MTV used to play this kind of stuff in their infancy, for the first couple of years you would see videos by Madness, Tenpole Tudor, The Pretenders (who were at the time seen as an underground band). It gave these bands exposure that they really needed. Then Duran Duran took over and it all went downhill from there.

He was simply commenting that today's R&B is just so watered down and basically just the same thing over and over that we've heard for the last 20 years that this music is a nice change. But the original idea came from Jamaica in the 1960's. Check out The Trojan Label for some original stuff. Basically Madness was part of and beginning of a SKA revival.
