The videos that show a portraying of Christ are not getting worshipped, they are just an example of how much pain and suffering Christ went through because of His unimaginable Love for us. It shows the humanity of Christ because he was 100% man and 100% God.
I am saddened to see strong convictions used by the enemy to further divide the body of Christ and pray for people on both sides of this issue to know that He who is our Savior and Healer may be speaking those convictions to some of us to keep us from sinning, while He has other things He convicts others in the body about.
Beautiful voice. i loved listening to her rendition of this loved song. I do not support legalism, but personally am uncomfortable with images of Christ and crosses. I however only share this when someone offers me one as a gift, or I am in a mentoring place in someone's life that God leads me to share my personal feelings.
Thank you do much for your comments and scripture. I've been raised my while life in a Christian environment. I've never liked pictures..images of Jesus. I always seem to get made fun of feeling this way and it bothers me greatly. I have to say with some embarrassment that I never knew there was scripture to back up what I knew in my heart wasn't right. I'm thinking it's never too late in life to learn something new from the Word of God. Thank you do much for sharing your faith. God Bless You.
By the way, what did the Jewish people carve for the mercy seat on the ark of the covenant? Also what were all of the stones of the Temple which God commanded be built carved with? What were the images carved of olive wood in that temple? That temple that represented the coming revelation that each of God's children were to be living stones of the church built by Christ. It is a challenging question regarding the Ark and Temple, for these were built after God delivered His law to Moses.

I don't kneel down and pray at an image of Christ, and there is a big difference between icons that are prayed to and worshiped and knelt before. Should we start removing crosses off of Church buildings? Sadly legalistic...
Problem: the meaning of 'not creating any graven image' is qualified by the EXTENSIVE commands and descriptions of how to create various images (cherubim for example) for the Temple/Ark.
An 'image of Christ' is only 'graven' if you are worshiping it instead of Christ. As a representation, it's completely fine.
I love ur video & I understand ur point but I think what the bible says is making these images and worshiping them bcos verse 5 (thou shall not bow down before them and worship them...)is a continuation of vs 4. This is what the people of Isreal did (read Ex 32:4-9). Vs 8 said "they have turned aside out of the way I commanded them". Other denominations use images of a dove (for Holy Spirit) not only catholics. All I can say is may God direct us in the Spirit & truth for we are saved by grace. .

Hello Brother,The Lord led me right to your video. I agree with you 100%. I do not like the emphasis on the 6 hours of Christ's suffering on the cross. The Catholic people still have him on the cross, when He is at the right hand of the Father making intercession for us.
Also, I have searched in vain for Damaris Carbaugh's version, and it absolutely does not appear on youtube. Very telling.
brother, i suggest to you that you take a look into weather you have a pharisee heart. It seems very clear that you are preaching legalism, a scary place to be from my understanding. the jews of 70A.D didn't fare to well from it. love ya bro, stay in the word of our lord.
Three verses: John 19:5 Then Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said to them, "Behold the Man!";Col 1:15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.;2 Cor 4:4 whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them. ...I love the song by the way, I am not convinced that an image of Christ (if we dont worship it) counts
lol yeah, patric henreys wrote common sense lol, and i get what your saying, may not nescasarily agree with it, but i understand what your saying, and i can respect it. I myself love the song, i sing it at youth group, it's a very beautiful song.
From a Catholic's point of view and going to church daily. Yes, there are images of Christ and they are truly beautiful. We DO NOT worship these statues or any images depilated in stain glass. Most churches that have these are very old and go back to a tradition of not worship but of glory to Jesus, the infant Jesus, Mary and Saints. I believe they are beautiful and they are not Worshiped. To believe that the Catholic church worships these it nothing but ignorance.
I read that scripture passage you are referring to, ex: 20-4.
If you read ex: 20-5 it says, "you shall not bow down before them or worship. For I, the LORD, your God, am a jealous God, inflicting punishment for their fathers' wickedness on the children of those who hate me, down to the third and fourth generation;"
Ex: 20-16 is a commandment," thou shalt not worship false idols"
Ex: 2-17 is another commandment, " thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house.
I'd never seen paintings, etc, as claiming to be direct depictions of Christ. Since of course there is little documentation on what He physically looked like (as it wasn't very important), I'd always seen images as symbols of Christ. What would make an image of a man on a cross blasphemous, but an image of a slaughtered lamb acceptable? No, the image of a man can never fully give God all he deserves, but no image can for that matter. Must Christians then avoid God in art?
@Truthspark That's exactly what I am trying to say. To view images of Christ is not worshiping his holiness at all. It gives glory to the son of God. Wasn't he part human? I haven't seen an graven images of God…no one has seen him only the son of God. So how can we worship images God when there is none. There may be paintings of what God may look like, but it's not God because we don't know. I believe bberchin is being a ignorant of what he thinks he knows. I am offend as a Catholic.

