why can't they make computers the way they did before, heavy duty, and charge more, we will have a longer lasting product for more money, but in the long run we will save money because we won't have to replace the parts that are these days really fragile
@YKoz3 - It's a gamble really. Technology changes too rapidly for a company to invest too much on something that's going to be outdated in a few months. Although, I do agree with you 100% because it would be nice to have something that's able to last. Case in point, I have an old 486 machine from the 90s that still works like it did when I bought it. I even have an Apple IIgs that still boots up a good game of Raster Blaster! :)
You answered your own question: "in the long run we will save money" if you save money in the long run the manufacturers are making less. Disposable products are more profitable. That said I too would love hardware that lasts longer. and you are right, many PC's made in the 80's and early 90's still work to this day!
@zoomiefog I think that's how Dell and HP and others are working. They make cheap ass computers that break down soon so you go back and buy another. I know a friend whose mother would get him a new laptop about every 3-5 months because they keep sucking. Meanwhile, I've had this Mac Mini since 2004.
@YKoz3 So you want a computer that will just work without worrying about switching parts, charge more, and in the long run actually costs less? That sounds like Macintosh to me. Hear me out. . . they build a more stable OS that doesn't kill your internals in order to run, you don't have to worry about switching parts for 10 years, because chances are, it will still work, and it's physically more durable thanks to its unibody build.
@YKoz3 They engineer them to fail shortly after the warranty and either jack up parts prices or make parts unavailable - that way every 2 to 3 yrs you get sucked into a new machine and MS gets another OS license fee. Thats why the industry wants machines cheap enough it's cheaper to replace than repair and why they having people thinking their 4 yr old machine is junk (if it lasted that long).
Yeah, i was always impressed with how slow the BIOS is at putting text on the screen. It checks to see what kind of video card it has for every stinkin' character—just in case it was suddenly hot-swapped out in the intervening nanoseconds.
They managed to make a 4.77MHz computer slower than a 1MHz Apple II at screen output.
I still have an IBM XT 4.77MHz /w AST EGA 256KB video card, 640KB RAM, 144MB MFM HDD. 23 years old and still works perfectly! Made with heavy steel not plastic.
Easy man, The computer came with a CGA 4KB video card. I upgraded to the 256KB AST EGA video card it the late 80's. If you don't believe me.. well.. I'm sorry.
I have 6 of the original 5150 PCs with cassette port, 5 5160 XTs and probably a dozen 5170 ATs, all working and like new with their original keyboards and monitors. This video is of a Sanyo MBC-550/555 silver box of crap - had one and know what a junker it is/was. I ran a Fido BBS on one w/ 4 floppy drives then ran a college BBS on a 5170 AT with 2 ST-225 20mb hard drives. Now there's more wasted on partitioning than 20mb.
@Dant2142 Dunno, they never came out with drives to go with the cassette port. I've used cassette on other platforms like C64/128, Atari, etc but that was BASIC being loaded. Not sure what the drive designation for a cassette drive would be if IBM had come out with them.
@rhblakeman Well from the other people I've heard you could use the same adapter as the ZX Spectrum to hook them up, but they never said what drive letter they would be. XD
@Dant2142 Probably so but when floppy drives then hard drives and controllers came along it pretty much killed a need for cassette drives. Even with the Commodore collectors many have ported cassette based software to their floppy drives. Cassette is slow
