  • I just can't get too syncopated whilst doing the bass drum pattern!! so annoying

  • @martinmedeski play Syncopation over the pattern, or learn Alan Dawson's Ritual!

  • Find the mistake between 1:55 and 2:00!

Anyway, I'm just moaning. I wouldn't dare dreaming ever being that good.

I'm still working on the bossa nova =D

  • @Fantasticifaction No snare?

  • what kind of drumset are you using on the video?

  • the bass drum is the old cliche samba. the surdos in rio are doing something else now, since the 80's...try to get next to an escola da samba in rio de janeiro, like mangueira...

  • @aedyisoenne : constructive correction: Samba = Brazillian, Clave = Cuban

There are Clave-LIKE rhythms in samba, but don't call them clave! You'll get into a fight in cuba! ;-)

  • Lol I think you readed his comment slightly wrong.

"give it more feel instead of just executing the necessary clave/rhythms " he means maybe the snare rim clicky :D?

anyway the vid is very helpful for people too bad it isnt helping me now because I know that....

  • @PhilipDrumz constructive correction: claves are also instruments used in brazilian music and you can call the rhythms that the clave player plays, "clave rhythms". So shut the fuck up and stop talking like you know shit.

  • @SeriousPieEnthusiast Yes! And if you vomit "on top" of a cake, you can call it "cake topping".. But I wouldn't eat it! Anyway, nice video!

  • tight free lesson.. let him do his thing hater..

  • there anint many good teachers out there but i think your one of the best ive seen on the internet

  • wow. amazed my friend. i thought i was a pretty darn good drummer until i found your videos. this makes me 8000000 times more interested in exploring different styles, especially jazz oriented drumming.

  • dude, i need help , the thing about samba is there's basically only a few types of samba beats are there? because i wanna learn this genre but like i want to know all the types of samba techniques, perhaps you can 1 day post lessons so u can teach me and alot of others who are willing to learn?

  • thank you very much tim=), its a very big help to me and the others also=)

  • wow...that is some intense drumming right there. i can play up to the ride but good god after that! haha

  • Amazing!

  • here in brazil, basicaly, there are two ways to play samba jazz. One is taken the tamborim figure in right hand and the other is to take 16 notes, even in fast tempos. Check out Edu Ribeiro or Celso Almeida another aproach in samba feel. Abraço

  • daaamn, he's good

  • I have seen all your videos and they are so good. A question if I may. How do you tune your bass drum, which heads do you use? Is there any muffling? It seems that you don't bury the beater and you play heel down... I'm asking because I have just bouht a Gretsch be bop size drums and I mess with the 18 bass drum (always played 22 before)...

  • I love you ! Haha, I've always wondered how it feels like to play jazz, but I didn't know how to - but your vids are really great! I'm definately learning well. ;D Love ALL your videos! Thanks for everything !

  • love it....very cool video....you're such a great guy...keep it up!!!

  • Tim do you tune your toms top and bottom to the same pitch. Also do you try to tune to specific notes. If so what are they. You get a great sound and your feel is excellant. Are the toms a fourth apart. thanks so much

  • Thanks so much for your complements! My answer to this question is not a typical one. I just tune till it sounds good. I usually have my bottom head tuned a little higher than the top, and then I mess with the top head until I get a sound I am happy with. My ear naturally tunes the toms either a P4 or P5 apart. Don't know why, it has been like that my whole life. Hope this helps.

    Tim

  • @tim481 The P4 and P5 are basically the same interval. It just depends on which note you hear as the tonic. You probably tune them like that since the P5 is the first and strongest harmonic which means it's a more solid, versatile interval.

  • What do you think about samba rhythm with accented triplets on ride cymbal?

    I far prefer such way.

Anyway I find that if samba is very very fast, is easy to lose the coordination of feet "ostinato" and right hand.

So you prefer to play quarter beats instead of accented triplets.

    Is it correct?

  • Nice job.. well presented, enthusiastic & positive.

  • Dude thankyou so much! please keep doing what you do :)

  • I love the sound of your kit. Your tom sound is amazing.

  • You should do more videos like this, like taking latin patterns and showing how they could be used in standard applicatiob.

  • Is that a vault ride?

  • Yup 22" artisan light w/two rivets on the right and 20" on the left
