im pretty sure that just adding the turbo wouldnt add much horsepower, however it would make it a bit more efficient. i dont think you would see any significant gains untill you changed some govenor springs. changing those tiny springs can change your peak torque and rpm. you could potentiallly raise the horsepower by 50 or more horsepower conservatively by doing that and maybe some other injector pump componets.
From 1965 thru 1969, they had the hydraulic controls on the left side of the dash. Beginning in 1970, when they started making the 4320, 4620 and 6030, they put the hydraulics on the console on the right side of the seat.
I never knew that the pto lever was located on the dash. Was that an option if you had the side mounted hydraulics? My uncle has a 3020 and my father has a 3010 and they both have the dash mounted hydraulic/3pt levels and the pto is located on the left along the side of the dash.
I can't remember years or after what serial numbers. But the first couple of years of production the 20 series had hydraulics on the dash and the PTO on the left. After 67 or 68 the hydraulics were moved to the right side of the seat on its own console. Then the PTO control was moved to the dash
@corrysewell i dont think this 4020 has a typical setup. most have the controls where you said, this looks like its set up for a loader. i think id rather have that setup so i didnt have to reach for the hydraulics when im baling or mowing.
@MrReinacher: Side console controls (next to the seat on the right) was the typical setup for all the 1969-1972 models. Pre-1969 had the 3pt and hydraulic controls in the left side of the dash console.
@SuperJohndeere4020 : About 110 - 115 max. I used to own a 1966 4020 with an M&W turbo kit. So, I KNOW, unlike some of the retards on here (like farmboi27).
how many hours does it have our 4320 has 9400 or so and has never been rebuilt all weve put into is fresh oil and a few fuel filters now and then but thats its worn out a set of tires already and that tells you nothing runs like a deere our neighbor has a 930 case less hours has been rebuilt twice and still dont run right hes thinkin of buyin a 4620 or a 5020 and gettin rid of that heap of orange trash
Makes me miss my Dad's ol '66' 4020 powershift. The injector pump was getting a little sloppy but she still ran quite well.Brought in alot of firewood with that ol tractor.
Thank you for the great comments. I sold this tractor a few months back and every time I view this video, it makes me feel like I did a big mistake. I may offer to buy it back. Great tractor!
@azrios ya, buy it back if u can, those tractors will never quit, there the best u can buy, i have a couple friends who have them and they stand by there 4020's always, they love them, and i do to, so u need to buy it back
@azrios : Yeah, I bet you are kicking yourself now... GREAT tractor, especially with the add-on aftermarket turbo kit (I'd bet it was an M&W turbo kit.) I had a 1966 with an M&W kit and also a hydraulic front 4x4 assist. Stupidest thing I ever did was sell my 4020. BTW, the 1969-1972 side console 4020's are worth a fortune now, especially once rebuilt/refurbished! Find another and never let her go - that's my goal.
A few years back I used to work for a farmer he had a 70's 4020 diesel with the synchro that I loved like no f'ing other to drive. watching this makes me wanna go get one.
nothin like it i know our 71' 4320 you start in 6th get up to 2200 then drop it into 8th and when you hit the foot throttle you get a shot of black smoek out the muffler and the front end lifts up a bit no other feeling especially when you have 11 bales on the wagon behind you oh man makes me wanna drive her right now
@6030diesel : taps into exisiting ports on the engine. If you want to know "specifically", I can't tell you anymore, as I no longer have my 4020 turbo diesel tractor. I do still have a M&W 4020 Turbo Kit Owner's Manual though, so I might find out in the information in the book. Let me know if you really need to know. (I'm sure you could figure it out if you had to.)
thats a syncro right there and if youre gonna drive a tractor with one you better know how because that kills a beginer there! i remember when i was 4 or 5 and i started driving my john deere 4000...talk about hell to shift that thing
same here i learned to drive on a 4000 and those things were a bitch to shift. i wold miss gears or i couldnt get it into gear but it was a great tractor.
Just to set the record straight -the 4000's were syncronized transmissions just like the 4020's. I've worked at a John Deere dealership since 1996 and have had both tractors apart in the shop. There are subtle differences in the two tractors - lack of battery covers on the 4000 as well as different final drives and rear axles which were lighter in the 4000's. If they weren't syncronized transmissions John Deere wouldn't have called them 'syncro-range' transmissions.
@nardp96 : Only because one of two reasons. One, your 4000's shifter linkage was all worn out and sloppy due to high hours, or Two, you were a retard and you just don't know how to shift a tractor.
@superturbodiesel i hope you relies i was about 7 or 8 when i learned to drive on this so yes it was harder when i was younger. actually we ended up splitting the tractor and replacing the linkage and clutch plate due to high hours when i was about 12. now it shifts like a dream and still runs perfectly fine. it never misses gears or grinds with the new parts.
@allenjanoch: It's a synchronized transmission (AKA: Synchro-Shift), found on the vast majority of John Deere's built in the 1960's and 1970's used in the __10 & __20 series Row-Crop, High-Crop, & Standard tractors, known as the "New Generation" of JD power. Exceptions would be the optional hydraulic clutch pack shifted Power-Shift tranny (similar to the synchro in location of shift lever only) & the vastly different Utility-Series of tractors from that era (like a JD 820, 1020, 2020, etc.).
i got a 4020 my grandpa got new he ordered it from the dealer wiht a turbo off of a 4520 and the intercooler was installed later on all they did was cut a slot in the hood and make a shroud around the intercooler it was just as powerfull wiht a sycrorange trans as a 4620 wiht a powershift
@6030diesel: Your tractor is known as the "Super 4020", a production JD tractor with the 404 JD diesel and a JD prodction turbo setup. The 4320 was the 4020's "big brother" and was also a GREAT tractor.
thanks for the video,my uncle Don who passed away in 1998 had two. It brings back good memories.

How much horsepower with a turbo?
SuperJohndeere4020 2 years ago
our 4010 with turbo 404 and turned up pump makes 180 a regular idle, turned up idle at abou 1700 makes about 350 or 400

4000's did not syncronizers is the tranny like a 4020, you had to be at a complete stop. Cost savings measures to compete with the IH 704