I don't think those images are meant to be idols. I think they are meant to be just illustrations. It's important not to judge. In fact I don't like self-righteous people who only see wrong in everything around them. I pray to God He will give you a spirit of discernment instead.
Your daughters voice is sweet but I cant say I agree with much of what you say it was a movie that brought my dad to salvation (Jesus of Nazareth) and the passion of the Christ brought many to salvation and was a move of the Holy spirit in a powerful way. Its worshiping images or anything or anyone other then He himself that grieves the lord
@dolores121859 Thank you for the compliment. As for your disagreement- Don't let experience be your guide, but rather scripture- "Faith comes by hearing and hearing bu the word of Christ"- Romans 10:17. Any of those who came to faith came because they heard the gospel and the Holy Spirit regenerated them. The hearing of the gospel is the only means by which the Holy Spirit applies salvation to the elect. We can only see the backside of God's tapestry.
@bberchin I understand what your saying and love the scriptures but our personal experiences in relationship with God who is the word . Not our emotions since they are not infallible but through the holy spirit ,also the scriptures do speak about looking to some images to remind us of promises of God.
I first want to say that I to think your daughter did an awesome job :-) it is a great song indeed! I was wondering what you thought of the Passion of Christ! I always thought that everyone should watch it at least once. I do believe that God had used that movie greatly in peoples lives. It really brings the gospel to life. But I liked your reply of Romans 10:17 :-) God can use anything to reach out to people. It was the message not the image that saved them. :-)
Hi my Dad is a pastor and he just preached Exodus 20:4, it's talking about idols. Like when Moses went on the mountain and the people made the golden calf.
An Elder at our church loves this song as well. I appreciate your stand on graven images. My heart is saddened as well as I see so many depictions of Our Lord Jesus as well. Your little girl did a great job!
it says not to show god, god was never human, jesus was, there is somewhat of a difference between the two. So i think its ok to have pictures of Jesus, i have never seen a picture of God.
@Weezymagee Jesus IS God. "I and the Father are one." Remember? Besides, what did Jesus look like? How is it helpful to see a picture of some person the Catholics think looked like Him? It belittles His glory which is why the second commandment says what it says.
It is good for us to fear God. But how do we interpret "image"? I don't think we should interpret it literally. Man is made by God's image not physically speaking but spiritually. Man sins and lose the very image of God. Then we are not portrait God using man's own characters. His way is much higher than ours. I believe that is the true meaning of God's intent.
I completely agree with you about the graven images of God. I was actually looking for a video of this song but was also disappointed by the seeming lack of respect. Thank you for your video! It was very encouraging! :)
You have a good point, i see that people could get that as a misconception. But we are not worshipping the image. As oyioyioi said i think also that we can use it to remind ourselves of the sacrifice that Jesus Christ did. We acknowledge that God is almighty and can not be represented by images, but Jesus DID come as 100% man and 100% God. I do not think that showing images of Jesus as man reduces him. But yes, if we worship the image itself then yes that is wrong.
Using a gruesome picture of Christ clearly shows the price that God payed for the LOVE of us. Seeing a crucified Christ, makes me love God more and more
I guess I'm still trying to understand why you have an issue with other videos featuring this song. What graven images are you referring to again? Are they the pictures of Jesus on the cross? 'Cause, if so, it's kind of a big deal for us, as fellow Believers in Christ to remember what He did for us, the suffering He Himself put Himself through.
Also, if I am misunderstanding then please correct me, but aren't you assigning an image for our Lord at the end by comparing Him to a mighty lion?
i dont think hes comparing Him to a lion, but he showed (how ever u spell that im not sure O_O) many other pictures of Gods creation and maybe that was just part of it 2 :D
MATTHEW..How much Biblical studies do u have in Hebrew and Chaldean, Koine Greek.I see that u miss the hole meaning of scriptures..God is not a liar..Gen 2:17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die,and they did..Not physically.but spirituality..,the sin debt needs to be paid,So God came down here to make a way for us through the seed of a women. By the Holy spirit...thus u have The Father,Son and Holy spirit.
There is no God. There is no Holy Spirit. There is no Jesus Christ. Enjoy stoning your children and beating your slaves. The New Testament is better anyways, it has dragons at the end *spoiler*.
My apologies for sounding foolish, but do you take everything in the Bible literally? Also, I tend to be disturbed and angry with parents who indoctrinate their trusting children into a religion, basically because they are awarded for saying simple religious things that the parents agree with, until they actually understand what they are saying and then their religion was never their choice. But hey, I care for the abused kids. I'm not going to do anything, just make an angry Youtube comment.
