Vange had made an influence on Rex. Because of what Van did for his sister causes him now to take the high road. In truth, he realizes that Van is good for John. John doesn't seem to realize it, but he needs Van. Van/REG causes everyone in her life to step up to the plate. She did it with John, Todd and Cristian. She is a powerhouse. It takes a strong woman to walk away from the man your in love with and an even stronger woman to help the woman who came between your relationship with him.

I am a fan of Natalie's as well as Evangeline but she did really step over the line when John was with Vange. It's no excuse but she was young, immature and bratty and she had a crazy adoptive mother. But as much as I love John, he is partly to blame as well. He fed into Natalie each and every time and he should have told her he loved Evangeline and their interaction was over. Vange was smart, she knew John loved her but she also was not okay with his attachment to Nat and she walked away.

Rex acknowledges that Evangeline is very special to John and he also realize that his sister can only keep Johns attention as long as she's in danger or some kind of trouble!
