• Animation question for those more knowledgeable than myself: What is with all the backgrounds in a few Season 1 episodes with gradient colors? So many walls are a color on one end and dissolve into white in the middle or at the other end.
Wow, how different they were!! I hate it how nowadays,at least in my country, Fox only seems to show episodes from season 15 onwards in the re-runs :\ I mean, how long has it been since we last watched one of this? I miss them T_T it eminds me of my childhood, when I would laugh at anything bart did, and I had to ask my parents to explain lots and lots of things to me XD
@paratrooper504 And there are plenty of people who miss the 80s, 70s, 60s, 50s, and 40s. Not to quote South Park, but I think that growing old means moving forward while at the same time being nostalgic for days long past. I miss the 90s too. But I can't turn back time to the days when all our TVs were box designed and the internet was a mere twinkle in the eye of computer companies. There are plenty of good things that came out of that time, just as we have plenty of good things from this time.
in my personal opinion homer has lost its magic, like the other characters that's why i prefer the shorts and the 3 first seasons where Homer was funny and also had a cruel part. However the simpsons were pretty good until the 15th season, i mean they were amazing, but when the 17th season started the show lost its special thing. Meanwhile the 16th season i think it was a transition between the good and the bad simpsons, that's why i think it's time to end the show
When this show first came out, I wonder how they originally thought it would last. I bet everybody thought this show would only run for like 2-3 years.Yet now it's been 20 years and still running.
Of course, when this promo aired, no one could possibly have imagined that the show would conquer the world. This is a real piece of television history.
I have this promo, along with the Simpsons Christmas special, recorded on a VHS somewhere in my house, but I haven't been able to find it. It's good to see it again!
The first episode I saw was the one where Bart darn near failed the 4th grade and prayed to God that he could have more time to study, so God made it snow. Was that in the first season?
Yes.... the episode "Simpsons Roasting On An Open Fire" premiered first on December 17, 1989.... Which followed by the episode "Bart the Genius" on 1/14/90.
As a side note.... (quite funny).... in Season 1 episode 3 titled "Homer's Odyssey" is the ONLY episode in the whole series where Smithers is black.
heres a fun fact when matt groneing went on the tracy ullman show he was going to show them his idea for his bunny he drew but 5min befor the meeting he found out that then fox would own his bunnys so then he came up with the simpsons and named them all after his family execpt bart he just made up the name so thank the tracy ullman show for useing the simpsons give thumbs up
Disney was making the Oswald cartoons for Universal under producer Charles Mintz. Mintz was the one who went behind Disney's back and stole his staff from him, arranging to have Oswald produced under his own outfit instead.
The lesson Disney took away from that was to never work for anyone else again, and to always retain to the rights to his own work. He kept that personal vow for the rest of his life.
@Marbles471 Yeah, but if Mintz hadn't interfered, Disney World might have been called Mintz World and instead of Mickey being the symbol, Oswald could have been.
Of course, if your work is sub-par, it's probably better to work for someone else than yourself, otherwise your business is just going to fail. Woody Allen decided to control his own films after an experience similar to Disney's I believe.
The Simpsons used to be a show all about Bart's adventures, but then I think parents complained that it was a bad influence on kids and changed it to the entire family's show although its mainly Homer.
@MysticArksRevenge I don't think it was really soccer moms that made Homer become more funny, I just think that's how the character naturally evolved as the episodes got better and the writing got more sophisticated. Making Homer funnier and more stupid gave the writers a lot more room for good gags centered around him.
I think he became way TOO stupid, though. It got to the point where he wasn't believable as a human being anymore. Though I think in the last couple of years they've begun to pull back a little bit and make him a bit more human again.
I wish he had stayed the way he was around the third season. Dumb, but also still believable as an adult with authority over his kids. Today, Homer being an man-child makes Bart's identity as a "problem child" just seem redundant and forced.
thing was that they were going to use "Some Enchanted Evening" as the premiere episode, however the staff at Fox wasn't happy about how the episode has been animated, and they even considered aborting it until they chose to move S.E.E. to a later date, and use the Christmas special in 1989 as the first episode.
Thank you so much for posting this! At the time I was an obsessed fan. I love all of these series premiere spots and Christmas episode spots everybody has on youtube.
They weren't always on on Sundays. They started off there and they're there now, but somewhere in the early 90s for a few seasons, they came on Thursdays, opposite The Cosby Show. It's what did The Cosby Show in...I don't know why they moved it back to Sundays but I'm glad, I always liked it better there.
I think only one episode topped the Cosby show during when they were on Thursdays. The Simpsons were there top viewed show and back then the Cosby show was a killer to all the other shows in that time slot. Fox back then were just a little baby station just starting out. Bill Cosby was never offended by the ratings wars. They mentioned it on the season 2 I believe dvd set.
Heh, it's funny to hear the original voice for Homer again. He hadn't quite evolved (or devolved for that matter) into the "idiot" voice we know him for today.
