hm. i've never seen orig karate kid, but i kind of like the orig final fight scene better. the tournament shots in the new one are edited so much that it's sometimes hard to follow. this one just looks like a real tournament. the newer one is def more flashy.  then again, it could just be because it's kung fu which in itself it's "prettier" than karate.

i always wondered why johnny all of the sudden had a conscience at the end of the movie when the sensi tells him to "sweep the leg." he treated daniel like trash throughout the movie and did far worse things than that, but then at the end he all of the sudden doesn't feel comfortable taking out daniel's leg? just an observation.

He had seen Daniel fight hard and well in the previous matches, and Johnny was also probably suprised/impressed that Daniel came back out with an injured leg to fight him. Even though he still didn't like Daniel, I think he respected him enough by this point to try to win the match honorably until his sensei made him do otherwise. Also, he may have been confident enough to think he could win without resorting to nasty tactics.

They came down on him for "Illegal contact" or something when he hurt Dan's leg, but they never made that call on any of his other hits, so how were they invalid? I'm confused as hell.

You're right, Johnny actually hit Daniel 4 times (and only one of them should have been illegal) You've got the one at 2:10, the next at 2:33 (the ref then states the score is 2-2, meaning they both need one more point, the final at 3:16 (a face punch, pretty sure I can hear one of the referee's in the background saying "that's allowed" they then state the next point is the winner, despite them earlier saying it was 2-2). If the last Johnny punch was illegal so should have been Dan's Crane kick.
