I find it quite effective against inf also. Another thing I find when defending is that attacking or charging first is always advantagous even when your on a hill because only ashigaru in that spear wall are effective for a kind of passive defence. I've stood passively with samurai and archers behind and even samurai lose alot more than spear wall ash. when passively defending.

the spear wall is extremly effective combined with cavalry for hammer & anvil strikes but if if you're yari ashigaru are under archer or matchlock fire during the spear wall they will be annihilated fast.

i like the yari spear wal against both infantery and cafalery. makes sure that al the units behind the spear wal won't get attacked witch can happen if the ashigaru unit is in normal mode

Does it not bug you that units run using the R-click and drag? I always hate it because it wastes energy and also if you're in a forest you get instantly exposed.

Chosokabe is the only faction i managed to complte in very hard mode. Swords and spears hold the front while stack 5 rows of archers. Get infantray leaer ASAP. See how the arrows demolish. every thing. Might wanna get a spear unit at the back of the formation in case they sneak a cav behin the archers.

To lionheartx10, is the campaign short or long? The reason why I ask that is that is as you get closer to "Realm Divide", make sure your "internal economy" (ie.Taxes and the likes) is in good shape. That means improve your farms and if there is any mines around upgrade that as well. Also so of the "Chi" (or civil) arts can also provide an a increase to tax rate which be handy.

@lionheartx10 the reason why I referred to the "internal economy" is that when the Realm Divide comes, pretty much everyone is going to hate you and will go to war at you. Also make sure you check your reputation stats bar when it nearing full, stop expanding and start building up your armies and also at the same (if possible) stock-pile on those Koku. You will need them. And you will need alot.

A Yari Ashi in spear wall can hold back a sword unit, and sometimes prevail in the longer fight as long as their formation isn't broken.
