Get some steel wool and rub it across the leads of a 9 volt battery. Good way to start a fire in the wildy wild if you don't have dry matches and don't feel like rubbing sticks together.

i would think those are usefull when you CANT get kindling and wood to build a fire with, like mabye a desert situation or something where theres little to no foliage around. thats why it burns so long, if i did have materials for a fire, keeping a flint starter would be hela more useful than keeping a pack of those things.

@roosterman556 well for a little practice tip, rather than spinning the stick like you normally see, you should stroke kind into the wood as though you were digging a hole.try to get as much surface area as possible in 3-5 inch strokes with your stick.this can be done by cutting a wedge out of the wood if you have a knife and going lengthways along the wedge with your stick. and of course, have your kindling and fibers ready because you are going to have to really build it from smoky embers.

@lwkleijn Interesting question. Although a zombie can see a fire/smoke, most studies say that it will not galvanize a zombie. What may attract the zombie, unfortunately, is a large number of humans around a fire, or if the wind blows natural body odor towards said zombie.

@lwkleijn well i guess alot of a zombies tracking skills come down to smell so maybe if you were cooking... buut its always a good idea to light a fire in a survival situation so you can boil water(to avoid disease) and so you have a good light and heat source. (i wouldnt want to get caught out if my torch runs out of battery)

You can get Magnesium Flint Strikes. They work when wet all you need in a good tinder. I've found cotton wool to be the best tinder with a flint strike or some type of fuel works well too.

I have many of the Flint strikes i even have 1 that comes on my Gerber Survival Knife. They are really useful to carry around when out.

@aliksander94 I live on the edge of a city built in the crater of a small mountain (2200ft) surrounded by open bushland. I plan to live rural on a smaller mountain close by that has only one path between mountains and requires human coordination to scale. Cattle ponds are nearby so I'll have water (I know three methods of purification). I'll still keep a smaller camp in a house on the fringe and loot from there. The biggest worry is fires being seen from edge lookouts.
