The boy playing Trigger is spot on, James Buckley does a fine job as Del-Boy and does anyone else look at Boycie and say "That's probably what John Challis did look like when he was younger"? I wonder if he did, or could do the laugh.
when exactly do you think this is set? it's the 1960s
lots of blacks were living in britain in the 60s
plus that's Denzil, if he was in only fools and horses he'd logically have been around back then unless he was an immigrant which he wasn't judging from his accent
This show was ok. But I think the choice of actors for Del and Boycie were wrong. Also, the description of Del's mum in 'Only Fools and Horses' was that she was common and a bit tarty. But in Rock and Chips she was portrayed as smart, demure, even quite sophisticated.
I hope they do not make anymore too. I enjoyed Only Fools and Horses too, although I prefer the 80s episodes more than the later shows. But the show pulled in 7 million viewers and the BBC are guaranteed a big audience with any show featuring Del Trotter - do not be surprised if they make more.
She seemed more refined than what Only Fools and Horses led us to believe. The characters in the original show recalled Joan Trotter as a much more brash, loud woman who would go with anyone who bought her a drink. The original show also hints that Del learned some of his dodgy behaviour from his mother; but in Rock and Chips she was more refined, thoughtful, and very decent.
@DavyTom71 I've noticed two other things about her. The first is that the clothes she wears in this are not the same ones that Del and Rodney used to dress up the sex dolls in Danger UXD. The second is that Ann Lynn who played Raquel's mum Audrey in 'Time on out hands' also provided the voice of Joan in that episode when Del took one last look at the flat. Ann Lynn's Joan voice sounded nothing like Kellie Bright's Joan voice in this. Why didn't they get Kellie to voice Joan in time on our hands?
I bet they altered Joan Trotter's character because a BBC committee concluded that it would have been politically incorrect to portray her as a tart. So John Sullivan had to rewrite the show's history and make Joan much smarter and more sophisticated; this was probably done to portray her as a victim of Reg Trotter. But the early shows suggested that she had many affairs and often hit her useless husband
The cast could have been better. Boycie and Del especially. I'm not saying these two are bad actors it's just... this Del doesn't have the look and charm of the only true Del - David Jason. Nice to get back to Peckham again though :D
It wasn't meant to be funny. It was to fill in all the missing gaps in their past that they allude to in OF&H. ie Rodneys Dad etc. I thought it was brilliant. Excellent acting by all the cast and I loved the music.
i thought it was fantastic the story was so gd it was funny not quite as good as only fools and horses but i dont think nothing will ever be as gd as that
What a piece of shit! This had none of the charm of Fools & Horses or even the humor, it wasn't even funny ffs!!!! Thanks for fucking this right up BBC!
Rock and chips was great prequel to Only Fools And Horses if john sullivan had not of done one someone else would and that would of been wrong. As for Nicholas Lyndhurst he is the only one who could of played that part in the 1987 ep (Frog's Legacy) they said he looked like him and then there is the picture you saw in the last only fools if its hadn't of been nick playing him it would not of worked. If there is a series freddy won't be in it for long he blows him self up "what a plonker".
@jwe1275 only inconsistency I spotted was that Boycie didnt think Del knew Jumbo in the classic 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire' , yet in this theyre all say around. Another episode which could spawn from this is Alby's encounter with a train.
I think Only Fools and Horses should have ended with Del and Rodney becoming millionaires . The Green Green Grass had some funny moments but I always felt it was flawed . Rock and Chips seams more of a comedy drama to me than Fools there was nt many laugh out loud moments but once I got past that I actually started to enjoy it for what it was . It ll never match Fools but there is a place for it and I look forward to seeing how a series will pan out .
Agree it should have ended in 96....It was absurd afterwards...The story was built on the Thatcher ideal of getting rich and two london boys making it, why they even thought a xmas special afertwards would work...it was so wooden...leave it there
This is a message to all those people who have been commenting on MOUSEWAGONS comments.. Its not his falt that he is the way he is. The other day he through all his toys out of his pram and they got all dirty, so as you can imagine he is a little upset..so lets feel sorry for that sad minded person whos brain not functioning correctley (Hence the sily swear words...He may come across as a prick, and yes you are one Mousewagon
I absolutely loved 'Rock & Chips' - it was extremely well written and the way 1960 was recreated was brilliant. The story was well conceived and the characterisation top notch. As a fan of OFAH this was great to see Del et all in their youth and I hope they do another one. John Sullivan is a blooming genius!
Im a huge fans of the original, but this was utter wank (in my opinion). I, like the majority of the population, wish they had drawn a line under the whole franchise with "Time on our Hands".
have a day of you mate it was not supossed to be another eposode of ofah it was what it was the story from the begin come on thay did it really well your silly if you think that they would even attempt to try and make a sitcom its not possible because we would just try to compare so thay told a story about freeddie and joan and it was fantastic
@Mousewagon shut the fuck you you ignorant git or I'll smash your face in so shut up it was good so you can't talk sto being a loser this was good shut up or I'll smash your face in.
Ok come and smash my head in, send me a message and we will go from there you sad ficking internet thug, Im sure i wont be the one picking my teeth up cunt.
Here's hoping it's alright. We invest so much in these characters because Del and Rodders and everyone else from Only Fools are like family - so much so that I really want this show to do the business and succeed. As Del always says: he who dares, wins.
Its so awesome, rodney was never good with ladies. But his dad was a playa... :)

I completely agree with that. As I was watching I thought she was nothing like how she was described in the original show.
I think the actors were a bad choice and as a big Only Fools And Horses fan, I gotta say, I hope they don't make any more of this.

John Sullivan was pushing his luck with green green grass, now hes just taking the piss.
Actors unbelievable, wooden, you get better acting in bloody Coronation Street.
Nycolas Lyndhurst - what a complete cunt hes made of himself - shows his complete lack of acting skills.
Even the make artists dont get off lightly, Phil Daniel tash looked like it would fall off any minute.
