@RMYak54 HEY MAN, I DID TRY WHAT YOU HAD TOLD ME BUT I STILL COULDN'T GET HER TO CRANK OR DO ANYTHING. SO I JUST TOOK IT BACK OFF 'AGAIN' AN NOW IT'S ON HER WAY 'BACK' TO HORIZON. :-/ BUT I'LL BE SURE TO KEEP YOU UP TO DATE AN SEE HOW SHE WORKS OUT WHEN I GET HER BACK. :-)
Oh ok. Yeah...i took the plug out the other day and put it on the side of the engine and turned it over but i couldn't see no spark coming from the plug and i know the batt was good bc it was reading 7.28 on a 7.4 Fromco. But i will give it another try tomorrow. I was fixing to take the dang thang BACK OFF..AGAIN :-/ an send it back but i am going to try what you have told me first. If u want to man you can hit me back on my email at sergeantsteamer at aol dot com.
I am using the CH ignition because I had problems with the Saito ign. I don't think you can get the CH ign. any longer. You could try another brand if the Saito ign. gives you problems. Your engine should run pretty good from the beginning but just need some tweaking. If it is running poorly I would assume the Saito ign. is bad.
But no one has told me to start the low speed side at 4 turns IN from flush with the arm. Every time i'v call Horizon Hobby about it..they've told me 1 to 1-1/4 out on the high side and 4 turns OUT. BUT, 4 turns OUT will not ever crank it. So I'm gonna give that four turns in from flush a try. Lol. Thank for ur help sir!
Thank you ALOT sir! I will give this a try and hopefully this will get it running AGAIN. LOL. i'v already had to send it back after the FIRST flight on the engine. It locked up on me right after it touched down. :-/ That was over a year ago and it hasn't been right every since. BUT, i haven't really messed with it that much since then bc i'v had ALOT going on this past year.
The location of your gas tank should be as close as possible to the carb with the clunk line about even (level) with the carb. Also, see if you have a punch mark near the HS needle - this indicates Saito's newer carb that is modified from original. I installed a Perry pump so I would not have to worry so much about location of the tank.
If you follow the updated manual it should give you an idea for tuning. I think the HS needle starts at 1 1/4 open and the LS 4 turns in from flush with control arm.
Set the HS first WOT. Get max RPM's then open a little to drop rpm's 100-200. With an APC 16x6 prop you should be around 8800 rpm. Once HS is set adjust your LS. Set idle to about 2500 rpm. From idle open throttle quickly to half way; if engine dies right away open LS 10 min, if engine hesitates then picks up lean it by turning in 10 min. Once LS is set go back and check the HS. The FG 20 is sensitive and tricky to adjust. The Saito ignition for this engine was not reliable for me.
I didn't have to re-time the engine. The hall effect senson is slotted so it fits right in the same spot as the original Saito sensor. You just need to work a little with spacers for correct clearance between the magnet and the sensor. Pretty simple.
Thanks! I started to mess with the CG the other day and it seemed I had to add almost 14 oz. to the nose to get the plane balanced. I have the same engine as you (same plane). My ignition is on top of firewall. The batt is right behind gas tank. I'm going to mess with it again tomorrow. I'm going to try lifting the plane from the wing tips to see if that makes a difference. My rear servos are chunky but they shouldnt weigh down the plane that much..... any tips on what I might be doing wrong?
I have my ignition and battery in the space behind the firewall. It is a tight fit but you can do it. You want to keep all wires related to the ignition at least 10 in from any servo wires or your receiver. With the FG 20 on that plane I added 4 oz. under the firewall area directly under the battery and ignition. You should be ok if you do that. Make sure your gas tank is empty when checking the balance. I have Futaba servos. There shouldn't be much difference as you say. I hope this helps.
Did you have to add a lot of weight to front of this plane to setup the CG?? The Horizon update says 7-8cm from leading edge of wing where it meets fuse....
The original manual said the CG was 7-8cm from the leading edge wing TIP. I balanced it that way and it was very tail heavy and easy to lose control. I kept adjusting the weight to where it flew more stable. Seagull finally posted an update that the correct CG is as you say, 7-8 cm from the edge of the wing where it meets the fuselage. I have the FG 20 in it with battery and ignition. I added about 4 oz under the firewall. It is now stable. Great plane.
Yes, I had problems. I sent my engine to Horizon for service and they replaced the ignition. The new ignition worked for a short time and quit. At that point I decided to go with the CH ignition. The engine seems to run great now.
what size spinner do you have on it?

SWEET!!!! i'v got one but I can't seem to get it running right. Could you maybe tell me where you have your HIGH & LOW speed nettle settings at?
Thanks, Chad

did you have to re-time the engine or reposition the hall effect sensor when you converted to a CH ignition

What prop size are you using?

I am running it with an APC 16x6 prop. I think most others find this prop size to be good for this engine.

have you had any problems with this engine as i have hear a lot of bad reports with bad running etc.
Is the CH ignition standard with this motor