I think that this is a way of showing and reminding us what Jesus went through for us. Do you also disagree with movies about the Bible and Jesus? For all those are are images. Let me know
I usually listen to great preaching, read the scriptures and theological books as a reminder of what Jesus went through for us. I am opposed to any movie which depicts Jesus.
@bberchin I agree to a certain extent. Movies which depict Christ are misleading - they provide an image of Christ which is not even in keeping with His own standards - "It is a shame for a man to have long hair" for one. However, there are some movies I have seen about Christ's ministry here on earth where the actor portraying Christ was simply that - an actor. It wasn't trying to tell us we should start bowing down to some movie character, it's just showing through that the work of Christ.
Beautiful singing and I agree on not making earhtly images of a Heavenly Saviour. I would have liked this more, though, had you chosen a less beaty music (sort of the same as making graven images in my opinion.) But your daughter sounds great!
No. Those are descriptive and sometimes anthropomorphic words used to illustrate a truth. Forming an image of our Lord is sinful as the 2nd commandment says.
I'm right there with you on that but I'm not sure cross's are right either. I really like this song too. I listened to many and enjoyed your daughters singing as much as anyone's tell Her great job !!! :)
and shell fish are also an abomination to god according to the old testiment. Its either all true or not at all. lets not pick and choose. And lets not interpret with a human mind and force those interpretations on others. This is called ' oral law, which was never commanded. only the written law.
I would like to point out that the context of what is being commanded does not completely rule out pictures of Christ, or God. The verse says that you are to have no graven image made unto yourself. I noticed that you have a picture drawn in crayon behind you on the vid. Graven image my friend. If any picture of Christ as a man is a graven image, so is the picture your daughter drew. We are not to make for ourselves an object of worship. I love the song by the way.
Yes, but notice that Exodus is the Old Testiment and we are no longer under the law. (Read Romans 6:14, Romans 7:4, Galatians 5:18, Galatians 3:24-25, Corinthians 3:11-13, Colossians 2:14.) So remember there IS a possibility (unless you can find scripture in the New Testiment) that it IS okay to have paintings of Jesus. But personally I don't just in case. Your daughter has a beautiful voice!
We may not be under the law, but we are still expected to love and obey the law. In other words, we are not condemned by the law any longer as believers, but we strive to live it out as proof of what we are and as thanksgiving and obedience to God.
I really agree with you on the paintings and such but I'm just curious..... Is it wrong for a Christian to watch movies like The Passion Of The Christ?
I'm not going to tell you that you can't watch it, but I'll tell you that I've never seen it and I never will for many reasons- one of those is the reason I spoke to in this video.
I'm glad to see so many who agree. I was worried I was going out on a limb with too many people here. I do think it's clear and I'm glad others see that. God bless.
Thanks Brett for sharing about not making any graven images to do with God, I agree with what you shared because it is scriptral. I loved the music, your daughter has a nice singing voice. God bless both of you.
You read something about the Roman soldiers offending the Jews with their images by which I assume you meant the eagle and said it was an abomination when set up in the temple. Is this related, in your understanding, to the abomination of desolation mentioned in Matt, Mark, and Luke?RLJ
"I also put up this song as a message to all those who make music videos and use graven images of Christ. Exodus 20:4 is clear in forbidding such an act."
Doesnt Exodus also command believers to put to death homosexuals and those that work on the Sabbath?
stagism... true to form. Thanks for the compliment and I excercise my right not to answer your question on the grounds that I don't want to get into that- I'm tired. ;)
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!THAT WAS BEAUTIFUL, I LOVE IT AND THOSE LYRICS................THOSE LYRICS PIERCE THE SOUL!!!also u r right about the graven image, thats a commandment not to do, God will bless u for doin this the right way. if u see the view count go up suddenly, it was me lol. great job
It's funny that you should post this - I had just made a video of this using scenic photos and lyrics and now u beat me to it. ;)
Seriously it's a good song - it originated here in England with a Reformed Charismatic group called Newfrontiers with one of their worship leaders called Stuart Townend. I heard the first live performance here in England and have the CD from that performance.
Charismatic and Reformed, eh? Never heard those two terms together to describe one group! I'd still like to see your video, only it won't have my daughters beautiful voice on it! (Sorry, proud daddy!)
Yup, they're Reformed Charismatics. There's a group in the US called Sovereign Grace Ministries who are also Reformed and Charismatic - then of course there is John Piper - who is clearly confused [LOL], being Baptist, Calvinist and Charismatic.
The video will be up tomorrow, Lord willing, though not with your daughter's sublime voice.

