I have movies that I made taken from the same place, from 1971. Piedmont YS-11's, FH-227's, Southern Airways Convair, and Eastern Cargo Lockheed L-100. Didn't realize that Eastern had so many A300's.
OMG..Great video..brings back many memories. I used to fly out of the airport with my family to Greece - always flying Eastern or Piedmont to NYC for the int'l flight. Many many memories...love the old planes - miss Piedmont
Nice video Of Charlotte Douglas Airport in 1979! Do you know what happened to the old terminal and what concourse was it? Did Piedmont Airlines have a base there?
Did they replace the old terminal, what is the song? I know Eastern airlines was based there!!! Again, nice video!!!!!!!!
10,000 thank-yous for this video. I wish you had more. CLT was my first big airport upon becoming a civil aviation buff. I have a collection of great photos from this very observation deck. Is it just me, or was air travel more fun and glamorous back then? Maybe it's just old age talking. The planes then had distinction and color -- now they all tend to look alike. This brings back great memories. L-1011s and 727s were so majestic and awesome. Thanks again!
Eastern used to be fun and respectable-before deregulation--you used to get real food on the plane;now you just get peanuts--a rude stewards and stewardesses
I don't think they have observation decks anymore. In JAX they had one that you paid 5 cents and climbed a spiral staircase, and you were on the roof, on top of B concourse. And they had viewers you could look through.
Thank you for this video! I was on the observation deck on October 18, 1980 to celebrate my recent 15th birthday and took several photos from this location. It's amazing that Eastern operated a Hub with the limited space.
Thanks for the compliments. The widebodies were not diversions believe or not. For a few years in the late 70s Delta used an L-1011 for the early morning flight to Atlanta. Eastern had a respectable operation at CLT and routinely used L-1011s and A300s to various destination such as LGA.

@goombabear It's funny that you should call it old when its older now than it was then.

Amazing seeing A300's and L1011's back in the day in CLT. Growing up, I always thought Piedmonts 767s to LGW were the first heavies in CLT.

Great video. Thank goodness you shot this film.
I noticed several widebodies from both DA and EA. I wonder if they were in Charlotte because of weather diversion from ATL?
