All throughout history, people have tried to find flaws in the church (I think the Bible refers to them as being Pharisees). My guess is that it will continue because it's human nature to be condescending towards something that they're skeptical of. If you base the essence of Christianity on something negative you see in the church today, then you'll be negative and skeptical. What you don't understand is one word - GRACE.
Having grown up with a church background, so many people have turned against Christianity because they felt church was a place of hypocrisy. Last time I checked, the whole world is full of hypocrisy. Church is the 'body of Christ'. So as long as you believe and love in God, I pray that you go back to 'Church'. Yes there are sinners and people who have given a bad name to church and christianity in the world. But we are all sinners and as long as we live in this world we will be tempted and drawn to sin. We still sin as Christians and it's why we need God every day. It's why we need church - to be accountable for one another.
Jesus taught us to Forgive. Forgive as He forgave us. It's so hard to forgive people we trust in, especially fellow Christians. But perhaps that's God's test for us. Can we forgive people, like Michael who we trusted so much in?
Perhaps God is telling us that even though pastors and leaders of the Church are seen as more 'holy' than others, they too are human. No one - not even church leaders - is perfect and holy like God. And so as long as they're human they will sin.

it is true that perhaps he should have been more truthful about his problems to his church when he was appointed a pastor. However, this is not to say that pastor don't make mistakes. A 'huge deception' and a small deception is STILL a deception. Nothing makes a deception 'huge' except for how much you place your values or trust in it. Regardless of what his sickness was, cancer or pornography addiction, I just want to say weeks before this news exploded, hundreds of people at National Youth Convention in Charlotte, NC in 2008 rededicated their lives, or even accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior to this song. The lyrics speak to me and I listen to this and lead to this song at my youth group merely every week. The lyrics still speak to me, whether he faked cancer or not. Give him a break.

Jesus taught us to Forgive. Forgive as He forgave us. It's so hard to forgive people we trust in, especially fellow Christians. But perhaps that's God's test for us. Can we forgive people, like Michael who we trusted so much in?
Perhaps God is telling us that even though pastors and leaders of the Church are seen as more 'holy' than others, they too are human. No one - not even church leaders - is perfect and holy like God. And so as long as they're human they will sin.

it is true that perhaps he should have been more truthful about his problems to his church when he was appointed a pastor. However, this is not to say that pastor don't make mistakes. A 'huge deception' and a small deception is STILL a deception. Nothing makes a deception 'huge' except for how much you place your values or trust in it. His lie about cancer is a 'huge' deception only because it has reached out to so many and his song was based very much on it.

Today I was on seminnar "Steps to freedom in Christ". We were speaking also about things like this. Many christians don't know how to sieze the freedom that belongs to them. Even the majority of christians are tide up with something (it is not always so big, many things we don't realize-for example we say that we are useless etc). James Bond, just before I go to bed, I thought it would be unfair of me not to address your recent comment. I imagine you will have read Darwin's correspondence in later life where he states his agnosticism and his general reticence on talking about religion (e.g. he didn't want to offend his very religious wife). Darwin became much more of doubter that believer in later life (as seen in his letters), though I concede he did not become an full-blown atheist. All the best.