There is a youtube-video in German (title: Wie tief muss Gottes Liebe sein) and the only thing you see is an empty cross and the text of the song.
One could discuss about the way it is sung, but at least: no images from Christ. :)

We acknowledge that God is almighty and can not be represented by images, but Jesus DID come as 100% man and 100% God. I do not think that showing images of Jesus as man reduces him. But yes, if we worship the image itself then yes that is wrong.
Thats what i think.

Vash14er 2 years ago 2
i dont think hes comparing Him to a lion, but he showed (how ever u spell that im not sure O_O) many other pictures of Gods creation and maybe that was just part of it 2 :D

This is one of the most foolish and childish comments I've seen on my videos- congratulations.
bberchin 2 years ago
i agree
ceoc4 2 years ago
My apologies for sounding foolish, but do you take everything in the Bible literally? Also, I tend to be disturbed and angry with parents who indoctrinate their trusting children into a religion, basically because they are awarded for saying simple religious things that the parents agree with, until they actually understand what they are saying and then their religion was never their choice. But hey, I care for the abused kids. I'm not going to do anything, just make an angry Youtube comment.

....... wow wtheck r u talking about? sharing God's love with kids is abusing them? wow ur messed up. get ur mind right!

I think that this is a way of showing and reminding us what Jesus went through for us. Do you also disagree with movies about the Bible and Jesus? For all those are are images. Let me know
oyioyioi 2 years ago
I usually listen to great preaching, read the scriptures and theological books as a reminder of what Jesus went through for us. I am opposed to any movie which depicts Jesus.
bberchin 2 years ago
@bberchin I agree to a certain extent. Movies which depict Christ are misleading - they provide an image of Christ which is not even in keeping with His own standards - "It is a shame for a man to have long hair" for one. However, there are some movies I have seen about Christ's ministry here on earth where the actor portraying Christ was simply that - an actor. It wasn't trying to tell us we should start bowing down to some movie character, it's just showing through that the work of Christ.

Great song. And your daughter has a beautiful voice.

Beautiful singing and I agree on not making earhtly images of a Heavenly Saviour. I would have liked this more, though, had you chosen a less beaty music (sort of the same as making graven images in my opinion.) But your daughter sounds great!

I agree. Thanks for this video and song.

So when the Bible speaks of Jesus as a man, or as a lamb or as the Rock does that mean we also should not have pictures of those things?
potcmf4j 2 years ago
No. Those are descriptive and sometimes anthropomorphic words used to illustrate a truth. Forming an image of our Lord is sinful as the 2nd commandment says.
bberchin 2 years ago

Your daughter has a beautiful voice!

good point....
Calvinist4Christ 3 years ago
We may not be under the law, but we are still expected to love and obey the law. In other words, we are not condemned by the law any longer as believers, but we strive to live it out as proof of what we are and as thanksgiving and obedience to God.
bberchin 3 years ago
That was so wonderful... I sent it to one of my friends :D

You read something about the Roman soldiers offending the Jews with their images by which I assume you meant the eagle and said it was an abomination when set up in the temple. Is this related, in your understanding, to the abomination of desolation mentioned in Matt, Mark, and Luke?RLJ
Blogrich55 3 years ago
Yes, in fact, MATTHEW Henry (not Patrick, duh) cites those verses.
bberchin 3 years ago
"I also put up this song as a message to all those who make music videos and use graven images of Christ. Exodus 20:4 is clear in forbidding such an act."
Doesnt Exodus also command believers to put to death homosexuals and those that work on the Sabbath?
That being said, nice song. (:

It's funny that you should post this - I had just made a video of this using scenic photos and lyrics and now u beat me to it. ;)
Seriously it's a good song - it originated here in England with a Reformed Charismatic group called Newfrontiers with one of their worship leaders called Stuart Townend. I heard the first live performance here in England and have the CD from that performance.
YoungCalvinist08 3 years ago
Charismatic and Reformed, eh? Never heard those two terms together to describe one group! I'd still like to see your video, only it won't have my daughters beautiful voice on it! (Sorry, proud daddy!)
bberchin 3 years ago
Yup, they're Reformed Charismatics. There's a group in the US called Sovereign Grace Ministries who are also Reformed and Charismatic - then of course there is John Piper - who is clearly confused [LOL], being Baptist, Calvinist and Charismatic.
The video will be up tomorrow, Lord willing, though not with your daughter's sublime voice.
