which style you are shooting. Western styles shoot on the index finger side and eastern styles shoot on the thumb side. What bow you shoot can also impact how well you do with each style. For instance shooting a yumi (Japanese longbow) with the arrow on the index side might work, but you are far better off shooting on the thumb side since the bow is made for that.
