A less confusing way of writing the formula is A=(L)(W) or A=(length)x(width)

cm², does that make 10.000m? so the area in the example is in fact 400x10.000m=4.000.000m? Provided we could draw ultrathin lines with an automated continuously selfsharpening pencil, I dare have that hypothesis tested. Or have I overlooked maybe an infinite multiplication problem in my attempt of physically interpreting the square root?

See, you're mistaking cm^2 as a variable, not as a unit of area as compared to cm as a unit of length. Similarly, cm^3 is a unit of volume. They are not variables which themselves can be manipulated mathematically.
